Speaker series noon hour programs The Acton Free Press Wednesday This year the Guidance department under the headship of Brian Skerrett Is continuing a lunchhour speaker series Is set up as a number of sessions with experts In various lelds Last week two guests appeared George Harding assistant director of Student Affairs at the University of Guelph and Dr C Hod Medical Practitioner and hypnotist Grade and students Rick Hammond and Carol report on the speakers HUMAN RELATIONS By Rick Hammond George Harding was the first In what I hope will be a long series of speakers Mr Harding assis tant director or Student Affairs at the University of Guelph and Is a specialists human relations His work Is based on developments science programming and applied behavioural sciences isodotogy He works along the same lines as our guidance office by helping people to deal with their lives Mr Harding Is a man of wide Interests when it comes to the subject of helping people I feel that ho has a natural talent in this Held because he Is a very easy person to talk with and listen to With the emotional problems that students are encountering in school more people like Mr Harding arc needed I Just hope I have someone like him to turn to in my future university years All my thanks go to Mr Hording for giving up his time in order to come to Acton High School HYPNOSIS Guest Speaker Dr Hoddenott First of ail he gave a small lecture on hypnosis Then he explained how he got Interested In It He refused to give a demon because he does not believe It should be exhibited Besides that It Is against the law He has a practice In Georgetown and about three or four months later he began his hypnosis Itlsusedforobeslty to help quit smoking depression end sexual problems It Is also used In dentistry and in operations so they don t have to use anesthetics It is also used on athletes to encourage them because when you are under hypnosis your concentration is Intensified you see better hear better and you are also more powerful He also explained how people can hypnotize themselves with out even knowing it It is believed that this Is what did at the assassination of Robert Kennedy Heather said It trip was with the Outers supervised by Mr Rowley and Last game The junior volley ball action last week the last game of the season was played at T A They lost They have played a total of games and won seven This is a 20 per cent win for us The girls basketball team have played three games and lost three unfortunately The reason for this is that a small school the number of players arc limited The approved a plan Thurs day that would establish a set of core programs for elementary students Educators felt a need to move towards a basis on which all the schools were working Some felt that the trend toward diversification and individualism had gone too far While they felt they would not want to return to a rigid system used early in the 1960s they agreed a program somewhere in between would be best Core program The new program Is called core curricula and Is one of recotn mendutions in the board priority and expenditures report The program is expected to cost WO WO the first year and a total of Thursday was the second of a scries of meetings being held by the board to deal with the priorities and expenditures report Although the recommendation dealt only with elementary schools the board received a brief from Chapter of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation supporting a move to a core program in the secondary school as well Childhood development course pilot project The role of the parent is one of the most important roles any individual person ever gets to play and yet there is no training for parenthood Rev Bowra told the County Board of Education during a discussion Thursday on the Childhood Education program council report Council chairman said early childhood development was a subject where there Is so little known and so very much to learn He indicated very little is covered at teachers college The report presented to the board recommends the board have a well qualified person develop a program in early childhood development and implement the course on the basis of a pilot project in a high school in the county The report also considers the possibility of working in collaboration with the Department of Health and Welfare and a local municipality in order to locate and staff a day care centre right on a school site The report was accepted and will be considered by the executive council and come before the board at a later date in and consisted of skits that were devised by the Canadian Mime Theatre and directed by Adrian Pecknold The finul skit was called the Silent Screen which related buck to the old silent movies Ask atmosphere casual Canoeingispartof the schools recreation program Gibbons By Bob Beenxum On Thursday October 19 a group of grade and 13 students went to Sheridan College campus The trip was planned by the Guidance department to acquaint students thinking of going to community college with the school The bus arrived at Sheridan about and the guided tours lasted for about two hours The first stop was the Secretarial Science Department followed by the costume design class The Creative Art section Included animation graphic art and others After that the students visited the language rooms where students having spelling or pronunciation problems may receive help This part of the course Is optional Photography Afterwards the students visited the photography section which contained two large darkrooms and lighting studio for taking pictures Also Acton High students observed through a one way window the Child Education Course Sheridan has a fantastic videotape network and their own radio station Former Past Acton students were seen and gave their opinions of the campus These were Bonnie McKeniie Blythe Barry Margot Matheson and even Mrs Sheridan has an ettremely casual atmosphere You can rest In the lounge areas or just lunch in any of their three cafeterias The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by oil the participating Outers club new exciting On a rainy windy and cold September 30 24 students and four teachers set out to hike 13 miles of the Bruce Trail Boys and girls made up the group Near Cataract Ontario the hikers descended into a gorge and slithered behind a waterfall Further on they climbed up the Niagara Escarpment near Forks the Credit with the aid of ropes This was the first of the activities that are part of Acton High Outers Club Meet challenges Paul Tamblyn and Wally Rowley both of the science department are responsible for this program They offer this program to let the students meet challenges that are both mentally and physically demanding The participants will become efficient in map reading survival techniques canoeing and portaging woodcraft and other outdoor aspects of life last week the students went canoeing on Fairy Lake In a North canoe This holds about people and can really move along Orienteering Another Interesting activity of the club was done the weekend of October IS The use of tests were used to teach orienteering and initiative This was to develop skills in the use of a compass and map on an unknown area The students were given Instructions which they carried out and then were given more directions The area
