14 The Acton Free Press Wednesday Nov 1977 GoKart track Interagency luncheon bridges town region near Ashqrove About SO people attended an Interagency luncheon at St a hall yesterday Tuesday in a bid to get to know one another The meeting chaired by Don Dlsher a social worker attached with the Mental Health team was set up so the various agency people coming into the town regularly could get to know what people are in charge of what services locally Each local group was allowed a few minutes to speak about its purpose Larry represented the Georgetown Optimists and the Big Brothers Associa He explained to the group he Big Brothers movement has been going on in Georgetown for the past five or six years but in the past three has been run by one person only He continued to say this person has moved away leading to complete disorganization Mr said concerned citizens of Acton and George town feel the organization should be expanded and a number of volunteers have set about the reorganization of it A committee has been set up Mr Ciglen said of people from all over Hills but more people are needed to get the idea off the ground He explained the funding is cur renUyby the Optimists but it is hoped by next year the group will be self supporting One of the problems in the past Mr said is that volunteers with Big Brothers have been those citizens who move into town get it going and then move away again He appealed to those who plan to stay in the community Tor a while to volunteer to help the group out Carol Clark spoke on behalf of the recreation pro grams The she said has been running since pro grams to pick up in the last few years Mrs Clark described the seven programs running this fall including preschool gym mixed volleyball etc She also spoke of the courses hoped for after Christmas Terry was on hand to tell the group of Meals on Wheals and made an appeal for volunteers either drivers or runners those who can carry the meals into the homes Mrs Grubbe explained the meals can be received one to five days a week at a nominal price The group project she says is in conjunction with the Georgetown Meals on Wheels coordinated by Nora Vikauskas Mrs Grubbe also spoke on behalf of the Legal Aid clinic now in its second week Peggie Balkind is the lay worker and mans the centre If she feels a program needs further aid she will refer him or her to the duty council comprised of local lawyers Ron Henry and Chap man Das Sydney minister of the Acton Baptist church repre sented the Acton Ministerial Association He explained it is difficult to describe and define where the church is There are people who are committed and those who are not Mr Syndey told the group the church is involved with the well being of the total man and wants to show some people then is sponsoring the Scouts The club helps the arthritis and Crippled Child campaigns as well as several on going projtcts Peter Marks added that the Rotary club is one of the est donors to the Community Service Centre Henry Stachyra repre sented the Business Improve ment Area He explained that merchants make up the group with a board of direc tors composed of six mer chants and one councillor They collect business taxes from the merchants involved he continued Mr Stachyra said there were several ways to promote the downtown business core One way is through ad vert is ing and another is through gimmicks The BIA has chosen neither of these routes he said having chosen the renovation program The group tries to make downtown a pleasant place to come he said If we get the people downtown the chants can take over from there Business Association president Alma Swetman is in complete support of the BIA Mr Stachyra concluded Recreation for the area Anne Pickering was tied up at a previous commit but town office sec Clark spoke for her Mrs Clark described the past and forthcoming recrea lion programs offered by the town and also pointed out a meeting soon at Robert Little school to
