seems to be timely so I attempted to condense the article which Is In fact an interview with Ed Johnson of California the only man at this date to win the Cup twice and who broke records doing It Tough Arab Ed maintains that conditioning yourself is every bit as Important as conditioning the horse and learning to ride the horse well giving It the maximum help Is the whole secret On this particular ride riders are allowed to advance while walking so being in good enough shape to walk your horse up and down hills is a distinct advantage He also states that the practice of riding the horse long and hard and then resting It for ID minutes and that steady great is much better Ed rests horse by leading him at a walk constantly advancing The horse Ed used for all his endurance riding including the winning cup rides was a tall Arab stallion who was raised end worked in mountains so was well used to obstacles brush and lots of to miles a day Fast work mostly at a trot Is what helped the stallion to become really tough Horsemanship counts Running and fast walking plus generally keeping muscles in peak condition helps Ed to ride the best way he can and to walk the mites he needs to on each ride Ed feels that It doesnt matter if you are large or over weight but it is the way you ride that is most importantgood horsemanship is the be all and end all At one point Ed reluctantly changed from a Western saddle to an English one and was delighted with the results his weight was up front where it should be the horse responded muth better and was less tired In summarising the article advised lots of riding for the horse and as much running or walking exercise for the rider as possible in order to condition themselves Pacing can only be learned by actually competing In endurance events and gaining the necessary experience all you neophyte endurance riders take heed Ride ride and ride some more and both you and your horse will have SOME muscles at least BRINGING IN
