Kruk steals spotlight in Sabres 83 win Sabres rookie Steve Kruk the spotlight Community Centre Saturday night as he completed his first game leading Acton to their fir si win of ihe an victory over he Thorn- hill In the week the Sabres played hockey losing 102 the Brampton Chevys The pressure was on the Sabres first year before the two teams took to the ice for the confrontation Sabres number one net minder Rob was Involved In a car accident en route to the arena The mishap left alone with no back up and unsure of his abil ities In Junior B com He hod played ten Now I know what is meant when some people say that the Montreal Canadiens are in a league by them selves It isn t just on the hockey rink I was in Montreal on October with a trip organized by Acton Travel and although I am not a Montreal Canadien fan I respect how well their organization is run One member of our group Ron bad a special invitation to meet Jean game night Ron and I figured that he would say hello maybe give him an autographed team picture or something and send him on his way I learned in a hurry that the treat hockey team just operate like that Ron visited the dressing room received mementos of the trip and was ushered to his seat by a mem of the Forum on request of Beliveau The dealing between Ron and the Canadiens was entirely first class I must say I was impressed with the organization not to mention their hockey club The Montreal Expos were a con tender for the baseball crown this sea son but they don bat as well as the Canadiens do The most impressive thing about the way the Montreal Canadiens played hockey was the way they picked up passes out of midair All night long the would fire rink wide passes at belt level and very dom was it that the receiving players couldn knock it down with their sticks Again impressed The trip was a good time for all involved Forty four people started out from Acton and we picked three more up Cornwall Former Acton resident Bill hitch hiked from Perth to Cornwall to catch the bus while a Cornwall resident Berme Razzy and his wife friends of Larry and Pat Taillefer also joined the trip played a lot of lacrosse at one time and apparently met up with Punch The two I am told had a disagreement but straightened things out in a hurry It just so happened that the weekend we were Montreal the Toronto were at Olympic Stadium to play the Alouettes The game was not the best but Olympic Stadium was more than worth the price of admission There is no way to describe the building You have to see it to believe it You could be sitting in the worst possible seat in the million dollar cement masterpiece and still have as good a view as the guy sitting down in the lower tiers In all it was a good weekend for the majority of the crew on board For anti Montreal fans it was a weekend where both the Alouettes and the Canadiens turned up winners The Als came from behind to defeat the sinking while the Habs handled the New York Rangers 54 There were two special present at the Acton Industrial Fastball League banquet and dance on Satur day night One of the team captains of the past season Darryl is moving out west and was presented with a ball autographed by all members of his championship Van Welding team and the other team captains To Darryl and his family the best of luck and may he never strike out again unless he moves back to the area The other presentation was to lly Cleaner pitcher Chuck Peavoy was not in attendance but his team members gave him a special tro phy for his work over the season The award resembled a donkey s back end and was inscribed simply To Chuck Peavoy from Family Cleaners minutes prior lo the Saturday night contest Neither Bremner or Sabre forward Ned Anderson were seriously hurt in the car accident although Anderson may be out of the lineup for two to four weeks recovering from cuts and bruises Goaltender skated with the team at practice on Mon day but a badly bruised knee should keep him of the net for at least a week was Glenn Murray who paced the Acton win over the as he picked up a five point night on three goals and a pair of assists After a scoreless first period Ihe Sabres things rolling early In the second stanza as Barry found the net from Brad Buchanan and Sean Doyle The Sabres fired second goal within a minute of the start of the period as Murray con nected from Pat Fung and Jamie Vlckery got one back a snort time later but was Glenn Murray who kept Ihe Sabres going The high scoring defenceman netted his second tally from Jamie Vickery lo reinstate the locals Iwo goal margin and then added his third straight from and Barry Trood before the were able to the score sheet again with only 1 remaining in the frame The Sabres were not happy taking a two goal lead to the dressing room and it was Roy who added the Sabres fifth second period mar from Murray and Pat Fung only seconds after the tally The Sabres added lo Iheir lead in Ihe third period picking up goals from Miller and Lance Dexter before Thornhill added final goal with only 3 remaining Barry Trood and John assisted on the Miller goal while Denis and Duffy helped on Dexter The Sabres final goal came with less than three minutes remaining as Pal Fung found the range from Murray and Jamie Coach Fred Buchanan was pleased with the per formance of his defence In the contest In absence the defense realized they had lo get out said Buchanan They moved quickly Buchanan had praise for Kruk Glenn Murray Pal Fung and Bob Allsop following the win Allsop played his best game of the year said Buchanan According lo Buchanan rode the pine the last half of the Brampton confrontation and a long talk before the Thornhill match seemed to produce good results Kruk stopped Thorn shots in the game while Acton fired Thornhill Sieve The Brampton game was a rough house match for ihe Sabres the league second least penalized team heading into the game A total of four major penalties were called In the contest close to the number the Sabres had picked up In their first nine matches The Sabres played it close for the first two periods in Brampton but the Ihird period was one coach Buchanan and his learn would probably like lo forget about fired six unanswered goals in the period In eluding two efforts as they turned a close contest into a walk away The Sabres fell behind early in the game but Nell Anderson closed the gap with only nine sec onds remaining In the opening frame from Pat Fung and Bob Allsop Brampton came back wilh a pair of tallies in the early half of the mid dle stanza before Pal Fung s solo shorlhanded effort gave the locals new life It was as close as they came before the six goal barage They slunk said Buchanan Every body forgot about checking and passing They looked worse than a good pec- wee learn The Sabres added 52 minutes lo their penally total in the game while Brampton was handed Buchanan Is awaiting the return match with the Chevys the community Centre Saturday 30 m He
