Four contest three Eden Mills seats Sparking the interest for the Eden Mills election scene la the query which should take residents of all villages to the polls namely Who can we elect who will stand up for the small communities against big regional government policies As it stands In Eden Mills four men are contesting for position on the three seat trustee board two Incumbents one a temporary stand- in and one other who until now has had little Inclination towards village politics David Masson David is a senior analyst with Ford of Canada who has been on the Eden Mills Board for the past two years and is interested in staying on to see the completion of certain proposals which he helped initiate would like to see Eden Mills under the one government of he said Until now the village has been split with one section in the Township of Nassagaweya County and the other in Wellington County David feels that if the village Is In only one county It will function more ef ficiently without the continual necessary referral to two school boards two police departments two township councils etc Controlled growth He would like to see extremely controlled growth for Eden Mills with at the same time provisions made for small one- bedroom retirementfee housing Such policies have already been discussed with the planning boards of and he said and a brief making such proposals was sent to the Regional Government Board some time ago Masson hopes to see the preservation of natural environ ment and is interested in following up a program started by the past trustee board in which the River Bank along the was cleaned out last year under the SWEEP program He would like to see that particular area In the village retained as a community park and completed by using the Opportunities for Youth grants to aid in Its development Give confidence I would insist on restrictive bylaws in which Eden Mills trustees have more Jurisdiction in what buildings are being allowed he said and pointed out that if there was a 100 per cent turnout at the polls on December making the election a decisive one the elected board would have stronger confidence as village representatives to appear before senior levels of government on its behalf He also feels that for too long the role of the village trustee has been played down in all parts of Canada but that it is time that communities looked at their positions and elected responsible members to their village councils to ensure their voice In regional affairs Harold Tomlinson Another contestant for the Eden Mills trustee board is a secondtime rounder who has re- whetted his appetite for village politics after a period of 11 years The main reason am running said the selfemployed village business man is that I think its time that the half of Eden Mills had representation again I am interested In more efficient roadways better village lighting and the completion of the new river park which was started up last summer under the govern mental SWEEP program 22year resident A resident of Eden Mills for the past years Harold Tomlinson moved to the village from in and has been taking over the post as village trustee since the death of Norm Marshall Jr He is in tune with community living and a strong worker in many of its affairs including the Boy Scout organization and the Eden Mills and District Community Club He is also the secretary of the Guelph Naval Veterans Association Harold looks forward to seeing Eden Mills amalgamated under one town ship Instead of being split between and I would also like to see that our village has notification of any building permits to be Issued In the village by the townships he said and the rural atmosphere in Eden Mills preserved with reasonable growth Harry Harry Schelke has been a resident in the village of Eden Mills lor the past IB years and along with his wife Helga and their three children prefers the rural way of life enjoying the of smallcommunity living An electrician by trade has been only passingly Interested in village politics until urged by friends to take part He Is anxious that Eden Mills retain its unique qualities losing none of its characteristics and is hopeful that the people In this area will support him In his fight to preserve the villages environ ment as well as controlling rapid growth Rodney Bell RODNEY BELL Rodney Bell Is one of the Incumbents on the Eden Mills Trustee Board and as a profes sional engineer looks at the village as a tremendous place to live and raise his family I would like to be elected he said in order to pursue policies already started such as amalgamation of Eden Mills under one township and the by pass of the Line around Eden Mills limited development A family man with four ydfl children he hopes to see Mills stay as It Is with limited development Having lived In this community for eight years the last two of which he served as village trustee Bell has been partly responsible for seeing new proposals get on the road He la past president of the Village District Community Club and the present chairman of the Recreation Committee I am not in favour of regional government and I would like to see the role of village trustee preserved he said however from a realistic standpoint he recognizes the probable inevit ability of regional government and for this reason would like to continue on In Ms capacity as trustee and hopes to see tlw Eden Mills Board elected full strength so that the village amalgamation and road diversion will be completed before higher government comes into authority Brownie news 2nd Eden Mills Brownies The village streets of Eden Mills were thoroughly cleaned up of all litter before the snow on Sunday November 12 by an enthusiastic bunch of
