The Acton Free Frew Wed September Will keep identity Orv Chapman says Bob Drinkwalter has overall view The man who moved to Ac ton some yean ago to be come one active com members is making his stand regional politics with the hope or making Ac ton representation on the new council a constructive and worthwhile one Orval Chapman a five year on Actons Council who has also served for four years on the local school board came originally from the town of Weston He feels with that background he can relate the problems or Weston and Metro Toronto with that of Acton and her new role as her identity and will be considered as Acton for many years he said and referring to Weston which was In corporate Into metro some years ago said Weston Is still very much Weston I do not In pat stands he said but feels that the councillors chosen to represent Acton should be responsible thinking people qualified to handle Actons affairs He is not concerned that Acton a will not be heard as against the larger Georgetown community as Acton and to gether will balance me two ward voice of Georgetown Larger area He prefers North as a suitable name for the new own as he feels it best describes the total people must begin to think of themselves as living in the larger area at opposed to individual wards As a past member of the Acton School Board Mr Chapman remembers the major fear at the time of amalgamation to county boards Everyone was afraid that Acton would not have a say when schools were considered he said But it didn work out to the ment but instead Acton schools flourished He sug that if handled as ex with Acton strongly represented the community could prosper to its better ment The two comprised votes of Acton and will balance out and fears of limited powers are not fled Need Industry Mr Chapman feels that jew Industry is particularly light Industry where women con become employed and local children able to find jobs at employ able age without hav ing to go afield He sees the trend toward apartments and would advocate some per centage but prefers single family homes Apartment living has Its place City people can rent apartments and be In open Acton spaces He Is insistent how ever he would like to sec Ac- Ion retain her small own qualities I He sees the need for shop- ping plazas with many rest dents buying elsewhere be cause they enjoy the plaza atmosphere But he is aware of the Importance of keeping local enterprise alive ana feels that It local stores arc not patronized they could be come obsolete and residents would suffer from higher costs Availability With his zest for regional pel I Iks Mr Chapman has checked his a a liability to attend meetings and give strong representation He says that there has been too little public communication and explanation as to the role of the and whys of the new government He feels that all council meetings should be open but that committee meetings should be kept within the committee until firm decisions are made Too much confusion exists as to the set up of tonal government I would like to sec more public enlightenment The whole point of ional government CHAPMAN Mr Chapman Is to sup ply taxpayers with the best possible service In the most economical way Chapman the man who says he has ways been known as the Scrooge on most boards feels that he would work to wards costs on all Issues be ing kept to a realistic level without extravagant spend ing I don t mind spending money it It warranted he said but do not like to see It Varied Chapman a contribution to Actons community life has been varied Councillor school board member chair man of council police and fire committee and a member of the Acton parks and recreation committee he has also served as chairman of a finance and property committee on the Unified Board of Acton United Church He has managed to combine Interests with his position as manager of the A Green Refractories Plant People and can t do a proper job he said and he is prepared to devote his extra time fully to the Job as cillor it he is elected A spectator sportsman Chapman would like to see parkland developed and recreation facilities enlarged as Acton boundaries expand with development absorbing the costs He is a great believer in honest political stands with out necessity for compromise and staunchly supports the importance of Acton strong Ward Esquesing RUSSELL Because he feels that he has the experience and initiative to represent the people of Acton and the area of North Bob Drinkwalter Is making his run for one of the council seals In Ward One Acton of the new regional government town which he opes will be called North A four year veteran of Ac ton Council and a quality con trol manager at Standard Products of Georgetown Bob feels that being employed in one town and working In an other could be beneficial allowing him the opportunity to assess the overall situation of the area getting the feci ings of people in all three areas against that of only one lown He feels that Acton one ward voice in Council as opposed to two In the town of Georgetown is not sarlly a detriment It de pends greatly he said on the reprcscntaliv elected lie feels that if Ihovoiccsnro strong enough thoy will carry sufficient weight in Acton s interests I feel that party politics should not be a factor when your choice of candidates in Acton ore going lo require persons who ore to present strong voice to ensure that a fair tax base is arrived at He is particularly concerned for the elderly and Ihose on fixed incomes Open mind Bob likes to think man who has always had an open mind to argument His big fear of regional govern is that government will get too far away from the people and it will be up to the local representative to keep the public informed as to what is going on Wc must be available for all people problems he said and we must keep our constituents up to date Drinkwalter feels lhat government should take a serious look at the housing industry As far as Acton is concerned Acton sewage facilities are not extensive enough this time to modate too great an Increase in population He feels lhat servicing would be the con trolling factor in Acton both the consideration of high rise apartments or industry Rigid controls He said that Industry Is definitely required In Acton and it is most essential that council continue to explore possibility or approving it only with rigid controls on what type would be allowed to come in Again with present sewage facility conaldera lions An avid sportsman Bob Drinkwalter enjoys golf curling as his own activities but as a soccer and baseball fan favors a park which could facilitate all sport require ments I would like to see the whole of Fairy Lake deve loped surrounding lands purchased by the region to be developed as parkland only for the people In the district But It will be of the utmost importance lhat equitable guide lines are set and lowed in the of parks in d recreation Priorities He is also interested in other phases plnmikg and development citing street and sidewalk reconstruction with the recycling of garbage given priority by the new council us there have been a number or studies made could Indicate that an to present and future disposal problems are in recycling all his Interest in pro gress he is also concerned that cost of regional salaries could get out or hand He recognizes II at people will to receive remuneration for services hut feels that of importance is working to keep costs down as opposed to extravagant spending He trusts that his exper or four years on Acton Council where he served as chairman of the works committee six years on the Acton Planning Board with three as and three years on the County Plonn Association as well as his rote In community vice work have given him the rcqu red experience to supply sufficient representation for Acton He was president of the board of rectors of Ac ton Communily Credit Union on which he served for years four years on the board of directors of the Acton Curl Club and two years on the Minor Executive His Interests have been ried he feels that he BOB DRINKWALTER vote the time required to make his stand for office worthwhile for the whole Director Jim Gray of who served as director of social and fomily services In since 1970 died Tuesday Sept 18 Prior to coming to work for
