Why do you drink milk Rhonda Clow is press reporter The pangs of boredom and loneliness are the usual problems of the very aged and the ill but at the Eden Nursing Home near Eden Mills they are being alleviated somewhat by an energetic and enthusiastic young occupational therapist who is interested in exercising the importance of activity in daily living Anna Maria Bell of Eden Mills is a graduate of the Dorset House School of Occupational Therapy in Oxford England After living in the community of Eden Mills for a few years with her husband and their four small children she felt that she wanted to put knowledge into practice Her training and hospital experience is presently putting her in good stead at the local nursing home and Anna Maria whose greatest delight is seeing the elation of accomplishment whenever her charges conquer a new assignment is very happy in her present vocation Much variety Occupational Therapy in the broader sense covers many areas of activity but Anna Maria affiliation with the Eden House patients is limited to such areas as bead work collages knitting bees and other unusual craft assemblages as well as play and activity games once a month Although it is a three hour schedule twice weekly for the young Eden Mills mother the residents of Eden House spend hours each visit compiling and completing their projects Newfound Interest It has given many of the gentlemen and ladies something to look forward to said one nursing assistant and the mounds of knitted squares and large artistic paper poppies tell a story of newfound energy and participation Several patients have discovered an unexplored field of creative activity at a period of their lives when they have time to get involved Wall coverings popslcle match box holders seeded pictures and wall decorations are only part of the amazing output of the Eden House residents Mrs Marion Robertson a resident from Windsor is very clever and her paper poppies would blend beautifully in any modern boutique Mrs Bessie Bowman an elderly school teacher adapts herself to adorable stuffed animals all stitched and in felt and wool Mrs entertains herself with the craft of squares and one very dear grandmother type referred to with affection as granny likes to just visit and see what everyone else is doing Get involved The new project is worth while one at the nursing home and it just a case of getting as many of its residents Involved as possible Sometimes it is a bother to get moving to participate but once I down in the craft room I really enjoy myself said one of the patients The greatest need at the local establishment is for more group participation type of entertainment The kind which will not only entertain said Mrs Bell but will also allow the patients to become involved Church groups and various organizations play a large role in special holiday activity programs but at other times during the year often the residents of institutions are forgotten or neglected because of busy involvements elsewhere Auxiliary members of such hospitals are continually hoping for regular group and would willingly cooperate with anyone Interested in producing such activities on a consistent or part time basis Guelph Rod and Gun Club Friday Night was dancing and the four piece band colled the whetted the musical appetites of over SO people who attended the annual spring dance
