Sculptures dance games skating contests highlight school carnival Tho Free Press Wednesday March 1 1972 By Corf Maxwell Last Wednesdays pie eating contest opened Acton High winter carnival for this year The ten contestants Included Bryan Robinson John McMullen Frank Houston Alan Union Hank Wlsseni Glen McKeittle Mr J Goring Steve Mellor John and Frank These competitors had a time limit 20 minutes to devour one pie The pie which had no crust consisted canned filling In a pie plate covered with whipped cream The only stipulation was that they could not use their hands and they had to lick the plate clean The opponents began at 30 and a short five minutes ter Glen McKeniie hod foiled his rivals with a shiny platter Very close behind Glen was Frank who hod a tummy full of pie and a clean plate to show for his efforts After a brief break to clean the gym floor and to set up barrels the tricycle races started These races consisted of two heats first the boys then the girls The boys who competed John Ashley Brad Martin Charlie Thlbodeau Jim Frlxtell and Scott SomervUle had to circle the gym for ten laps Even with all of Scott SomervUle practising John Ashley put a tough tight which made the race close but Scott won Second heat In the second heat Denlse Susan and Cathy were battling for first place After only one lap Susan McPhail tricycle broke down and she was given another Due to this delay Susan lost contention and the fight was Denlse It was almost a tie for on the last half of the last lap the two tricycles became tangled Before reaching the finish line Cathy made a quick breakaway to win the race About 100 people attended the skating party on the ice behind the school The circular rink was constructed by Mr Andrews and the phys and the area was scored 1 goal each for the students but unfortunately they could not beat Mr Rowley hat trick and Dave Lee goal for the teachers After three periods the game finished with a score of for the teachers Immediately following the broombail game was a war between the four Intramural house league teams Unfortunately It got off to a bad start with the rope breaking resulting In a delay the competition until a new rope was supplied The first tugof war between the Juicy and the Jungle Bunnies resulted In the defeat of Juicy Next was Underground and and the Squad In which Underground won The two winners competed for the final war and after a heaving struggle the Jungle Bunnies emerged victorious First prize In the snow sculpturing contest goes to the large dragon behind the school The judges had a very hard time making a decision and a close second goes to the bear also standing behind the school group Buster Crab played at Friday evening coffee house dance which brought winter carnival students from the high school entered a German contest This contest by The Ontario Modern Language Teachers Association is organized annually and consists of two categories one for regular German students and a special section for students with a German background This week the results came in and out of participants In the regular category Carolyn MacKeniie placed second and Robert Ellerby placed seventh Out of 24 participants in the special category Angela Pries placed third and Gertrude Maron tied for fifteenth final contest will be held at McMaster University in May Congratulations to these four students and good luck to them In the finals at Mac Mas I Last Friday and Saturday four teachers from the high school Mr J May Mr H Swallow Mr J Goring and Mrs Huenlken attended a conference at the University of Western Ontario in London Hi is conference supplied these teachers with updated views and recent Inter of specific historical topics by different historians rhese teachers heard Mr educator geographer and cochairman of The Canadian Studies Research Foundation speak about how history relates to the Intel lectuallsm of the day and about his work In The Canadian
