Power profit at roots of many humanitarian acts Ten days for World Development happens on 2 to this year Wist do I care about world development when I cant even meet my mortgage payments you ask Unfortunately we all have to care about world development or well all be out on our collective But were doing all we can you say Our country seals food technology and machine aid to developed countries North Americans tend to be very smug about that act However according to the Ten Days information booklets this Isnt doing the job All our assistance Is making the problem of self sufficiency much worse Western seducers The many educated authors of Ten Days In formation and several books on the subject believe is the key to all world survival Not economic survival of major corporations but individual survival for every person no matter where he lives whats happened to our own country Could you survive on your own Could you grow enough food on your own land to feed yourself and you family No you couldnt And do you know why not Because the land is TOO EXPENSIVE In order to purchase a small plot a few acres enough to grow crops little meat for yourself youd have tohjiveawhackinggreatmortgage In order topay for that mortgage you would need cash A Job is necessary to provide that cash and then you dont food which means need more money which means a better Job and longer hours which means and so on and infinitum This is whats happening in undeveloped coun tries We the affluent you glad youre affluent rich arc providing them with technology to create highly productive factory farms We purchase their exports in return for sending them symbols of our society appliances machines televisions We are creating the need for these things The poor countries encourage buying up of land to develop corporation farms such as the sugar plantations The peasant farmer finds his land engulfed and he goes to work for the plantation Unfortunately hes poorer than before because he doesnt have enough money to feed his family or to buy the new expensive land to grow food Besides hes being seduced by the trappings of western civilization and he wants some of them he becomes discontent as well as undernourished Sound familiar We can help It isnt you or I causing this but it is the huge profit seeking companies we support Power and profit create the root of some of these socalled humanitarian acts The rich get richer and the poor get poorer And its got to slop before the whole world tilts from Imbalance What can as individuals The first is to become aware Attend the various Ten Day events happening in our town Comfort will tell you what and where if you havent been reading the paper Next is to try to become more selfsufficient In yourself Quit giving all your dollars to super markets and oil companies The more money they make the more they grow and the more they require it insidious Look into cooperative food buying save fuel and gas by using wood burning stoves and bicycles or economy ears stop gathering expensive pliances recreation aids and totally unnecessary frivolities Not only will you save money but every drop in the bucket helps If consumer attitudes change so will that of the large companies the very com panies who arc stretching their tenticles to the Third World to bring the poor a better life one likeyouandlhave The quality of life for everyone wont become better until each country and individual utilizes their own potajftlal to become totally selfsufficient Only then will all the world be equal Pulse fails to register Lavenders opinion the 80s will be a very troublesome decade He Illustrated his fears telling tivstees of a speech he is writing Voyage across the 60s the voyage of the Titanic Special testing of dents evaluating two- teachers in each school improvements for spec I education and introducing core objec tives are some of the goals act by the board for the next two years The administration ran Into trouble getting trustees to adopt a scheme for a long term plan longterm plan like the objectives and alms was grouped on the agenda for a decision However board chair man Bill Herd reduced the organization for developing a longterm plan to an Information item Trustees steered the administration towards a brief planning process Instead of the possible two years In Lavenders page three ways to a long term plan Trustees Elsie and Noel Cooper Burlington indicated they wanted the staff to prepare recommendations for some trustees and later the two groups would present proposals to the full board The admini stration will return with a fourth way next week If the board wants a fast plan Mrs Hllsons way would do it said the director Cooper said the process under the three ways out lined by the would be too long to be effective One of the proposals called for man hours he said Other trustees were in favor of the longer planning process but wanted more from the plan Itself Cam Jackson Burlington said he wanted the plan to do more than react to 1980s The problem is the size of the iceberg the provincial government puts in front of us Jackson said Merits of public par ticipation in the board planning found favor with some trustees such as Acton and Betty Fisher who drew upon her own experience as a citizen member of committees Perhaps we can help prepare the people on the commit tees she said I d be afraid of public participation George town trustee Barry Shepherd said Those who come to committee may have an axe to grind Its our job and we also have the results of the parent surveys to draw upon said Shepherd As trustee for Words one and two Hills I believe it is important for me from time to time to inform my why I make certain decisions at the Board of Education table For instance as reported by the press I voted in favour of accept ing the settlement negoti ated by our salary committee with the The main thrust the settlement that per suaded me was the of teachers for remedial purposes We do have students who arc in dire need of remedial assistance and wo must address ourselves to that need I believe this is one of many positive steps we can take I shall monitor the effect of these teachers though to en sure the taxpayer is getting their money s worth The per cent increase in pay was fair and is in line with other board settlements Teachers like everyone else must be able to live in a world of increasing and per cent is not an increase It could be that in the future per cent may be extremely high and the Board is going to have to rethink their position on salary guides We saved ourselves approximately for the calendar year 1979 by reducing the professional development fund to Although I do not favour including dental plans In our negotiations the teachers were adamant about the inclusion of this benefit We settled on a lesser costing plan and agreed pay per cent of the cost 1 guess you could call this a saw off Our negotiating teams worked strenuously for 12 months on this settle ment and I commend them for their efforts Thesettlement was fair one If we did not favour ably vote for this settle ment could be facing Strike or lock out followed by arbitration Unless absolutely necessary I would not favour strike or lock out This would be denying their right to an education and the tax payers would still be paying the cost Arbitration merely lets someone mHke a decision far you This is abdicat ing your responsibility as trustee to make the best decision for the taxpayer As a member of this years salary committee I shall be starting into negotiations shortly This is going to be a tough year We are under severe monetary restraint and are in the initial stages of declining enrollment We must address ourselves to these problems with energy and imagination Teachers must realize the tax dollar is not a bottomless pit and their jobs are not going to bo secure Trustees on the other hand must not in any way short change our children It is a tightrope but we have the talent to cope with it If any taxpayer would like to reach me regard negotiations or other concerns please call anytime at or write to 394 Blvd
