Mediterranean tour Fabulous ruins of Ephesus school trip highlight The Acton Free Press Wednesday April Mrs Marion Patterson this week continues her trip diary accompanied high school students and other Acton adults the Mediterranean The cartoons are drawn by a John of Aurora Back in Beirut several of us went to the Gold Market in the Bazaar It was a thrill to see the way jewellery is purchased here There Is no bargaining but It just so happened that our wedding anniversary wa3 that week so my husband selected a very lovely gold pin depleting Beirut and the merchant treated us like royalty We were seated and served drinks then the selection was weighed multiplied the cost per ounce by the weight then priced and a charming little boy about 8 giftwrapped our purchase and we were really thrilled It was remarked that I acted like a child with her first doll under the Christmas tree but how could you help but be excited In an atmosphere like this First pinch Then after a delicious dinner back aboard ship we took our groups on a tour of Beirut that had impressed us so before dinner It seems that once the sun goes down the city Is transformed Several of our girls experienced their first pinch and even though we were rtyht next to them we failed to see this so after a short tour we got our lovely gals back to the ship safely and much more relaxed than they had been on the street I guess they had read quite a bit about Beirut but wc were very glad that we had them In good- sized groups anyway and not in small groups Sailed on That night we sailed on to Cyprus What a fabulous place that turned out to be I thought for a while our were going to mutiny when took the wrong turn after walking about three or four miles and came upon the most beautiful beach 1 have ever seen Some of the girls went completely berserk when they saw that lovely bluegreen water and ran in with all their clothes on for a swim The temperature must have been degrees anyway with no wind After several of us soaked our ran through the sand we made It back to the shops for you guessed It wonderful shopping and saw the United Nations troops stationed at the city wall but what a wonderful place Dreamlike The houses were very beautiful and like little haciendas and the vegetation was surprising There were exquisite hibiscus bushes everywhere cacti bamboo trees Royal palm trees and fruit trees lining the streets It was so clean and just dream like When we got back to the ship we realized that wed missed the famous castle Chateau dlf as wed taken the wrong turn but those who saw the old section of town and have their pictures to show us were most appreciative of our experience here and it just pointed out the contrasts In one town of the old and the new The people In the stores were so obliging and they are on the old English pound system there so it was a most Interesting place to Balance time transact business Highlight of trip Friday after lunch we reached what I consider to be the absolute highlight of the entire trip and I think most of our fellow travel lers agree We came into the port of Kusadasl In Turkey boarded flj busses and went up Into the magnificent hills of Turkey to the fabulous ruins of This was the largest city of Its time and had been rebuilt seven times on seven slightly different locations Our guide was a most attractive resident of Turkey Homework survey prepared by board At the request of the Halton Board of Education a homework survey has been conducted In the three education areas of County In each area the survey was conducted in one high school and several elementary schools What follows is a summary of these findings which will be of Interest of parents Kindergarten to grade 3 Throughout the county it is general practice to assign no homework On occasion some teachers assign remedial work for pupils who have been absent or who are weak in a particular subject Projects in which pupils are particularly interested may be pursued out of school with the amount of tune devoted to them determined by the pupils to a great extent Junior Division In the junior division students are expected to complete assignments not finished In the school tune assigned This seems true in Mathematics especially Many schools expect students to prepare weekly spelling lists at home It would appear that approximately ten to fifteen minutes per night is spent on spelling and mathematics Once again students requiring remedial help or those who do not use school time effectively are expected to complete work at home Intermediate Division 78 The Average Assignment in the schools surveyed seems to be about minutes a night Assignments are fairly well distributed among science mathematics history and geography Jane Watson day ends s curling Another successful high school curling season came to a close Wednesday April with the annual closing and banquet held at the curling club It was Jane Watson day with that young lady winning first prize In the bonspiel as well as the Tom Watson trophy for the season play and the Jack Ridley trophy for most valuable player In the club winning rink for the season consisted of Jane David Cunningham and Sharon Ellerby rink was made up of strangely enough the same three plus Scott Somerville This was merely coincidence