Jennifer Once again many students will be looking for summer employment Babysitting pro vides students with jobs during the summer and also throughout the rest of the year The Canada Safety council has compiled a pamphlet entitled Tips for Babysitters which includes many safety tips for both the parents and the babysitter Proper knowledge and quick thinking on behalf of the babysitter and responsible parents can save the lives of children and prevent acc idents Never leave children unattended Children left playing alone can get into trouble and this is where accidents happen Matches and cigerette lighters should be kept well out of the reach of children Toys can also be a cause of accidents if not checked for defective parts Even safely constructed toys can become defective as a result of constant use or misuse Check them often for loose parts sharp edges and defective wiring Portable heaters should be kept away from the play area cur la ins and furniture Dont smoke on the job Babysitters have been known to start fires from careless smoking Those students who will be babysitting all day in the summer are often faced with the responsibility of preparing meals During meal preparation the babysitter should were tight fitting clothes to avoid contact with range elements or brush pots and pans which could result in dangerous spills Pot handles should always be turned inward on the stove so children cannot tip them In the case of a pan fire always smother it with a lid Never throw water into the pan Electrical cords should always be rolled up and kept well back on the counter out of the reach of children When handling hot pots or pans or when having a hot drink put babies in the play pen so they wont be burned in case of spills Babysitters are responsible for Ihe child the knowledge of basic first aid and emergency procedures can save a life For emergency help dont hesitate to call the emergency medical police or fire depart ment numbers as supplied by the parent Call the parents for questions about lesser emergencies Always notify parents about small accidents when they return For cuts and bruises stop the bleeding by applying gentle pressure with clean cloth Wash the wound and apply a bandage If a child starts to choke let him try to cough it up If he stops breathlns turn him upside down and smack him on the back Call for medical help Treatment for children who have swallowed poisonous substances can be read on the label of the bottle Call for emergency medical help If the childs clothes catch on fire show child how to drop and roll Rolling in a blanket rug or just on the ground smothers the flames Coll for medical help Put ice or If skin is already blistered dead white brown or charred call for emergency help Advance planning by the parents and babysitter in the case of fire can save lives and avoid panic for both the children and the sitter Children should know how to gel out of the bedroom if the front and back doors are blocked by smoke or flames The sitter should make sure in advance that they know all the escape options One of the largest causes of fire deaths is smoke If in a room shut the doors to stop the smoke from advancing Stuff the door cracks with wet towels or blankets Show the children how to crawl in the smoke so they can get better air near the floor Get the children out of the house and don let anyone go back in Many people die after reaching safety and trying to return to the burning house Go to a neighbour house and call the fire department Give the complete name street and town over the phone Babysitters should be sure all doors are locked and never open them to anyone The exception may be when the parent has said a caller is expected Be brief and businesslike on the phone Any con versation may be encouragement to some one who might mean harm Dont tell callers it is the babysitter speaking or any additional information Take a message and say the parents will be back Parents should provide babysitters with the telephone numbers of the police fire and medical emergency department poison control centre and the family physician The numbers of a neighbour relative and where parents can be reached arc also necessary If an ency arises and these numbers are not readily available the babysitter should call the operator Babysitting is not a Job for anyone The sitter Is taking responsibility for other people most prized possession their children They must be interested in child mature and responsible even though they arc only students they are taking on the role of a
