Exciting activities planned New gym means more sports action Sports and leisure activities have become an inte gral part of the college community With the expanded athletic facilities planned for the new Brampton Cam pus Assistant Athletic Director Jim has devised a comprehensive and exciting program for both the students and the community Make a written proposals include seven program possibilities for the future some of which are already in progress on the old campus The possibilities Include intramural sports re creational activities instruction athletic program clubs varsity level competition and special events The activities listed include everything from archery yoga for students staff and community Plans for the recreational wing Indicate a gymn two squash courts offices exercise room sauna and the student lounge which is glassed in and overlooks the gym Students will be responsible for the planning of activities and operation of the lounge without direct athletic administration supervision A well developed outdoor program is in the works with facilities for jogging and instruction in camping and canoeing proposed as well as crosscountry skiing and skating on the pond Skis have been bought for use next year and Makela is planning a network of crosscountry trails on campus Plans or outdoor playing fields have not yet been finalized envisions high community participation in the proposed activities while emphasizing at the same lime that student use has a high priority Student participation is expected to be high said Makela We have a 2j to percent participation rate now and I can see that going up when the new wing opens and we can operate from a to 10 p m Makela also agrees that the campus may in time develop its own athletic teams separate from those at It wit be two or three years before we re ready lodo that at a competitive level he said but I can sec it happening Makela philosophy for the new program is sum med up in his statement Leisure time is becoming more and more important If a student by particlpot ing in these programs can learn to cope with leisure time then 1 11 feel I accomplished something Sheridan counsellors to offer same service in improved quarters 7 Sheridan Style Student counselling services on the new Brampton campus will continue to offer the same avail able now in quarters better suited to counselling The office will be located on the concourse level off thecentral hall near the main entrance The facilities will be no larger but they will be more central and more convenient said Counselling Coordinator Art Hams Harris looks forward to occupying the new offices which will provide two private counselling offices and a reception resource area Our area at the existing Brampton campus is a multiple use space It will be great to have on area to ourselves Harris said The service will not change Our policy has al ways been to provide people with alternatives Harris added Counsellors based in will continue to go to the Brampton Campus on a regular schedule S dents therefore have a choice of counsellors to talk with Availability is the byword of counselling Harris explained adding that counsellors have been and will continue to be readily available to Brampton students Rob Till counsels lull time at Brampton Oakville- bascd counsellors Linda B elf rage Rosemary Gaymer and Hams travel weekly to the Brampton Campus Wendy Weaverand Ted work out of the Oakville Campus only If the Brampton Campus wishes to provide a new look toward women in various occupations as dent Porter has suggested will counselling services concentrate in that area Hams replied that student counselling at Sheridan College has never been sexist If a woman tests show that she has an aptitude for say civil engineering then good by all means do it Programs transfer The oneyear Art Fundamentals program will be exclusively offered at the new Brampton Campus next year Up until now the program has been available to students at both Brampton Campuses The program emphasizes individual self dis covery since its aim Is to provide exposure to as many aspects of the arts as possible in two semesters It is designed as an introductory year for students who possess a creative aptitude but are uncertain about where they should channel their abilities For this reason students applying for admission need not submit a portfolio demonstrating design ability Since the program started in 1970 graduates have entered and successfully completed the Graphic De sign fashion Technique and Design Applied Photo graphy and Animation programs in addition to any one of Iht five crafts and design studios at the School of Design in Also next year the first year of the Illustration program will transfer from the Campus to the Brampton Campus Illustration offered as a three- ear option in the Graphic gn program Centre for Women extends services to Brampton When the new Brampton Campus opens there should be Centre for Women similar to the exist one at the Cammis Shclagh Wilkinson Director of the Sheridan Centre for Women would like to sec a complete au operation the new campus with re source centre women studies courses and service for women inside and outside the college When the centre opened January 1975 the Ini response came from women in Brampton who formed a group and met regularly at a local Wilkinson explained The series of meetings which she attended was a direct result in the forma lion of the Brampton Women Centre and the Bee hive group for housewives Although the centre is physically situated at the Campus Wilkinson has had the opportun ity to speak to several groups of students and fa cut ty at the Bramplon Campus Wilkinson sees a need to work more closely with the Brampton students and the newly formed wo men s groups in the area Already Sheridan is offer ing Assertiveness Training at the Brampton Centre Tor Women and several women s courses have been running successfully at the Brampton Campus on Church SI during the day and evening Discovery I and II designed for women who want to reenter the work force or pursue educational goals will be of fered again in September while Psychology of Wo men is running now and Women in the Media will start n April Wllkinbon plans to offer the Women Here Wo men Now course which features a diffennl discus each week on contemporary issues of particu lar interest to women She also plans to initiate a course on either Women In Ihe Law or Women in Literature Based on the success of the new monthly Hen ton lecture seminar scries at the Cam pus Wilkinson hopes to organize similar program In Brampton in addition to the weekly film series The Reel World She is also looking the possibility of holding a housewives conference featuring seminars guest speakers and panel discussion The conference would focus on The Choice Is Yours Wilkinson said In order to fulfill yourself as a woman you don have to have a career Too many times house wives feel put down because the feminist movement suggests you have to be out of the home to be fulfilled The operative word is choice cither to career woman or a housewife or a combination of the two further educational institutions should help people develop lo their full potential in what ever nee they make She says more women art choosing to return to as maturt students And based on statistic is real to assume that a large of l Brampton student body will be mature women This seems to be a growing trend at many institutions as women begin to make Ihe of reentering education thereby developing new careers said Wilkinson She technology programs at the Brampton Campus offer tremendous potential for women who want a well paying job ana fulfilling career I be lieve that technology programs will appeal to ma lure women once Ihey realize the job potential thai exists for graduates tor still In high school we will con tinue to visit the schools and show films and talk about all the programs that are available to both men and women Sheridan is committed to helping students realize their full potential and whatever they choose they should be encouraged to meet their objectives Wilkinson said
