McKenzie Smith new school name letter suggesting the name Mid die School for Board of at their meeting last Wednesday The letter was signed by Mrs Kalhy on behalf of over lnlerested citizens Many id signed in favor of the new name at the fill fur in September Director of Lin the board should serious con to the name Rested nil possible is well He added that the board his of time until the the year to nunc two new schools in In her letter Mrs The middle school ilue loopen next September in Acton his been a topic of people in Acton Among other items of interest is the name for the school Many of us feel lhat the school should have a name hat Ins special significance In hi people of this town Iherefore we are suggesting to you and the Board that the new school be named the Smilh Middle School in honor of two long time principals in Ihe schools of Acton Over 400 people had indicated that they support this Pur over years and Smith Rinded children through the important years of heir clement lid Both men were also very in their community When these men relired in heir former students and staffs gathered to honor them and wish them well This was just a small token of our appreciation to two men who gave so many years of service to others It may be unusual to name a school after two people but we feel it is appropriate in this case Pal and timer worked together as a team when they were at Acton School and later at Robert Little and I Ben nelt For this reason we would like to see their names logetheronthe new school as their names have been linked together in education for so many years We trust that the Board will find merit in this and decide in favor of this name If you wish we would be pleased to have someone appear before you and or the Board lo discuss this suggestion Consult Authority Downtown parking council topic again ENGRAVED CLOCK was presented to a 48year member of Acton fair board L Davidson Friday night The annual fair board dinner and dance was two hour parking should be enacted on Willow Bower Mill He noted merchants have indicated they won t invest in off street parking until some thing is done people who park all day in the same place every day Mr Hurst said church parking lots being fully utilized Councillor said the parking comes under the jurisdiction of parking authority and urged lhat body be asked to make recommendations the town before action is taken minority Mr Hurst countered Ihe problem was turned over to Ihe parking authority eight months ago and nothing has resulted Mr Hyde said while the crisis situation exists in the downtown area because of Mill Street reconstruction the police have the authority to limit parking on side streets to two hours Ihe same as they do for funerals and snow plowing Robert Austin said of hose items were covered in the town parking by law and questioned whether he police could limit parking because of reconstruction Mr Hyde wondered if the police had manpower lo enforce the two hour limit even if the town did enact it and Mr Hurst suggested people would only have to receive a ticket once and they would obey the law Nol much hope Mr Austin said he is in favor of two hour parking and has been pushing the idea for some lime without much sue cess and noted he hold out much hope of being able to talk Ihe parking authority Into supporting his view He noted the crisis which has never been established as an emergency will be over Mr Hurst noted under the town by law the police can only limit parking to two hours on Mill and Main Streets and it is pointless on Mill Street and Ihere a lol of parking spots on Main Street anyway He wanted to have the parking authority attend the next works meeting to discuss parking Acton Mr Hyde said before any by law changes are made the parking authority must be consulted and the police ad vised Consult Committee chairman Mike Armstrong said as long as the town has a parking authority it might as well be consulted and suggested they be asked to attend the nexl works meeting on December Mr Austin said he would try and have some kind of by law put together outlining the where parking should be limited to two hours
