The Acton Free Wednesday April 1971 Joyous messa Crowds fill churches for Easter services With Easter lilies triumphant music and appropriate sermons all Actons churches had large congregations celebrating Christs resurrection Some of the churches also had special services on other days of Holy Week Joint services Attendance was very good at all interdenominational Holy Week services last week All three services were held in the United church with guest preacher the Rev William Both- well a high school teacher who is the former Anglican dean of the Cathedral of Montreal Each evening various groups attended together some of them groups of young people from participating churches Mr Bothwell continued his theme The Cross at the Centre each of the three evenings finding his congregations intent and very deeply impressed Share music Anglicans supplied the music the first Sunday the Presbyterians and Baptists Wednesday and United church choir and organist Thursday Participating clergymen were the Rev A H McKenzie the Rev Harry Dawson the Rev Gordon Turner the Rev Walter the Rev Pete the Rev S Thoman and the Rev Prank Byrne Easter breakfast At Knox Presbyterian church on Easter Sunday about Sunday School scholars and teachers sat down to breakfast in the church hall followed by a special program upstairs The Daughters of Knox prepared ham and scrambled eggs with Hot Cross buns for the group Gerald Reraiie the Sunday School superintendent had a program for them including slides on the Easter story and singing Two choirs There was a large congregation for the regular morning service conducted by the Rey A Mrs Mann had prepared the Junior choir to Join the seniors for Easter The Junior choir sang themselves and then Joined the senior choir for an anthem The senior choir also had an Easter anthem to make the singing a special pleasure Ted Hansen led the choirs Priest Father Farrell S J assisted Father Morgan with Holy Week ceremonies at St Josephs Roman Catholic church including Mass on Holy Thursday evening ceremonies an Good Friday afternoon and Holy Saturday ceremonies Saturday evening The church was filled for both masses Easter Sunday morning Altars were beautifully decorated Father Is the former rector of Ignatius College Guelph Triumphant Christ The triumphant Christ was the theme of Easter services enjoyed in Evangel Tabernacle Easter Sunday by a good crowd enthusiastically singing the hymns true to the seasonal theme Up from the Grave He Arose and The Hallelujah Chorus Other music included That Day and Gabriels Jesus Rose of Sharon Participating in the Good Friday service the Christ Ambassadors presented the themes of Easter uniquely through the Art Gallery posters with pictures depicting the truth of the crucifixion resurrection and ascension The Rev S spoke on Triumphant Believer and in the evening Easter Trivialities plans At the Baptist church the Hi- Fellowship group convened an Easter breakfast at 815 Sunday morning which drew a good attendance of members and parents of Sunday School children The boys and girls planned and prepared the break fast which was followed by a wellattended service at a were timely and the Rev Frank Byrne had an Easter Mrs Joan Harrison directed the choir in the anthem He is Risen with Charles Land- sborough at the organ Several services At the Church of St the Martyr three services were held on Easter morning Holy Eucharist at a and i and Sung Eucharist at 1030 a m The front of the church was banked with Easter lilies and the flowers on the altar were mums carnations and snapdragons all white The choir sang an Easter anthem The Resurrection with Mrs Frank Oakes directing Solemn reflection St Albans had a service of Holy Eucharist in Maundy Thursday and a service of Solemn Reflection The Rev H Dawson had timely messages He was also accepting congratulations on the birth of his second child another daughter for the rector and his wife Gail Trumpet solo At BethEl Christian Reformed church regular services were held at am and 2 pm conducted by the Rev Peter Brouwer John Duenk played a trumpet solo with the organist Mrs Vcnema Services were both in English the Dutch language is now only used for special services at BethEl Take notes Acton United church was almost completely filled Sunday morning for the Easter services Over young people of the ministers communicants class were introduced and took notes during the Rev Gordon Turners timely sermon The choir sang two anthems under the direction of George Elliott Large bouquets hydrangeas and Easter lilies brightened the chancel Would form CMHA branch Hopefully a local branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association will be formed for North Halton following a meeting called for Thursday evening April The meetings organizers who can list benefits from such an association in other centres hope to see a good crowd at United church north of Hornby that evening They have a couple Brownlee nee Storey after a short illness passed away in her year Mrs Brownlee sixth in a family of eleven was a member of one of the pioneer families of She spent her girl hood years there came to Acton as a bride returning to where her children were born and then to Acton for the period of to The family then moved to Toronto where she has lived with her daughter Mrs George Frances McAllister
