county In the tournament They received provincial champion and a set of glasses for the win In order to qualify for the pro vincial tournament the team had to defeat five other teams in the one meet played In Newmarket in March Total score for the five games they played in the tournament was Don Hamilton won a small trophy for taking high single honors Lets talk about HORSES with Jennifer Ban- By Jennifer Barr Back to business this week with a trio of questions on horse breeding a very timely and interesting subject Question What Is the youngest age that a mare can be bred Answer- It Is usually considered that three years la as young as a illy should be bred but some mares are quite mature enough at two particularly if they are from an early maturing breed and were born early in the year There is some evidence that breeding the two yearold might stunt her height growth if height is Important to you wait until the third year A stud farm near Ottawa has done experiments with the breeding of yearlings The fillies saw were in excellent shape and were fed very heavily but conclusive results as to percentage of stunting If any was not then available Be on the safe side and give your mare a chance to grow before making her a mother Question I want to breed my mare this year but am new to the game At what tune of year should she be bred We dont have a very warm barn so I dont want one of those January foals Answer Thebcsttlmetobreed a mare for an easy birth and healthy foal la the natural time- Spring A mare should be lean not thin rather than fat at the end of the winter and should be starting to gain on the rich spring grass before she Is bred Then she stands a good chance of conceiving first time If you have her covered in June site will foal the following May which is Just perfect with new grass for that foal If she doesn t catch on first covering It Is not too late to rebreed her next heat three weeks later However If you want to show the colt extensively as a weanling It will be necessary to breed the mare early enough for her to foal In late winter The foal will be larger and more mature for showing but this is not recommended for amateurs Question My mare is due to foal in the middle of April and I dont know what to do How will I know when her time has come Answer Dont panic shell manage fine and the less you do the better I trust you have been feeding her well with all the right nutrients and that you have been gradually increasing her grain Well now is the tune to decrease the grain and hay slightly but increase her number of feeds A small amount often will help her squashed turn About a week before foaling her abdomen will drop and the bones on either side of her tall will soften In fact her whole nether region will look swollen and loose Her udder will fill and wax will appear dripping from the teats any time from three days to a few hours before foaling As her contractions start she will be restless and have a desire to be alone When the foal starts to come she will usually lie down perhaps break out Into a sweat and quickly give birth If she seems to be in deep labor for more than an hour with no results call your vet However nine times out of ten she will foal while you go for coffee after sitting up with her for three nights Marcs are like that The new bom foal must have the umbilical stump disinfected with strong veterinary iodine such as Churchill and receive preventive tetanus shots from the vet as soon as possible after birth Vou realize that this is just a capsule answer and you would be wise to read a good book on the subject such as Mares Foals and Foaling by Please send letters to Jennifer Barr 2 Acton The Acton Free Preu Wednesday April B7 wants annual to open Eden shop The district
