OUR REAPERS WR stones make highway dangerous Dear Sir The following will describe the present conditions and background of Highway North from Acton to In the summer of 1971 the Ministry of Transport and Communications undertook to rebuild the six miles of highway from Acton to Osprlnge Prior to this time the Ministry in their wisdom saw fit to purchase tend and remove all trees so that the road could bo widened to Highway specifications It Is our belief that the road Is not even built to County road specifications During the past two years this supposedly new and improved highway has only been free of dust loose gravel and flying stones for seven months The flying stones have resulted in many broken windshields smashed headlights ruptured radiators and In fact one broken house window The loose gravel has been a factor In accidents along this stretch of road Dust caused by the many vehicles travelling this major highway make living conditions almost unbearable It Is not unusual to see cars driving with headlights on in the daytime as vblbulty Is reduced at times to zero This busy highway is extremely dangerous for the many school children walking and waiting tor their bus People walking on this road often must turn their backs to avoid dust and protect their faces from flying stones Rain changes the dust to a sea of mud Calcium will reduce only the dust but not the flying stones An oil seal as used last summer la only useful until the first frost We would like to make two suggestions to the Ministry of Transport and Commun ications to alleviate the dust and flying stones The first and most practical Is to lay a permanent seal The second suggestion is to reduce and enforce the speed limit to miles per hour Over a period of a few years we believe the permanent seal would be less expensive than the constant grading watering and temporary oiling of the highway Yours truly Concerned Travellers of Highway Why no British history in schools Dear Sir I have just had a call from pupils of Centennial School They were seeking Information on a protect relating to I told them that I the oldest living teacher of their school had been presented with the cornerstone of the old school by the wreckers who perhaps thought more of the building than the people themselves I relayed It on to Mr of our Museum I told them of the boy from Eden Mills who trudged three miles to school at No 1 every school day in the year and won the prize 1 had offered for best attendance But what they told me shocked me They dont study British History any more Just Canadian and American Why should our young Canadians be burdened with the stories of presidents and American wars The of Education Is letting American money and business In our country which is by the way a part of the British Commonwealth sway them too far from the straight Canadian path I must not forget to tell you how up-to- date they arc with patriotic songs The Queen Canada and The Maple Leaf Forever Is their limit 1 showed the pupils the picture of a former king of England but only one the boy with the shock of black hair stopped to read the words below and he may have realized that some Englishmen have been quite closely connected with Canada Yours truly Ont Ice Review best yet The Acton Press Wodnoiday April Continued from Page Steven Parker Tarn Debbie Kearley Jonathan Janet McLeod
