Residents need answers Residents or Acton have every reason to receive some good an about the mix up over repairing a water break on Church St which left almost the entire town on low pressure and without water for several hours Saturday If there had been a serious fire the consequences could have been disastrous The control of water in Acton Is to be a regional responsibility Had it been a local responsibility the break would have been repaired and only a small segment of the town affected The fact the new regional set up controls water and sewers does not inspire much confidence in their ability to maintain the service to which the people of Acton are accustomed Only one piece of equipment was on hand in Acton to repair the break so town workmen had to travel to Georgetown to procure the equipment necessary It was necessary to drive a all Ihe way from the Georgetown yard at about miles an hour and also bring gravel from Georgetown to Acton It is ridiculous In an emergency situation that both men and equipment are all in a yard miles away Then it seems someone had been tampering with the valves When workmen attempted to shut off Church St between Frederick and Fellows Sts almost the entire town was affected except Glenlea and the block Explanations there may be but perhaps it was fortunate the break happened when it did It has ex posed a real weakness in both the administration for emergencies and an inadequate knowledge of the water system while some town men are away on vacation Meanwhile residents of Acton would be interested to know why most of the equipment necessary to operate the new town of Halton Hills must necessarily be stored in yards miles away They also be interested in knowing why work men must first report to Georgetown before commencing work Certainly everyone can understand the necessity of a central depot but they are entitled to ask why everything seems to be going east the Georgetown area leaving Acton unprotected in emergencies J Mm Editorial The Acton Free Press Wed August Acton in Haton Hills Tom When the Minister of Industry and Tourism Claude Bennett visited Halton Hills last week he wondered if there was room for further industrial expansion Mayor Tom Hill who met the Minister at the Georgetown Market Centre said there was no serviced industrial land left are really hemmed in in commented Bennett Mayor Hill should have known better The Georgetown industrial picture may be crowded but there is still plenty of serviced industrial land available in Acton which is also part of Hills believe it or not Mayor Hill should have told both P Jim Snow and Mr Bennett that Acton had room for industrial expansion He is also the mayor of Ward which is Acton History repeating itself Feeding the Swans at Fairy Lake Bill Smiley About my wife and CoaCola I have a number of things to be disposed this wee first is my wife Don t worry I not going to her in basement and cover her with fresh cement That old fashioned and you usually get caught I going to her in the attic a gag her mouth rolled up in a piece of lhat roofing lhat will be left over after our shingling job which she Now I nothing against women particularly though I have Generally and nothing roofers at all they charge loo much and get in all sorts of side issues like louvres and in and squirrels I know what a squirrel and I vc a vague idea about insulation but I haven a clue about louvres I thought it was some kind of an art gallery in Paris but it turns out to be a couple of holes up around Ihe roof so the air can circulate It not that my wife has an extra bi mouth for a woman but time she opens It It costs me money I had a per fectly straight forward deal a roofer to put on a roof That what roofers arc for besides taking them off Admittedly not any people call up a roofer and I d 1 my roof off But as a rule they lake off the old one before they put on the one OK when the Old opened her mouth What about the She t know an insulation if it bit her on the kneecap but she has this sub conscious desire to be an engineer The roofer is a fellow but he going to argue with a lady He agreed that you can t have too much insulation Then he said I guess you want a couple of louvres I just nodded numbly A couple of art museums Fine Might as well go Tor the works There I disposed of my wife and I feel better already The blood is beginning to recede from my head and go back to its normal channels But I have a few other people to dispose of so let s get on with It How about Coca Cola 1 can feel the blood mounting again Perhaps it s a mistake taking on both my wife and Coca Cola in the same column They arc both If not blc But my wife is much more formidable Anyway There is th fellow Donald who works for Coca Cola Ltd He is a Not a bouncer which we don need when we re dealing with soft drinks but a Whenever he sees the word Coke written th a small c he pounces He get hysterical but he does get a bit stuffy He pounced on a column of mine recently In which the word was used twice with a small Two of the more that 100 papers using this column sent me along his hurt letter of protest HI of the Lake Simcoe Adv and jli Mrs of the Express I hope old write the same letter to all the other editors Knowingweeklyedllors Imsure ifhedid that most of the letters wound up in the trashcan I won I bore you with brother s whole letter which was almost Identical in both cases sorry Donald because it is a very boring letter But sample Coke distinguishes and identifies only the product of this Company large and we must