iince the members of the teams for the day were drawn from a hat Second prize Second prize in the went to Glen rink with George McPhails a close third All players received prizes Coach Nan Hurst and her By Mary Ann Frailer After several welts of indoor training and studying the Driver Education class has finally taken the first big step Students who have obtained their beginners permit may be seen cautiously driving down the streets of Acton in Mr La r sen driving instruction car As in the past Mr Clarence has taught the theory part of the course Grade our Last Wednesday the grade twelve geography class toured Douglas Aircraft The bus left the school shortly after nine to return after a completed tour at The guides on the tours were very helpful in explaining the way in which airplane wings and are made The personnel was wellinformed and could answer the students questions well Mr Black the staff organizer of this field trip Candy drive The student council candy campaign has been successfully completed except for a few late orders that have yet to be tilled Some of the more ambitious students met at the school last Tuesday night and formed a car rally to help promote chocolate bar sales It was disappointing that the order of bridge mixture did not arrive Our apologies to anyone who had wished to purchase some of this offer Reports soon It Is easy to see that soon term reports will be sent home to the parents All of a sudden the students are being swamped with a deluge of tests and papers On the brighter side school closes on June 10 assistant Jackie Blow kept scores during the afternoons two eight- end Present awards Bruce Andrews Ed department head from the high school presented the M V P award and Rene Watson who convened the dinner presented her husband large trophy and individual trophies Dieconvener served the dinner with assistance from Val Drink- waiter Eileen New and Jean McPhail Special dinner guests with Bruce Andrews were Joe Hurst who said grace and Blow Thanks donors Before the presentations Loach Nan Hurst thanked the many donors who helped make the closing bonspiel the success It was Prizes were donated by Bob Armstrong Paul Nielsen Mcb Blow Ben Rachun Tom Manes of I G A and Ted Tyler Sr Tom Watson donated the turkey for the main course and curlers mothers sent salads etc The Curling Club Ladles supplied pop and potato chips The student curlers presented gifts to the coach and her assistant in appreciation for a successful season and an enjoyable day Projects In the reports received several references are made to projects especially in science or social studies Usually these assignments arc made suf ficiently In advance to prevent excessive strain on any one night unless of course the pupil has not organized sufficiently Test Preparation Some time is spent in preparation for tests In addition to the time mentioned above Pupils are usually Informed several days in advance Senior Division 913 following are estimates the homework demands on students taking standard programs Grade hours grade 10 hours grade hours grade hours grade 13 hours Homework requirements are less in four year courses In each secondary school survey it was indicated that some students have difficulty balancing their homework time Little work is done on some nights and as a result an Inordinate amount of time is required This seems especially true as assignments change from routine homework exercises to long term essays or research projects Some students have not yet developed a critical path approach to meeting deadlines As a result the impression is sometimes given that students are overburdened with homework Observations 1 Very little In the way of routine nightly homework is expected Routine in Grades 7a are short and require little time There is a shift away from regular nightly assignments towards longer assignments or projects beginning on a very limited scale in the junior division In general time expended on these projects does not seem excessive Care will have to be maintained by principals and teachers to sec that these projects have clearly defined aims that seek to develop skills and concepts and are not simply a gathering of content Some pupils Grades and their parents would like more regular nightly assignments The credit system allows more work time In schools particularly for senior secondary school students and a graduate In Archaeology educated at the American College In Istanbul Made It live She really made this place live for all of us Her love for it was so very evident and the excitement she felt was transmitted to each and every one of us who were with her We could see the Port City visible from the sea which was now brush and the huge fire which was lit to signify to the sailors coming into port that all was well and It was to come Into the city If ships came by and there was no fire they then knew it was not safe or that there was disease and they should not come ashore We sow the seven storey apartment homes and were shown the early people here had airconditioning in their own time so re not so clever or original otter all Old legends It is not certain who had first founded and when but the oldest information is that it began in C and Its existence is mentioned near the Temple of