Lets get started Letter to the Editor Acton Free Press Acton Ontario Dear Sir In reply the teller from Willing to Work and your editorial comment of he I week before I would tike to say I too fed with Regional Government With everyone so dissatisfied why can I something be done It doesn seem to be a very democratic Province to mt think a Poll in the Press would be a good start as more people would likely put in on a ballot write a letter If enough results were obtained we could sec about an organization as suggested Has anyone thought about a ballot in the Georgetown paper as well If everyone just sits back and cries about It nothing will be done we all know it takes a bit of cooperation to accomplish worthwhile let get started Signed ted Up Too OUR READERS WRITE Waiting for snowplows February Dear Sir I would like to bring to your attention a situation which to me seems rather serious Alter a snowfall whether light or heavy Acton always seems to he snowed in for several hours until the snowplows etc get back from clearing the roads of Georgetown When w were not a part of Hilton Hills Aclon seemed to manage very well the roads being cleared as soon as there was enough snow for Ihh to be done It wis only small town hut enough all of the necessary services were done promptly and very well Now the town has expanded and become part of Ihe town of Hills a person would be led to believe hat any service would be done more efficiently situation is just Hopes for better policing and the roads are unfit for sort of vehicle except snowmobiles which are not permitted on the roads anyway One of these days someone will get seriously injured or even killed then maybe something will be done about this problem Tint Is why I bring this to your attention If you could possibly do something about this situation very quickly I sure that it will he greatly appreciated You never know you might even save a life Thank you very much for taking time to read thb letter Yours sincerely Grade student Acton High School The The Aclon Tree Press Ontario Dear Sir It would appear to be certain thit Regional Police will replace the Ontario Provincial Police in the and rural areas of Hills We in only hope that with this transition here will be an in policing the rural area in particular Thtexfsllng force In Milton lacks Ihe necessary staff to work efficiently I am not nullity of the police work but the availability of the police officers When rural resident makes a call to Milton and police officer Is available he usually If el several miles to Investigate unman sense should dictate that as well as a detachment cover the southern part Hills a convenient depot in tile Acton or Georgetown areas should service Ihe northern rural areas While Georgetown to have patrol cars coming out of woodwork the rural populition Is neglected I suppose the argument is tint the built up areas require more policing Hut mikes Appeal for funds Having formed the Area Ratepayers Association last fall to light Consolidated and ravel in its bid to open a new GOO south west of the group now finds Itself in need of funds As always in this type of situation It is Ihe large ion has the advantage It can afford to hire the most expensive lawyers anil pa far witnesses to bolster Us Indeed most of ex penscs can be written off ig company profits The Ratepayers Association I rod Greg tooper Toronto lawyer to represent it Mr Cooper is legl ommlttee for Sierra Club of and hi has hid ex and success in taking on large corporations when Hit environment is at si ike Mr Cooper represented the Association ably at the M held on Nov 1971 to hear Consolidited appeal against the rural zoning designation placed on their properl holdings the Council This hearing was adjourned pending a ruling from tin Commission The Municipal Hoard has now set aside two weeks in for the con tlnuation of the hearing and in addition Consolidated seems to have deliberately adopted tactles designed to deplete Ihe funds calling for hearings of prior to the I proper All of this lhat Association will be faced with a bill of HOME DELIVERY Press You can now stay in the comfort of your home and hove The Acton Free Press delivered to your door each Wednesday START NOW JUST PHONE 8532010 Legion Notes by GARY DAWKINS me angry while driving through George town to see several patrol cars within a mile and half stretch white we have vir ally none Considering the lack of staff and the distances that must be travelled the should be highly commended for arresting those responsible for removing mailboxes In favour of retaining the P bill would like to see the force strengthened and more conveniently located Tins particular area has been plagued by dog poisonings over an 18 month period an arson attempt and several other crimes in of a private residence in discriminate use fire arms by trespassers destruction to private property etc Our arc high yet wc have spend additional money on various means of security some monies spent on a continuing basis It would be reassuring to know that more police were available to patrol our roads on a continuing basis Protection of one s self and property against crime is one hut with a larger police force perhaps these criminals would be apprehended Yours truly Rural Resident for legal fees It is interesting to note that on the evening of both the Town of Hills Council and the SARA executive wen through the same soul searching process whether the cost of legal counsel could be justified The Speysidc Association executive voted unanimously in favour of retaining Mr Cooper and fighting Con soli dated to the bitter end The council passed a motion to defend Hills planning policies at the hearings In March This motion wis opposed by the three Georgetown councillors who were against committing Ihe Town to a possible expenditure for legal fees and expert witnesses It should be realised thot the Area Ratepayers will argue ease on social and environmental Impact Issues w the will not cover in its defence It is therefore very worthwhile and we feci to ho represented and represented by able legi counsel at the hearings However the group has a long haul ahead of it lo raise the necessary funds We appeal to nil those people who are interested in saving what is left the Niagara scarp- men in North An donations however small will be welcome Checks and money orders should be made payable to the Area Ratepayers Association and should be sent to Mr J A Sheldon President of A A R Milton W A Dale V S A It A The Acton
