Adventurer to Ottawa learns about Canada Each year the Acton Rotary dab sponsor a high school student on a trip to Ottawa year be staff of Acton High School selected Barb to represent the school Barb report of the four days she spent En Ottawa mi IN CITIZENSHIP By Barb For years students from all provinces and territories have taken part In the adventure in citizenship its purpose to enable high school students from across Canada to learn more about how this vast country Is governed The Ottawa Rotary Club is providing this project with the assistance of other Rotary Clubs across Canada I am very pleased to say that I have been chosen as this year adventurer to visit our national capital The Acton Rotary Club kindly provided me with the necessary information and a plane ticket I must admit that I was nervous when I first boarded the plane but now I can say that I enjoyed every minute of my first flight I left the International Airport arrived on May and arrived in Ottawa about an hour later There I was met by Mr who arranged the billeting of the adventurers He introduced me to Reverend Adamson and his family with whom I had the pleasure of spending my short tune in Ottawa My roommate was a girl from Port British Columbia On Monday morning approximately senior high school students assembled In the Theatre of National Arts Centre We were welcomed by the chairman of the Adventure in Citizenship J G the president of the Ottawa Rotary Club E B Baker the director general of the National Arts Centre G Hamilton Southern and his worship Kenneth H C Mayor of the city of Ottawa Most luxurious Following the speeches the adventurers were entertained by the National Arts Centre Orchestra in the Opera House Our luncheon was held in the ballroom of the Chateau with the Rotary Club members of Ottawa It was the most luxurious dining urea I have ever been in We were addressed by the Honourable Donald C Minister of Transport who gave an interesting speech In the including fishing camping hunting hiking trails excellent views waterfalls and fissure caves Devils Glen Provincial Park Wilt be expanded by the acquisition of an additional acres A nature reserve has been established in the Mad River valley As the Niagara Escarpment Study recommended the establishment of a major provincial park at the Credit Forks a tract including the Forks of the Credit has been acquired for this purpose This area has some of the most spectacular scenery in Southern Ontario and affords yearround recreational opportunities Thirty have also been acquired as an addition to the adventurers assembled In Southam Hnll at the Carleton University We were welcomed by the Right Honourable Lester Pearson Chancellor and Professor of International Affairs of University It was a pleasure listening to his quite humorous speech Continuing our ad venture we held group discussions with several professors of the University It was interesting partially because our leader was a singing guitar playing professor Musical ride We held our luncheon in the Main Hall of the University Centre where we were received by Louis Progressive Conservative member of Parliament In buses we drove to to the M P training Division Among other the Musical Ride was performed for us It is hard to describe it in words but to see it is a memorable experience We also toured the National Museum of Science mid Technology It displayed something for everybody taste from antique cars to watching yourself on a television screen More tours Wednesday program contained more roup discussions and a guided tour through the university An outstanding feature arc the tunnels that connect almost every building of the campus Following this we had a tour of the National Capital Region Among other points of interest we saw Mr Trudeau residence from the outside Princes of Wales alls Canal and Hall The opportunity to visit Governor General Mich en Residence was experience in itself The tour was followed by a fresco luncheon on the lawns of the Government House As guests of the National Capital Commission we had a buffet supper in the Chateau where the Honourable Robert Minister of Urban Development spoke to us I had the pie of si I tin with Mud Whiting who represents Halton County in Federal Government An informal dance was held that at tht Canterbury School The Ado Fr Press Wednesday May 19 On Thursday May Mr Black gave out the invitations Were we ever surprised A dinner for us The staff of Robert hod invited the students from the high school who had helped the teachers during the term in the student assistance program Like royally The day arrived Wednesday May 12 and some how or other we all made it down to the public school in time As we drifted in groups of three and four we were guided into the staff room by Mrs Treated like royalty we had the room and comfortable chairs to ourselves and discussed our bright children whom we only had to cope with for a half doy in six while the teachers had them everyday Here I would like to express a sincere ink to the teachers for us the opportunity to work with children and to learn what a te lehing career is all about A lot of patience understanding and hard work Fnrich selves We the students were happy to help the teachers thus really enriching ourselves Remembering multiplication tables improving our painting ind spelling surprises with an instead of a I think we also acquired a sense of achievement in what we were dome At this time I would like to thank everyone involved for making this program such a success for the students At 11 I remember because I was hungry we were shown into the gymnasium which had been transformed Into a dining hall with tables neatly set and comfortably arranged in the room Bouquets on the tables and delicious food helped create a friendly atmosphere Brought specialties From what I gather each teacher brought his or her speciality Most dishes were casserole ranging from spaghetti to Jelly salads and all were delicious It was served buffet style and everyone had a taste of almost every dish The students were DELICIOUS DESSERTS brought Gilmore Nancy Frost Susan Kldd and superintendent of instruction for Mary Fuchs Appreciation luncheon was held county back for more with four of the in the school Wednesday teachers student assistants Anne Photo funds spoke on the Adventure In Citizenship following the speeches came the goodbyes and even some tears In the four days students became friends who are now scattered over an area that stretches from sea to sea I have learned more about Canada during my short stay in Ottawa than in six years I have lived in this country I would like to express my thanks to the Acton High School Waff and Mr Hansen and some or other Must continue Mr us whit a great Idea the student assistance program had been and how he wanted it to continue and catch on to other schools in the county I think it was obvious to everyone involved that the has worked superbly and th it it must The teacher assistants sincerely thank Mr Black for makinc this possible His unmatched enthusiasm encouraged the students to become questions of them Remember that tonight at the high school tyrnntLSium Open house Another date to circle on your calendar is Tuesday June 1 This is the night of our open house where the public will be invited to roam the halls and view the nous displays Because of lack of tune voting for the new student council will not take place this Friday Instead an assembly will be held then in order for the candidates to present their platform As of Monday May the are treasurer Rob president I Marshall and Wendy Hannah is anticipating the time when the halls will be filled with posters and rarely a bare
