another blonde schoolgirl daughter Just as expert on the banjo Or the younger schoolgirl In the notso blonde pig tails expert on the banjo or the little one still too young for school also In pigtails who kept the rythym on a small plastic drum Maybe it was the tiny tot with tight very blonde curb all over her head Too young to be In the band but who completely won the heart of everyone as she wandered around the hall All were show stealers in their starlet pleated skirts and long sleeved white blouses their pleasing personalities and musical abilities They played many pieces and were well those who had taken part in it Passport trip Die club are looking forward to a Passport to trip to visit some of the interesting places in our own County Also the annual zone Rally will be coming up soon which always means another trip and pleasant outing By Wendy Thomson And now on to the geese At onetime we were getting overrun with them They tamped on the doorstep at night and took over the neigh tour vegetable garden by day but generally afforded us much entertainment Lost winter the number steadily dwindled as dogs and raccoons took their toll until we had only three left two female geese and a gander One goose laid a good batch of eggs in a nest under the big feed tank then those too disappeared Within the month she was left sitting on one big round stone She sat and sat and sat Finally Gord took pity on her and bought six little ducklings at an auction They were only a day or so old so we kept them up at the house for a little while These were theones that Suehound wanted toadopt Stone hatched 1 think the general Idea when Introducing chicks to be adopted Is to do it at night when the foster parents tan t see the human element and they think the eggs have finally hatched or in this case that the stone a eoose was silting on hatched six ducklings The only trouble is that when you re down there with no YOU tan t set what you re doing either Finally I had to turn the flashlight on and their with all the squalling and get close enough to shove the babies right In the nest He could only set them as close as he dared Mamu goose was overjoyed to set her offspring wanted to get them right away from That Man as soon as possible I wish I could describe the scene that followed complete with noises the put her bill down between her body and the nest shoving it hard to make a little tunnel that the dueklings could run down to safety all the while making a murmuring coaxing goose noise a very motherly sound Funny looking bird Unfortunately the little ones had never seen a nest or a bird like that and didn know quilt- what to make of it After listening to all these odd sounds and watching that big bird rising and down ishe was trying to vt them room to run under they turned and ran for By then they figured he was Daddy and to hctk with that funny looking bird The only thing we could do was leave them there and hope the t freeze When we went back in the morning everything seemed to have been settled in the night she was proudly leading them around before taking them to the pond which they was their element For Mamagoose the troubles were just starting These ducklings just t behae like geese They march In a nice little line like geese do but took off all over the place Mama would get three of them back in order onlj to find that the cithers had disappeared in the weeds And when she got them the water they wouldn come out again She call and call but theyd stay in and have a marvellous time and up ending and eating little green frogs instead of going to see the clumps of Mama was trying to point out tons Finally as the ducklings got older and more selfsufficient they reached a compromise with Mama The ducks stayed In the pond the geese grazed in the pasture but they communicated regularly If we were down by the barn every now and then we d hear a loud QUACK quack quack from the pond followed by a couple of big long blasts of HONK HONK from the pasture This would go on for a few minutes They t summoning one another they were just keeping track Then one by one the ducks begun to disappear and I was quilt sorry to find that I was indirectly the cause of it Id been fetdinf die horses a few cobs of com on top of the hill every day and the ducks not being able to peek corn off the cob would tear up the hill to enjoy the that the horses dropped And while were rummaging in the grass after I kit a hawk was swooping down and killed them right on top of the So now we have three geese and two ducks all hand fed el to the bushes and pond 1 don t know what Gord has for Ihcm and I m not sure whether I WANT to know Right now I m Just going to spoil them roltcn and at their funny brighteyed look as they come zooming through the water to see if have any corn Bet Leitch head The first meeting of the north H home making club took place at the Hall on Saturday Mrs Kirk wood and Doris Burt are the lenders for this
