Banff with friend Alice Hatfield We were going on a six day mountain trail ride in July We started packing buying repacking in January planning everything down the last detail so things hopefully would go without hitch Then having wound our selves up thoroughly we took the train to have a couple of days in which to unwind It was great talking to other passengers watching scenery from the dome car having dinner all set out in the dining car having beds made up and down Quite the life for two days only thank heavens How different it was this year I was lo go out for a week with outfitters Warner and who were having their first group rides this summer and take a few pictures for them We were to leave here Sun day but I had been so caught Up in other things I start packing till Saturday night and even then in a very haphazard way As wc started the five hour mile drive to Banff I thought about that Thursday evening years ago Alice and I waving goodbye lo our families and excitedly start out from Union Station on a luxurious trip to Banff To begin with this year my husband had already been up in the mountains for nine weeks working at the trail ride camp before I could join him so there was no waving goodbye lo anything but the dogs before we left We climbed into the truck at five in the morning number one son Jim came with me to drive the truck back He needed it to get to his bummer job each day Number two son David was us beciuse like the rest of us he had never seen the mountains close up And for an that a sad state of affairs The third passenger was Heather As near as I can figure she was brought along to sit between the two boys on the drive home to see that they fight Jim idea And in the back was Midi cat the semi wild one who was here when we bought the farm and three of her kits As Warner Ma stable had an excess of mice and we had an excess of cats we packed them between my duffle bags to take with us So there we were heading south on country roads toward the David Thompson Highway As yet every drive to Banff is a new lencc new routes different weather and seasons various times or day and night In July took a run down one weekend and it was raining Driving across the David Thompson Highway I I see a mountain the clouds were that low but knew they were all around me somewhere It felt strange Even when I finally arrived at the trail ride camp clouds obscured much of the scenery and 1 found one mountain quite fascinating With bottom hidden in white mist and just its lop showing it looked as if the peak were suspended in mid air It was very clear to me and strangely logical why an people thought gods lived on top of mountain This trip though much to my delight the weather was perfect While heading south I caught glimpses of a magnificent sunrise off my left shoulder and kept on top of hills for a better look As we turned west toward The meeting was opened project with a reading entitled Mrs Tom Watson said that Autumn by
