The Acton Frea Press Mug reopens to folk music LET THEM EAT cake Cake and refreshments were served at the Mug opening evening High school students Sankey Ray Mueller Jay Sankey Judy Colbourne partially hidden from view and Richard Stanley enjoyed the food entertainment and themselves Youth page editorial by Jennifer Rowe Jane Stewart a well known folk singer from London Ontario opened the new season Friday night at the student operated coffee house known as the Mug Approximately students showed up in the renovated room located in the basement of the to the Mug back for its second year Although attendance seemed a little low at the beginning of the night things picked up after nine Organizers felt the Sabres hockey game which was also going on the same evening was partially rcspon for the drop in at ten dan folk sound only A lot of people think folk music is drab something their parents listen to People should learn to tolerate other kinds of music Dave Stanley commented Mug worker Linda explained that some students arc petitioning the Mug to change back to last years formal with the modern music Dave Stanley said some of the problems the Mug was faced with last year when they had both disco and en tcrtainment In the same night During the breaks of the entertainers disco music was played However when the performer came back on stage the kids started yelling and pounding on tables No courtesy was shown to the singer One problem not an ticipated by the new organizers was the Mug membership cards which were sold to students for this year Chris Conroy said last year Mug membership cards were made mandatory to attend the lost evening at the Mug Chris was told the cards would be good for this year s events also When he up at the Mug Friday his card was not honored We should get a discount or a rebate or something It a not really fair said Chris Dave Stanley explained the confusion and said that although cards were not honoured by the new Folk vs disco It seems Mug organizer are not able to practice what they preach The Mug a studentoperated student oriented coffee house reopened this past weekend under a barrage of complaints The major one was the type of music chosen Organizers have changes the format of disco and folk music to just folk music something many students are not happy with Dave Stanley vice president of the Mug is quoted this week as saying People should learn to tolerate other kinds of music If this is the ease Mr Stanley should perhaps learn to tolerate disco and other types of sound other than folk music Folk music has been around for a lot longer than Mr Stanley himself It nothing new to the music world The Mug is for students By having just folk music the organizers an shutting off a lot of teenagers who just do not prefer the soft sound Why should they be shut out just because their musical tasles differ from the organizers Is It the first step in making the Mug a place for a clique certainly not the objective of the original organizers Maybe lost years attempt at mixing disco and folk music was to do Rut surely somewhere they must be a compromise Why not one week disco one week folk That way everyone can have what enjoy A few of the mature stud might even sit through the folk music knowing disco will the next week and To the organizers of the Mug had better do jou lose half of your audience forever
