Thomson By Wendy Thomson I guess its time I wrapped up my Trail Ride stories by answering the one question I hear most when people get talking about these rides Its What kind of people go on those rides and it never falls to bring a laugh Then I start in on a few more tales My favorite person to tell about is Marie Lee an goodness English Nanny from Toronto She read one my stories about Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies and notwithstanding the fact that shed never ridden before or that she was over decided that that was the one thing shed like to do Mr and Mrs Bernard of Acton would like to announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Susan Darlene to Mr Frederick John son of Mr and Mrs Sam Gisby of Limehouse The marriage will take place on Saturday September at oclock In Knox Presbyterian church Georgetown Ontario Photo by Jim Jennings Many nurses no teachers A record number of Acton girls will be beginning nurses training next week while not a single high school Kitchener I found her a very quiet restful sort of person not sure what was going on but game for it all It was on the last night In camp that she surprised us no end I thought that because she was so quiet shed rather not join in on our Skit night But instead of taking the easy way out and being a spectator she firmly announced that she did indeed have something in mind Fair lady When Maries turn came In the big tent that night she appeared with a packhorse canvas wrapped around as an apron with her hat decorated with flowers made of toilet paper and a horses nose basket for a flowerbasket Then after asking the riders if theyd buy Pretty flowers for the lydy sir Marie sat on a log and sang in a clear true Cockney voice two of Elizas songs from My Fair Lady She was tremendous Thinking of Maries improvisa tions for props 1 was Just sitting laughing remembering a Toronto man from last year Bob was a real Scotsman and his offering for the evening was the sword dance Of course he didnt have his kilt with him but he more than made do much to everybodys delight by fashioning one kilt out of two plaid shirts one front and one back And to add the proper touch he even wore a a buckled knapsack His wife joined in wearing polo pyjamas Back to this year Two more rather unforgettable characters were both guides that I hadnt met last year much to my regret for I keep thinking that weve missed out on a whole year of knowing them Del Brassard out of western Calgary looked like hed just stepped out of a western movie only more so His face was sun and wind burnt with permanent smile crinkles around his eyes His constant cheerfulness was a boost in itself first thing in the morning when you were trying to decide whether yoti could make it up on your horse or not And all of us sat and watched Del on his horse scouting through the trees and thought Some day Im going to nde like that None of us could picture him as doing anything but ruling the range but for the rest of the year Del worked in the CP yards in Calgary Someone that Gord and I arc looking forward to seeing this fall is Cloudy guide extraordinaire No description of mine could do him justice Look twice When I first saw him I wondered where the outfitters had drug him up from His jeans were tattered around the bottom and came halfway up his boots his hat was not only battered but motheaten and he had a droopy ponchocoat on Cloudy himself was equally droopy eyes moustache and hair Wed be talking and Id get to feeling that something was a little odd then realize t hut he was sitting looking at me crosseyed not brazenly so but just enough to make a person look twice Cloudy was more than a clown because all his jokes were intel ligent and his bumbling was done with a real flair Even his songs were a little unusual One that is more printable than some of the rest went The lonesomest cowboy I ever have known Ate garlic for breakfast and rode all alone He hadnt a sweetheart he hadnt a dear And even his horse made him mount from the rear He unwinds One of the summers greatest surprises came in learning that Cloudy is an English teacher from Barne only two courses away from getting his Masters degree This type of summer is how he unwinds When you get right down to it theres no particular kind of person on the rides Some can ride a horse some cant theres some quiet some talkative fat and thin young and old doctors geologists nurses all kinds of technicians truck drivers pilots students some are looking for peace and quiet some looking for adventure and oddly enough both find it When I asked Mane Perry how she liked the holiday she said Well Im not planning on doing it again I tried it once and it wasnt my thing Ill just have to go on looking for that But I wouldnt have missed it for the world Never freeze corn in husk Never freeze corn in the husk This Is the lazy mans way and it doesnt pay off If you want com on the cob to taste garden fresh you must prepare it properly Otherwise the result maybe disappointing and you will have wasted not only your tune but freezer space and the corn as well Why take the husks off For several very good reasons say food specialist at the Ontario Food Council Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food Fust it is not a very practice to freeze com in husks that may harbor insects second the husks take up valuable freezer space and third and most important com on the cob must be blanched Blanched is necessary because all vegetables contain enzymes These natural substances if not controlled by blanching cause undesirable changes in flavor color and texture Unblanched com takes on a cobby taste and becomes tough and pale in color County Separate Schools ADVANCE REGISTRATIONS will take place at all schools on FRIDAY SEPT 3rd-
