the good of playing an 11 trick club contract for point when you can play a safer nine trick no trump contract and make an for points Would you believe that no pair the following at clubs which is the ideal contract SOUTH KJTSJ EAST SOUTH WEST PASS PASS PASS PASS ALL PASS NT Pass Opening lead five of 18 points No one can find fault in Norths opening one no trump Walt forget to add one point for all four aces This had is really worth points first bid of two dubs is Stayman asking North to bid a tour card major If he has one Norths bid of two diamonds denies a four card major South now shows that he really has dubs by bidding three clubs Norths bid of three hearts may seem a bit confusing North has denied having a four card major earlier He can now show three card suit by bidding Notice that if he had three spades Instead It would be very useful to South if North bids them at the point South is unwilling to settle for three no trump and uses Black wood to check on aces Five dubs show no aces on all four aces It is obvious from his opening bid that he holds all four aces Straight forward The play is very straight forward If dubs break twoone declarer can snuff two spades in dummy There is no reason to take any finesses yet The heart ace wins the first trick and a club is lead to the king When West shows out declarer makes a change in plans He might as well try the spade finesse for an A spade is led to the ace and a small spade is led back Declarer plays the jack but unfortunately West wins with the queen West makes an excellent return of the spade eight but dedarer is not foaled He must ruff with dummys ace of trump to keep East from ruffing Now a dub is led and the marked finesse is taken Trumps are drawn and declarer claims the balance One pair did get to slam but it was in spades This was doomed when West showed up with four spades to queenten All other pairs settled for a three no trump contract making no more than ten tricks Winners THURSDAY TOPPERS Dec won a reprieve at Mondays meeting of the township council Councillors promised to engage a private trucker and grant him a subsidy of approximately per month on a three month trial basis to cart SPINS waste material away for resale at depots SPIN chairman Mrs June Andrews of Campbellvllle led a delegation of about SPIN members to Mondays meeting to urge council not to cut off promised assistance to the group Council had earlier promised to help SPIN truck away its waste collections but at the Dec 15 meeting councillors decided it would cost the township too much to truck the stuff away Private trucker Both councillors and SPIN members emphasized that township trucks should not be used and a private trucker should be engaged The township hod used roads department vehicles for the December collections A member of SPIN told council the group wanted council to take on the management responsibility So if a private trucker after few months decides he can no longer collect the waste he will have someone lo pass the problem on to Council could then hire another man Pay overtime One of the members of the SPIN deputation was puzzled about the reported cost of using township trucks to pick up the waste at SPINS three depots It was explained that picking up the garbage on the collection day- Saturday required the payment of overtime Reeve Mrs Anne Mac Arthur also pointed out that winter road conditions might make the availability of township trucks impossible Deputy Reeve Don McMillan also explained to the SPIN deputation that although a fac tory in had paid for a shipment of waste paper SPIN had collected the private trucker who delivered it was forced to bring back of the paper because was not properly bided Reeve Mac Arthur appeared to rescue the project when after listening the views of SPIN and council members mentioned she had found a private trucker who would collect the garbage at SPINS depots and store It In his barn until he was able to truck It away She remarked it would cost he man about a month to dispose of the waste Im sure If SPIN were to properly package and label the waste at least could be recovered The reeve asked members of council if they were prepared to subsidize the remaining 25 a month to help the private trucker meet his expenses Plow his lane Council members seemed to feel a month subsidy was no overly expensive Council also decided it would pay the cost of the lancway between the truckers home and his barn in the event a snowstorm made disposal of the waste difficult for the man Its only the portion of the road between this mans home and barn A heavy snowfall might hamper him when he decides to truck the garbage away Hes not asking to have his entire lancway plowed explained Reeve Council agreed to subsidize the man on a three month basis You never know maybe this man will be able to make some money on the operation quipped Councillor Arthur Gibson This past week sow only the Boxing Day and the New In the transput