Artemis The oldest legends suppose the Amazons founded and It was inhabited by Carinns and but it had to change sites under geologic and political pressures St John lived here and they say they have proof that Mary Jesus mother came here to live after the Crucifixion until her death Wcwere taken to her home and only the upper port of it has been rebuilt Wonderful condition Everything in the magnificent city that was once the capital of Anatolian towns in Roman times is in wonderful condition as it is being uncovered by geologists A most exciting day hen when our tour was over we shopped on the main street and most of the tourists ourselves included purchased beautiful leather goods there for about the price we would pay for them in Canada Learn to bargain were lovely little gift shops selling fine jewellery side by side with the leather shops really great delight in the leather shopping was the tourists all learned to bargain for their coats and bags If you didnt want to pay that much for a specific item you expressed disinterest walked away then were quoted a slightly lower price Then one of your cohorts came along and ran the item down a bit and the people in the stores would come down a bit more Then usually after this happened you would name the price thut you wanted to pay and the storekeeper would strike a bargain with you What fun that proved to be Lovely souvenirs In the Jewellery stores there was no bargaining at least not for us but we were atle to get some lovely onyx and alabaster souvenirs for our friends The whole day was one that will live a long time in our memories We felt it was better than Christmas we mean that in the religious sense not the gift exchanging one The places in the mountains looked so sacred and there was no commercialism anywhere We saw the grave of St John and the Students lucky to tour Douglas by Anne A Fiedler On April the grade 12 geography class left Acton High at destination Douglas Aircraft Industry We arrived at and were greeted by our two guides We were taken on a 2hour guided tour of the whole plant Our guides were very stimulating they seemed to make the whole plant come to life with their personalities They were very informative and answered all of our many questions Safety glasses Before we began our tour of the factory every student had to put on safety glasses The Base Itself is an enormous production line for the DC 9 and DC 10 aircrafts wings and tails The plant is highly mechanized although some delicate parts have to be made by hand Ac curacy not speed is the main concern of the employers and employees The tour left us all with a knowledge of how they assemble aircraft parts Lucky to tour As we were told by the guides we were extremely lucky to have been allowed to tour Douglas Aircraft because only one out of every five applications for school student groups is accepted Most of the students did returning to their former religion so formed his own city one time In history rhe Epistle to the Ephesians tells the story well In the Bible rhe Roman theatre was at the top of the hill and could be seen from the sea as well The Temple of Diana the Goddess of Fertility was here and the Baths were evident Fig vines and vineyards were abundant The students soon learned the difference architecture regarding pillars in as the examples of Doric Composite Ionic and Corinthian were superlative See stork We saw a huge stork on a Minaret In town and thought it very beautiful but didnt get too close to it Amazing how superstitious you get Saturday we arrived at Crete in the port of Kondla with narrow streets and ancient modern architecture It is to most old port towns in that it is built on a hill and the stores are very pleasing We went by bus a short distance out to and were taken back to the days of the Minotaur where a sacrifice of seven boys and seven in perfect physical condition was made and young boys and girls part of the great Harem of Trojan wars The ancient palace was seven stones and water was brought up to the village on flat water carriers by horseback in ancient times The Trojan war3 had taken place near here For interesting vegetation the sultana raisins that are sold for export all the world are grown here on very short stocky grjpevines The heavy brown burntorange evident in art as well as architecture was to my very ugly after the day before viewing the graceful of Roman Architecture had a delicious lunch back on the ship and were presented with lovely gift from our young table guests to celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary kids by this time had had enough of ruins and shopping for tlie time being so we all enjoyed an afternoon sunning ourselves and swimming on deck It was like Beach on a Sunday afternoon for a while but the affection we all felt for one another by this time made this quite enjoyable When you looked up from your deck space to the passing countryside you could see the snow glistening on the tops of the highest mountain peaks and it hard to believe as we were all getting suntanned on the deck Continued next week ROtlERTR HAMILTON OPTOMETRIST Mountain Road Georgetown have lunches and so on the way home we made a short stop at McDonalds in Brampton We were back at Acton high at approximately 1 Thank you Mr
