By Wendy Thorn ion Since this Is the Free Press tennis edition I should be writing something special Unfortunately the past few weeks have been quite hum drum leaving with no exciting or amusing tales to tell I thought about writing in words or less What Acton Means to Mc But 15 minutes of muddling it about in my head brought no real results I only know that moving here close to Acton years ago opened the door to a far more interesting life than I probably would have had staying in Oakville or Tot onto And working for the Acton Free Press not only opened another door but laid out a few red carpets as well What else can I say Maybe I backtrack a bit into my own pages from the past recent past its true but my past nevertheless and repeat my account of one spring day in 1870 that really might be subtitled what living In Acton means to me Junes 1970 This particular day was nonproductive as far as housework went Everything was going wrong and then I opened the door to let the cat out A great breeze smelling strongly of Balm of Gill cad and Choke cherry blossom rushed in and in the trees themselves four Baltimore Orioles splashed against the green After a brief con sultation with myself we decided I should take ad vantage of the day and go for a walk As soon as I opened the door there was a stampede The two hounds Rip and Sue were first out Sue bounced and twisted with excitement her old pappy Just plodded along but with a gleam In his eye Following them were the cats Five started out but the number gradually diminished as they became disgusted with Sues antics as she played chicken with them Finally only remained Since she was In a family way J bawled Sue out and told her to behave She looked properly penitent and walked nicely until she turned a bend In the path I heard the thud of big feet then silence When I rounded the corner there she was sitting quietly but with a perplexed look on ihtir face- Then I noticed that the sleek Jetblack dog had acquired a fluffy orange tail Prying her rear end up I found looking a little and very Indignant As soon as the cat baa room to coll she exploded from under the pup and they headed off in different directions leaving along Horse nip That last long AH six horses were waiting for me at the pasture fence I guess with the high wind they were all feeling a little silly and they pushed and nipped at me as we walked down to the pond I was once told that to at tract a horse all you have to do is make a noise a crimped oat perhaps I could have discouraged their company if I could have made a noise like a wet saddle blanket but they stuck to me like large burrs Fortunately for ir we met the geese by the stream The five adults were herding the five goslings along and woe to anything that came within biting distance The horses knew this from experience Goose bit Poor Daisy pony was the tost to go by and a goose latched on to her tall and held on for a good feet hissing through clenched bill flap ping her wings and trying to beat Daisy s bottom with them between bounces The horses had barely disappeared over the hill when three mallards hearing all the honking circled ana dropped into the pasture This intrusion was too much for Mama goose She chased the ducks down the fence line with her entourage waddling behind Eight kept dar ting by skimming the mos quitoes off the top of the clover then one found a fluff of goose down and flew up high with it When he let go the others dove at it as it slowly drifted down until one caught it and carried it up again After a while realized they trying to catch It at EirsL They Just buzzed It seeing how close to the ground they could let ft float before snatching it up again I sat and watched till I beard the school bus When arrived shortly after I tried to look apologetic about the dishes not being done He Just looked lovingly exasperated and said I know The wind was blowing so you went and sat on the hill and talked to your horse Us nice
