opinion 105 to 15 against fluoride in water Last weeks fluoride opinion poll totals people opposed to fluoride and IS In favor Many comments were added to the ballots which were perused with great Interest by regional council lor Pat McKenxle on Tues day The opinion poll on fluoride produced ballots this past week Due to the postal strike most of the ballots were brought to the Free Press office Since the local post office was in fact open the few ballots which were mailed locally did arrive Several people phoned in their comments because of the strike Regional councillor Pat read through the ballots Tuesday ana just wished he had heard from same of the people before I am very pleased with the res ponse he commented He would have liked to have had these opinions a couple of weeks ago when the issue arose Since some of the com concerned the iron he was happy to report that steps were being taken that very day to improve the taste appearance and smell of the water from the Fairy Lake well I am sure the new regional councillor can follow this up early in December he said results of the opinion pall by councillor says the new council should address Itself to the issue 1 agree with that councillor McKenzle said Tuesday Here the figures from the opinion poll Arc you in favor of a fluoridated water supply for Acton No 72 ballots signed by people Of these Si people wanted a vote on the subject Seven did not want a vote and seven did not tick this choice favor of fluoridated water were 12 ballots repre senting IS people who signed them Of these nine did not want a vote and she did The towns population is about Fluoride yes Fluoride no Cars collide near railroad Two cars collided near the railway crossing on Mill Street October IS morning Regional Police estimate the damage to the auto driven by Sharon Perkins Maria St to be Damage to the other car driven by Roseford Terrace is in the neighborhood of ac cording to police The Acton Free Press Wednesday Oct 26 1978 We vote our councillors into office Are we then going to ask for a plebiscite on every move Fluoridated water will benefit us all I have been surprised and extremely disappointed by the Free Press obvious at tempts to stir up contro versy Now because a couple of people urged the Free Press to publish the ballot you continue to try to incite public reaction 1 have yet to read an unemotional intelligent report explaining the benefits There are many major problems and issues in our society that need public arousal and education to address them In with fluoridated water our children had no cavities in their teeth After living in Acton far three years they now have cavities A plebiscite only if public concern warrants the cost We need some engineers to give us our money worth on our water The cost of dental care Is high Why not help reduce cavities Listen to the den lists They don really want to reduce their business but they do care about good dental health Fluoride has been in the Toronto water supply for a number of years 1 feel my children have benefitted from it while we were residents there We elect representatives to take such decisions Betty Fisher Continued from page she said She hasnt been a teacher but has been a parent volunteer with children with reading difficulties The most effective way of learning what Is happening in school she added is by rolling up your sleeves and working On the issue of declining enrolment and rising costs Fisher said It is important to understand the board re ceives provincial funding amounting to S3 per cent for the elementary panel and per cent for the secondary with the balance coming from the municipal tax levy As long as the board is below the spending ceiling of the provincial government the municipal levy wont need to be increased she said But as enrolment declines we find we have large classes which can be all via ted by moving con sultnnts and from administrative positions back into the classroom she said admitting that it would not be a popular course for the administrative staff But in economic restraint everyone has to be sensible and focus on the classroom Teachers are losing their jobs because of declining enrolment but the staff aren t she said The pupil teacher ratio PTR hoax perpetrated on the taxpayer because comprises everyone in the school except for the mop in the cupboard but is unreal istic as far as class size The board should be looking at overall class size The in elementary and 1 in secondary school And except for special education classes and technical education classes the class sizes may range over she said This has to be alleviated by bringing in administrative and support staff to reduce class sizes Wo have many teachers at the administrative level whose time could be better spent In the classroom with the children The Basics Fisher said she makes it a point not to refer to core curriculum because core curriculum includes every thing but the kitchen sink and does not necessarily mean learning basics such as reading writing spelling grammar oral lea Hon and simple math ematics Ourschoolsare constantly confronted with remedial programs because our children are being passed from grade to grade with many who have not com pleted their years work This Is very cruel to the child be cause at some stage he must learn these skills and he may find when he gets to grade six or seven he is put into a remedial program to learn the basics he should have quired three or four years be fore Remedial programs put strain on the child and stress