CLEARANCE SALE Commercial St Discount on all goods in Auction The Acton Free Press Wednesday 1978 The Ihe Town Hall almost burned down by George As people came within sight of the Town Halt the lights were visible shining through a haze of smoke white In the corner by the fire exit bright yellow flames flickered In the windows When 1 arrived Firefighters were already on the job and entering the Town Haiti heard the sound of water pouring down Into the room behind the Council Chamber The stairways and upstairs hall were filled with smoke and a number of citizens standing around upstairs watching the proceedings By this time the stove had plunged through the floor into Jimmy room below and firemen were pouring water on the wood around the place the stove had been on the floor and walls and down the hole in the floor onto the stove below Most of the excitement was over by then and the story of the night s events was being passed along from person to person among the spectators Jimmy hod decided because of the cold that one of the stoves should be kept going all night so the hall would be warm first thing in the morning for the students He had therefore loaded some wood into the stove in the northeast corner and gone to bed But the stove burned better than he realized or perhaps he forgot to close the damper in any case It must have become so hot the wood around it ignited This wood was piled a foot or so away from the stove and the behind the stove and the floor underneath were covered with galvanized metal If this been the case the fire could have been much worse The stove must have been very hot Indeed Jimmy had been awakened by the smelt of smoke and the sound of the fire He rushed out and pulled the fire siren switch but nothing happened The siren was frozen He have a few tugs on the bell rope grabbed a pail filled It with water and raced upstairs to throw It on tho fire On the way down he pulled the rope a couple of times again filled the pail tugged the rope and raced upstairs This accounted for the intermittent clanging of the bell He kept at it running up and down stairs in his stockinged feet in the smoke until the firefighters arrived Undoubtedly his efforts helped to hold the fire back The stove eventually came down through the hall floor onto his bed so it was lucky he wakened when he did This fire ended his career as caretaker of the Halt His roam was destroyed and there was no other one In the hall so he moved elsewhere eventually becoming night watchman at Baxter Laboratories and later at Dills Printing and Publishing I have never forgotten several unrelated incidents which stick in my memory from that night I remember standing in the hallway down stairs for a few minutes where a number of men leading citizens of the town at that had gathered and were talking I remember distinctly Amos Mason and Dills Smoke floated around us there were bings and thumps coming from above and just through the Council Chamber door was the sound of cascading from the hoses through the hole on the floor It struck me as odd in all this excitement that they were AUCTION SALE WEDNESDAY EVENING MAY 31 AT CLOCK SHARP Is IN THE AGRICULTURAL HALL politics Upstairs the firemen had put a ladder through the trap door over the stage Into the attic and some had gone up for a look around Although the fire had not burned through the ceiling the attic must have been full of smoke and this was in the days before respirators bo they were a brave lot I remember Firefighter Sam coming down the ladder and reporting to the Fire Chief who strangely enough I dont remember He said Its pretty hot up there do you think I should take up a hose And I remember whether he got to take a hose up the ladder or not Jimmy wandered about watching still in his stockinged feet saying nothing his face showing no signs of the recent panic he must have felt I felt sorry for him because now he had no place to sleep however a neighbour took him In for the rest of the night The next morning I over heard one local citizen saying to Police Chief Harrop Well anyway we got a certain room cleaned out so I gathered that maybe Jim my stay In the Town Hall as caretaker was not popular with everyone Oh yet what happened to the High School At Home Friday morning before school everyone was glum What to do At nine clock Principal called a meeting of the whole school to discuss the mutter In those days there were only ninety students or so and they regularly and easily crowded Into one room of the school for Important meeting The High School then was In the old stone school now St Joseph Separate School It was decided that If everyone worked there would be time to move the dance to the building using the upstairs gym and the downstairs hall for dancing with a PA system linking the two together Jobs were assigned and by early after noon everything was in for the dance to go on as scheduled and It did with as AT HOME in the town hall in 1946 including presentation of certificates to members of the graduating class Included in the group are Bunny Anderson Stewart Ruth Masters Masales Joan Somerville Burn Ray Eleanor Ross George Elliott and Duval Phibrook tells house Canadians fed up with post office Canadians are fed up with delays and Irresponsible ac tions taken by Post Office workers MP Frank told the House of Commons last week Phllbrook was Postmaster General Gllles to sec what could be done to prevent Incidents such as one that took place at the Ottawa terminal much success as If nothing had happened As for the Town Hail indue course It was repaired The stove went back the floor was fixed and a good many dances were held before It ceased to be used In fact the next year the At Home was back In Its original location Everything returned to what It had been all Jimmy His days at the Town Hall were over unless perhaps late at night his spirit still runs up and down those stairs as he did one frosty night thirty years ego May 11 On that occasion postal workers wore badges and T shirts which carried insulting and obscene gestures towards management Phllbrook noted things such as that could cause wider disruption of postal service This is another in a series involving Inside lal workers in various parts of country It has cuastd the Canadian people lo become in tolerant of this kind of action by this pirtnular group If my is any example I would say the Canadian people have just about had enough They are fed up with this kind of irresponsible behaviour This probably represents for Inside postal workers the worst Industrial relations we have seen In this country I do not want entirely to incrim mate post office manage although we recognize there arc troubles on that side But there certainly is great concern about these postal workers It is peculiar be cause they tend to blame the post office management for all their troubles However it is TV a FURNITURE9 walnut no china cab net largo not have any trouble with the tetter carriers workers In fact I be one reason the letter carriers split off and developed their own union was because they fell they could no longer be associated with the inside workers people in my riding I think they arc fairly repre sentatlve of business they are business by and large who rely on the mailare puzzled about all this as I the rest of us are They are frustrated because we do not seem to have an answer After all we have been at this for several years They arc angry and demanding some kind of action a resolution of this problem and of course they look to the federal government for answers Why are we running into all this trouble Industrial relations Is a wide field There arc conflicts all the time twren management and labour whether in the public or the private sector But this type of behaviour by postal workers appears to be tin matched unprecedented Government and manage ment tend to be blamed The are considered to bo boring Many Jobs are very boring Mr Speaker these jobs are also very well paid Sometimes automation is blamed and at other times autocratic management But surely these difficulties could be resolved peacefully In other situations they are Workers blame the the cabinet and the various postmasters general over ihe years for lack of co operation Even the civil vants In department are blamed The workers in turn arc accused of being com anarchists rotislsandsoon This does not seem to solve the problem They propose certain solutions of their own establishment a private enterprise a Crown corporation andsoon The question now is Can we gel cooperallon by agree ment or shall we have to re sort to tough measures I believe Canadians are a reasonable people They want to treat everyone welt in eluding these Inside postal workers But they want these issues resolved soon After all this department is not a toy factory even though there are a lot of games being played It Is on service and the public wants some a risers Phllbrook said In reply Mr said there were no specific plans to prevent similar pro blems in the future but 1 the same action would be taken if It again He reviewed steps that being taken with unions MAPLE AVENUE BAPTIST CHURCH Maple Ave Georgetown Sunday 1978 m Sunday School 11 30p m ES Kerr Inter m Pallor THURSDAY Or KorrSpoaks Tho Folio wsh of Evangelical Churches In Canada Wo