if necessity be diligent in safe guarding it against Improper use lest inadvertently it loses its distinctiveness and significance How about that Of necessity D ligent in safeguarding That language straight out of a novel by Dickens And do you think the word Coke is distinctive and significant Lest you should Inadvertently think otherwise pray do not be deceived by the obtuse ramifications of the unholy and insidious media How that I can write that stuff myself Oh well Burwash old boy It takes all kinds But you re getting there kid On June 12 you were Assistant Secretary at Coca Cola On June you were Secretary It must be that magnificent Churehillian prose style In the meantime Is it all right If I burn a little coke in my fireplace Or should I Just cool off and have a Pepsi The admission by S President Richard Nixon this week that he knew of the Watergate cover up despite repeated denials brings another stage to a drama which has enveloped not only the United States but has drawn fascinated TV viewers across Canada and the world Somehow the drama resembled that which took place in the palmy days of the Roman Empire when Julius Caesar conspired and was conspired against but Arnold Edmborough writing in the Financial Post has a more apt precedent with King John of England A new production of Shakespeare King John opened in England Stratford Theatre last week just a day before the debate of Richard Nixon began on TV Edmborough points out that the charges against John and Nixon have to do with rulers putting themselves above the law King John as anyone who has read And All That knows was a Bad King He usurped the throne from his nephew and arranged to have that nephew killed He challenged the spiritual authority of the Pope and refused to recognize the Pope s nominee as Archbishop of Canterbury He was rapacious in his tax demands and ultimately sought a humiliating submission to Rome in order to save his hide when France invaded his own kingdom If in fact the king as the medieval mind believed held his office under divine authority how could he hold it if he denied that authority or set his own whim above the law The night after King John opened the impeach ment debate started on television about Richard Nixon putting himself above the law and the enormities in the body politic that were caused by that action It was also announced the day after the Briefly The death of Katharine last week reminds her friends in Elora and across Ontario of what a remarkable person she was before ill health forced her retirement five years ago She bought and published the Express with very little staff outside her family and won numerous awards for her editorial page She was vigorously involved with conservation and had great satisfaction in what was accomplished lte history of the Elora area fascinated her and she continued the work of earlier Express editors and the Fergus News Record in keeping up public interest A highlight for her was the discovery of a collection of pictures and paintings that had been thrown in the town dump She scavenged every bit and added them to her collection The writer knew her for some years through the Canadian Women s Press Club in which she was a popular and much admired figure E CraggmThe Fergus News Express opening of the televised debate that the president would now release all his tapes to tW special prosecutor One was reminded strongly of John s first disobedience of Car the Papal Legate and his later groveling in trying to restore a balance that was already too far out of kilter to be mended Then take the figure of the Bastard in King John a man who is outiide the normal court circle but gets into it by his native ability and his large capacity to speak the truth to keep a bargain and behave like an honest decent citizen the middle of a bunch of self seekers con nivers and timeservers He is the man to whom when John has finally become so entangled his own moral ineptitude he gives complete authority to act for him and restore England position in the eyes of the world Kissinger is an alien Kissinger has got through by ability Kissinger is the man who faces down corruption and by sheer integrity I am not of course suggesting he is a bastard but he fulfills the same role for President Nixon as fulfills for King John writes Edmborough THE ACTON FREE PRESS Authorized Co IB44 to 1974 we had smell yet no growls no petitions If Acton is such an undesirable place to live 1 say out And if Beardmore moved out many in Acton now would have to move out too Beardmore spent plenty on control years ago and now what is better smell or a place to live and work Smell over not only in Acton Buy an oxygen tent or a mask and give Beardmores a hand not a smack This may not please some but it Trimmer Coleman Dear Editor It makes one wonder when he reads various articles on smells and Ihe hostile attitudes of people who live in Acton today as to why in 1974 it should become such a big deal know from experience of many years In Acton there were smells in town worse than Beardmore s yet these were by passed and became the target of abuse In those days it could not all blamed on sewers as If many remember we t any remember hogs in Acton cows goats and horses too Later we had turkeys and a We also had smoke from a foundry and smoke from passing trains We know we lived near the GTR tracks There was a dump at back of the park one at Third Line welding smoke car exhaust and many others There was Dog harassing ducks on fake Dear Sir While visiting near Fairy Lake
