picture of agriculture in Canada at a special meeting held recently at the Public School when Ian McNoughton a professional planner from Kitchener pointed out the need for agricultural men to band together or lose all the best farm land areas In the country The meeting was a Land Use Seminar sponsored by the Federation of Agriculture and Peter Hannam Editor of the Federation newspaper News and Views was the chairman who introduced the speaker Mr McNoughton explained to his audience that it was vitally important that all official plans be understood and that each farmer should know what affect it will have on his particular environment Those who dont have an official plan will lose their tight of land severances he pointed out and said that planning was only common sense and that good agricultural land Is too valuable to sell it short that 53 per cent of the mile tract of shoreline of Lake from a planners point of view that was bad planning Bad planning said costs money raises taxes and allows ribbon stripping which requires more services than normal community living Planning costs money he said but no planning at all will cost a great deal more Band together Also speaking at the meeting was Douglas Hoffman a professor of soil sciences at the University of Guelph He urged the farmers to hand together and force the cities to take over the low quality lands for building rather than the better agricultural lands which will Rockwood Bowling and bowling new Harvey Harold Theaker won s week low double lvalue tournament ana ire now eligible for tone tin competition Danny We are experiencing the loss by retirement of hip quality soil Professor Hoffman said and explained that while selling one acre of prime land might give the farmer a high return compared to the cash value of crops he could grow a widespread and in discriminate sale of land made rural planning impossible Energy He referred to the energy crises which will eventually decrease the lie of farm lands because as gas goes up It will be too expensive to use the mechanized equipment required on farms today W may have to resort to the old horse and buggy said Hoffman who made a further plea that once land Is gobbled up by asphalt and roofs it lost to Dr Hoffman told the farmers that if they are really concerned about their land they should attend every open meeting held in their districts Have views on regional government he urged Read up and become well informed on land value and make your own councils aware of Prime agriculture In Southern Ontario of 32 million acres of land are classed as prime agriculture yet farming has declined from involving 7 6 percent of the population in to involving 3 percent in 1971 Between 1951 and I960 two million acres of farmland was lost to farming in Southern Ontario and between and 1971 another million acres was lost 30 per cent He pointed out that 30 per cent of our income is from people associated with agriculture from selling machinery to food processing And yet he said they say the economic returns are not great enough A session of questions and answers gave the farmers present an opportunity to discuss and air particular problems such as loss of lana value and restrictive sale by laws Attempts were made to reach conclusions which will be forwarded by the Federation of Agriculture to Ottawa so that the voice of the farmer In will be heard more clearly This was the last of a series of three county meetings to discuss rural planning Prop use new Elora arena A proposal for constructing a new arena over the present ice surface in has