on the educational system she said As well remedial programs take extra dollars and extra teaching staff If there are children who arc not going to achieve even a medium standard we should accept that and provide the type of education that they rightfully deserve For the child who is ex tremely bright she added we must also make sure we challenge them o heir fullest capabilities This takes top flight programs and teachers of the highest calibre Twinning The twinning of schools is upsetting to the community and there are many ways In which the board can save money without twinning schools she said Busing Busing is the most horrendous obstacle we have in the system Fisher said Many children are on buses an hour longer than they have to be They fought their onto the bus they fought for seating position they fight to get off the bui and by the time they are in school they re cither totally exhausted or extremely hyper This doesn t enhance their work level and makes it diffl cult for their teachers at the beginning of the day to settle them down Children are un able to participate in after school activities because they must meet the bus schedule to take them home Some start the school day as early as eight and do not get back home until five Fisher said she is also con about the community use of schools by such groups as Scouts Brownies and Guides The board policy Is that such groups must pay for using the schools in off hours and they simply can afford to pay the fee Fisher said that her five year involvement in the school system covers re searching new programs implemented by the board attending board meetings and other meetings throughout Halton where education Is discussed and attending seminars at Ontario Institute far Studies in Ed ucatlon She was also directly in in the health curriculum committee and set up guidelines for health care program for K to eight She also has attended meetings of different schools systems in Halton I am virtually dedicated to learning about all the educationol structures and how we con better our kids Renaissance Fisher said she was a member of Renaissance a parent group founded by Rev Ken Camp bell that advocates a Chnstian style of teaching Her membership was for a three month period about four years ago she said adding that she no longer is a member of or any other organized parental group Fisher is a member of the Hills Library Board and is the board of education appointee to the board She said she will not drop her association with the library board because she has made a three year commitment to serve there There is no con flict of interest with the board of education on the matter be cause the board does not fund the library Nor docs she plan to drop her affiliation with the Hills Arts Council Fisher said that one of the reasons she Is running is that the concerns of taxpayers In wards one and two are not competently handled at the board of education fisher said that when she found out there was another candidate up against Id already plunged deep into a campaign and could not back out If I could back out I would With Pamela Sheldon of Speyside also in the race to unseat the incumbent Fisher admitted there was a real possibility the vote could be split 1 hope not I am opposed to all chemicals added to our 1 would like something added to the water to take the iron out There ore already too many chemicals in what we con sume The presence of iron In the water supply is a worry the less chemicals we use the better Glad to see the paper has brought this vote out as I feel most Actonlans are apa Ihetlc The iron has ruined our drinking water and stains sinks and tubs How many of the dentists live In town Do they put fluoride In their wells Who needs extra fluoride when you can get it in tooth paste or at the dentists It a disgrace to force this onto everybody Better teach proper diet I definitely do not want sodium silicate added to our drinking water Bring our water from Toronto for our tea Other sources of fluoride are available that are a matter of choice Many thanks for the op portunity The water from the well by the lake is not fit for human use It both tastes and smells like on old frog pond Please use the good water from the line well I believe fluoride in the body It is not essential after permanent teeth formation Concentrate on the iron content We used to have such Fair change Fergus Agricultural Society is going to investigate becoming a Class fair The 143yearold fair Is now Class The Fergus fair qualified for the new status when they awarded more than in prize money Acton recently made the same switch Traffic signs knocked down A routine patrol by police revealed four traffic signs on the Second Line were knocked down good water I can get all the fluoride I want from Crest toothpaste Regional government has no right to push something we don t wont down our throats We need a vote It Is unfair and unthinkable that the council would add chemicals to our good water without consulting the paying public I was surprised that Acton did not start the opinion poll before this We like to think Acton water hod a part in us locating here One more decision made without consulting anyone Adding fluoride to public water should be decided by knowledgeable people such as not pollli clans A couple from concerned people carry pure water in a bottle to dated areas and cannot risk If there is the slightest chance that one person may be harmed by the addition of fluoride to the water we must rebel against it NOTICE
