The Free Press Wednesday Sept 27 Editorial News from Neepawa So another union is holding the public to ransom with the strike of postal earners We the people who pay the carriers wages are being made to suffer inconvenience And they have arranged rotating strikes so they can stay at their jobs most of the time and collect their pay We with many people have a product that needs delivering Here s an example of what the post office provides us with when it s working well A reader from Neepawa Manitoba last week mailed us the wrappers from her copies of the Free Press We mark each wrapper with the date it is mailed The reader added the date it was received Thusly July 26 issue received August the 22nd day August 2 issue received August 9 the eighth day August issue received August the day August issue received August the ninth day August 23 issue received August 30th the eighth day September issue received September lb the fourth day The issue of August 30 had not yet arrived when the letter was written Sept 18 not usual in the past she comments That s the bad news Now for the good news The writer Margaret merman went on to say that her father Arthur M Zimmerman was years old on Sept 11 He worked many years in and around Acton as Beardmore tannery engineer and gas well drilling with Morgan Crewson He doesn t enjoy the best of health but has a won memory When not too tired he can relate many stories in detail of the past which he says were hard days but happier days He married Margaret Jane Sayers of Acton in 1908 He enjoys the Pages of the Past columns in the Free Press and noting the many changes in Acton and district Happy Mr Zimmerman whenever this paper arrives in Mountain pass meeting After the Canadian Community newspapers Association con in Vancouver in mid August we set out with 42 other newspapenng people on the Sun Princess for a marvellous week long cruise to Alaska We made three fascinating stops at Skagway Ketchikan and Sitka and spent a full day cruising in Glacier Bay where the world is still as it was in the ice ages Surrounded by glaciers and ice bergs we heard rangers who are stationed there describe the pro gress of history and the gradual reintroduction of foliage and wildlife There is one highlight we would like to share A narrow gauge railway takes people and freight daily from Skagway in Alaska to in the Yukon Passengers like our selves who join the tram through the White Pass simply as sight seers are delighted by the stupendous mountain views and amazed as we watch the perilous trail below where io many men and horses trudged miles in vain in in search of gold At one time of these men and some women camped for the Falling leaves The Children s Aid Society has written to remind people in the region that their meetings are open to the press and public The board meets monthly on the last Wed nesday at Speers Rd Oakville Revenue Canada Taxation advises taxpayers holding Canada Savings Bonds due to mature this fall that careful study of the op available when cashing and reporting bond interest could result in tax savings The two Canada Savings Bond Series are the Special Replacement Series maturing October have just been broken off and ruined A couple are on Churchill more at the Robert Little school grounds Last week cemetery stones were knocked over Before that large planters and plants were taken from por ches of homes What ism the minds of the people who do these things Who are they A Guelph woman who has fered from fluoride poisoning read winter on the bleak shores of Lake Bennett where they built rafts to float their supplies further into the Yukon Then there were stores businesses and even a newspaper Now at windy Bennett there is a very large station and a few trailers to house railway em plus the grey weathered rums of the old church Every where snowcrowned mountain peaks soar Train passengers pile out of coaches warmed by oil burners into the chilly air and hustle into the station There long tables are set up all ready with stew beans lots of bread and pie It was here so many miles from home that two weeks ago we en countered Kate from Milton and Potter from Georgetown both working happily in the station Whats the news from home they laughed when they learned we were from the Acton Milton and Georgetown papers But the train started to shuffle and we had to run As far as we could see Bennett was not the best place to be left behind the Free Press about Acton s likely addition of fluoride to the water and hastened down with a letter and literature Books she recommends are available in the Guelph library and a few folders are at our counter The possible effects of medication plus fluoride haven been adequately studied she claims Bill Smiley s column Sugar and Spice did not arrive in the mail this week Among eight million citizens in Ontario there are who speak French at home About four per cent And for that we always seem to get the French side when we set out to read the instructions on boxes Your temper is worth more than your weight in gold Keep it Watch for those flashing school bus lights Remember you cant pass in either direction With the buses on the road now its something to remember again Letters welcome ONE SPECTATOR SAID the ground shook with the approach of CN steam locomotue Saturday morning Several folks were at the site of the old CN
