Townshipstown unite to fight corridor banned together to for an independent study of the need for a kV hydro corridor from Bradley to Hal ton Hills Known as Interested Citi zens from Colbeck to Milton the group held a meeting in hall Thursday evening to organize Hills About farmers and land owners the majority of them from along the proposed route of the corridor attend Were organizing the three townships and Hal ton Hills so we can present a unified front to go in force to the Government and Ontario Hydro general chairman Bill Mann told those at tending including Hills Tom Hill Councillor Lea and Huron Bruce P Murray Gaunt A simitar meeting for Erin township residents at last week attracted 160 people Afms expressed by the group Include 1 Organizing to collective ly protect the Interests again the industrial giant Protect the farming community To stop Hydro from pushing ahead with the ley to Georgetown line and demand an enquiry as to whe ther the hydro corridor is necessary We are getting support from nil areas Mann claimed Schneider Apeak Vice John Schneider of Erin- owns hip Brampton industrialist re viewed the history of opposi tion to the corridor over the last three years He contends Ontario Hydro defined the area for the corridor without studying all the alternatives We arc asking that all the alternatives be explored He said the case was more complicated than previous decisions regarding lines in the Chatham and areas and stems from the cast west study of the Commission Tho nemesis Is where the northsouth Bradley to Georgetown line Joins the east west corridor Sol decided that since the boundary limits of the east- ended at the Nia gara Escarpment it would be up to his one man commission to name the point where the corridor crossed the Escarp ment He decided the belt point would be at and the rest of the corridor hinged on that decision though Hydro still has to take corridor to Kitchener through He noted Gordon or the Sixth Line Hills representing the Ontario Federation of Agriculture has sent a letter to Premier William Davis asking why the Bruce to proposal had been left out of the study area since It was after the hearings they discovered Ontario Hydro owned a site for another generating station on Delphi Point near Collingwood The group also learned that there was an existing kV corridor from near Camp Borden to Toronto with additional capacity for 12 megawatts which is as much power as is being used In Ontario today They were obviously ex Toronto corridor so why not study this alternate instead of another multl million altar line through Class A farm land from to Bruce Schneider asked Al though some Hydro people agreed it was an acceptable alternative Hydro refused to change their tune Hydro decided the corridor would go through In and they are still going through in Schneider noted Mr Kidd wrote the premier to say information had been withheld by Hydro at the Sol Commission hearing but Mr Davis said the matter had never been brought up Then came the new Min of the Environment McKcough he was walling for the environ mental report before it was decided whether there should be a public enquiry Into the north south corridor But said Schneider roughly one month after Mr wrote the letter outlining his position he de cided where the corridor was going to go The environmental report was issued December six months after Mr McKeough made his decision Then Mr McKeough left for a new portfolio We got reasonable cause to ask for an indepen dent study Schneider told the audience He said both Government and Hydro were discriminating against people along the corridor if one was not made because other areas of the province were accord the courtesy Safety factor Walter Scott safety en from George town said there were hazards living close to a 500 line of line would have the greatest exposure He claimed the corridor would draw in tricnl storms from three to five miles away and there would be substantial T V and radio interference especially where towers blocked T V He said even Ontario Hy dro admitted leakage from lines to such an extent it made getting on and off a vehicle a problem era ted instances where cattle would graze on one side or the other but would not feed the line He said it has been known for machines to up on their own and others won start when they are under the line influence citing the safety factors this could involve Huron Bruce M P P Mur ray Gaunt spoke briefly to the meeting noting the problem began in his riding at Douglas Point pointing out Hydros almost infallible decisions of the past were being question especially in riding where in the corridor from Douglas Point to Bradley Junction they decided to Jog around a bog and use good agricultural land The official reason was that Hydro did not want to bother the spotted turtles in the bog a reason accepted with some cynicism but accepted nevertheless Then It was revealed the spotted turtles did not exist in the bog they were further south near Sarnio Public confidence in Hydros compe tence decreased accordingly He pointed out Hydro pro jections of escalating power needs were found to Ire inac curate because the peak period of the year in was tially lower than in Decern ber indicating there could be major miscalcula tions for the province I couldnt understand why they wanted a Bradley to Georgetown corridor but is has been revealed Hydro wants to keep the existing to Toronto corridor for future Northern develop ment Mr Gaunt said that all power produced at the Bruce nuclear power plant could be transmitted in that existing way using only one- third leaving twothirds for northern power plants Now there another son it also assures Hydro of another power plant on Lake Huron Gaunt said the battle had just begun and urged the to get In and beat down the door of the Minister of En because cracks in the fa cade were showing A question and answer per followed in which Norman Bird suggested Hydro should level with farmers so Ihey could plan their operations much like Hydro tries to do Former hockey star Pierre a resident of the area said he wanted to fight this thing and urged the meeting to come up with something concrete they could put their teeth into Other speakers god farmers and land owners along the route to beg time by refusing land surveyors
