Lets talk about horses by Jennifer Barr A newspaper friend once said a definite plus In Journal ism was the doors It opened It a true one certainly gels lo meet the most fascinating people Recently I spent a delightful afternoon with Canada ThreeDay Event team coach and a world famous equestrian Sheila This courageous lady has been an international figure In the horse world for better than years A member of the British Event Team she Craved women could not only old their own in this most arduous and gruelling sport but as Sheila proved they could cxcell Rigorous ThreeDay Eventing Is a branch of equestrian sport that embraces dressage stadium jumping and cross country riding As its name implies most events take Ihree days and are a test of versatility for horse and rider The first day requires the horse to perform a sage test of preliminary standards the second day sees the same horse and rider charging across a rigorous cross country course at top speed over large and very solid fences The distance varies hut can be to miles The third day holds a stadium jumping course similar to but not as lough as Events are actually held two or even one day The cross country courses arc not as long or as hard However National and Olympic Events require the utmost of horse and rider Impossible Britain and the United States arc currently world leaders in this field When the Canadian Equestrian Team ing at next years Olympics had to face the luck of a coach and a time of 15 months It nor mnlly takes three to four years to prepare an Fvcnt Team capable of becoming world champions Canadian Equestrians may be raw and inexperienced but noone would accuse Ihem of being timid Sheila accepted the challenge and came to Canada last March to do the impossible Triumphing over Impos Is nothing new for Sheila Four years ago she broke her back for the second time Told she would never walk again she refused to accept a wheel chair status and is now not only walking but riding This kind of determination gives us a very good chance at that gold medal All eyes on us Ten months to go before D day and Sheila Is quite confident about her teams chances She sings the praises of some of the younger team members who have worked remarkably hard and explains the dlf ftculties of an English stranger trying to convince riders to change their styles and training methods Enthusiastic about the upswing of he sport if Canada succeeds at the Olympics Sheila says If we win the gold all eyes will be on us then the money will come and the sport can be organized It looks as if Sheila will revolutionize Eventing in Canada Heaven knows needs it and I for one am delighted she willing to work so hard for us My congratulations and lhanks to all who organized the excellent variety of horse events at the Fall Fair this past weekend There was something for everyone enthusiastically supported by a lot of good entries I won t mention names because I II forget someone there was a phenomenal
