tranquility of a peaceful countryside is suddenly broken by an unexpected bugle call of a hunting horn signalling the commencement of a fox hunt in expedition The air is filled with the cries of 17 hounds as they leap and hound through the snow sniffing and hunting for the scent of their day s game a ox Foxhunting has arrived In Halton and while it brings with it such traditions as hounds proper hunt attire organized masters Ins and similar personnel It is a fox hunting group with a difference Gathered together on this cold Sunday morning Is a group of members and tors many attired in the pinks of hunting cloth and smart black jackets Yet they are mounted not on horses but on cross country skis Deep snow a winter condl make regular hunting impossible but the weather and season do not deter this enthusiastic group from pur suing the hounds on skis The Break of Dawn Riding Club as it is presently named is yet an official and recognized hunt club at though it does have a regular schedule of Sunday hunts Started list spring the club boasts a membership of ap proximately 35 with fre quently or more guests attending the club meets There are all sorts of for young riders and pony clubs but there is no thing for adults states Steve Lister jo master of the club friends and interested individuals prompted Mr Lister and Neil Walsom mastership to organize a local hunt club But more than anything It is a family club with mem and their children hunt together said Mr Lister noting that few clubs encour age a fimlly oriented club organization While the club adheres to the traditions of fox hunting Including proper attire and hunting etiquette It is much more of a social thing ex plained Mr Lister horsemanship is certainly stressed but the group has the opportunity to get out and enjoy the scenery and the company of other individuals he con tinued In several hours of hunting you may cover acres of countryside he noted en Ihuslastically Mr I is tor farm MountainviewSUiblesis located on 17 off Highway and backs onto the Bruce Trail offering riders the best of the Following the style or a regular hunt day the presl dent or the Lindvck addresses the group and wishes them a successful hunt The sport Is and not killing stresses Mr Lister noting hit the clubs pack of hounds has yet to cap ture a fox since they began the club While the number of hounds In he clubs pack is insuffi the hounds as a working pack the masters insist an working the hounds and refuse to lay a drag scent traditionally done when there arc less than 12 couples of hounds We much prefer to have the hounds working sniffing than to have them tear dawn a field after a scent has been la Id on the ground A working pack also allows the riders to enjoy the ride HOWS THIS FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO RENT Armstrong Avenue Halton Hills 2286 or without having to give hot pur to the hounds The clubs hounds owned by Mr are maintained at his home In Durham county where they are care fully bred raised and trained to hunt with the horses In days gone by the Master owned the dogs and outfitted his start members with their proper attire that those working directly and control ling the houndshut those are days gone by states Mr Lister With this club it will be matter of the membership running and owning the club thus providing members with more direct say in matters Membership fees arc the most reasonable in the area according to Mr Lister and a single member may join tor a fee of a year Member ship fees and capping fees ore put towards the cost of maintaining the hounds The clubs pack Is estimated to cost approximately to maintain There are approximately 35 active members and contrary to popular belief that such sport clubs are reserved for the wealthy the club Is com prised of many local people including families who arc interested in a day There are natural brush and fence obstacles to keep one horse in good jumping shape but those who are somewhat apprehensive arc able to follow an alternate route with out jumping The hunt usually gathers at 10 Sunday morning and com with the traditional stirrup cup given by the host or the day hunt The stirrup cup is comprised of a small glass of sherry Following a toast to the hunt the gathering is off Depending upon the location of the days hunt riders will return their horses to their respective tables and then gather at the home of the host for the hunt breakfast The host is frequently a local farmer who will invite the club to hunt through his farm area and then return for an afternoon meal or a memberoftheclub Invitations are often ex tended by other hunt clubs and riders will meet all over the countryside meet It gives you a chance to socialize with many new people who share the same interest in horses explalt Mr Lister Children arc important members he stated and are encouraged to attend The club has several young members on Its executive who arc keen to participate in the affairs of the club he explained and this also en courages more young people in coming out Individuals uncertain about whether they will enjoy the sport can always come out with the hunt as a guest for a fee oft But we always have a great time lot of fun not just for the rid but for the big get together afterwards said Mr Lister noting his club has got to put out the best meal spreads Cold weather and deep snow arc impossible for the horses hence the organized ski trips Though many are not skiers members still don their hunt attire and strap on pair of cross country skis for the fun of it At such meets each member and guest arrives with a meal contribution be it a casserole salad or capping fee of per person goes towards maintaining the hunts pack of hounds following three or four Ottawa threat to Queen The federal govt mm en poses a serious threat to the institution of the crown cording to the leader of the newly formed branch of the Monarchist League of Canada Jaime Watt 19yearold head of he group cites as examples of monarchist reeling by the federal government such actions as replacing the Queen face on paper currency and Ottawa s new right to sign letters of recom mendation and recall for ambassadors instead of the Queen Watt claims there are about Halton residents in the League There are 10 Canadians in thn league he says are not the bust game to chtse as this hound and several others in the discovered Although the quills arc well implanted careful hand and deft ringer can pull the quills out without causing pain to the dogs hours of skiing accompanied by hounds members return to the home of the host for a banquet style afternoon hunt breakfast which can often last into the evening For the moment the club remains an unofficial hunt club despite the obvious hunt ing traditions followed in the Sunday meets but plans are underway to apply for the seal of recognition The process Is lengthy as the club must await a year probation period before receiving approval The club must prove it is capable of a regular pack of hounds as well as membership within the club Mr Lister is optimistic however and looks forward to making an applies in the spring This will include researching the rounding territory to deter mine the boundaries of neigh boring hunt clubs Care must be taken to avoid Including another club specific hunting plot of land in the application There is a great deal of time involved in the planning of such a club but according to Mr Lister it is worthwhile Members are enthusiastic and there a lot of satis fac tion derived from the weekend ride and the activities that surround it Starting out is not easy financially and the Club has organized events to raise money Including a Christmas party A pony show is now in the planning stages and will be at one of the area farms to raise money for the club in the early spring Church Services EVANGEL PENTECOSTAL TABERNACLE 33Chu chill Road North Brian Church Sunday March 1978 TUESDAY BTjIo Study WEDNESDAY MARCH8
