Ashgrove for a long time We have other members who have come to this district more recently and join ed with us We welcome newcomers to our area who wish to become acquainted in the neigh and share In secretary is Mrs John Ballinafad A Women a Institute was organized in in the old Grange Hall on 31st of January and banded In because of lack of membership In October 1952 the women of the com tin gathered In the Temperance Hall and decided to reorganize the Women Institute One of the first big pro jects undertaken was to try to raise money to get a new Community Hall started Money was raised In various ways Mr and Mrs Snow built a portable booth so we could cater to fairs and he Steam Era in Milton Our meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month in member homes January February March and April are afternoon meetings and the rest of the year arc evening meetings July and August are holiday months We have mem from lino on the west to the line on the east and from Pea cock side road to just below tho townline with one member In Acton We have a Tweeds mecr History book and have current events of local interest to preserve history and events for future reference Community and supplied the leaders We recognize our girls achievements v In a gift when they achieve Provincial and Advanced Honours We try to remember our sick and shut ins at Christmas time with gifts and at other limes cards We chose as our Centennial project in lo If we could help the Trustees of Providence Burying Grounds on line corner to restore the cemetery After many meetings with the trustees and township council and much hard work this was finally achieved We erected a bronze plaque on the original gates We in stigated the tlons and contacted the Provincial Government and the Historical Board about having the government erect a plaque designating corner as a historical site in 1970 We then worked with he Cemetery board and in 1972 erected a cairn with a bronze plaque to the first pioneer accomodate people on the third Thursday of each month and although we usually have plenty of business there is always time for a cup of ten and a chat wc make the time One tht things about our Institute branch is he compatibility of our age range both Charter members and Juniors work and laugh toge ther There is a very special relationship between the young and not soyoung Wc have various money making projects every year Most frequently we cater to weddings receptions and banquets Wc have 80th Ann Pago 3 booths at auctions Why in 1974 we took on the task of supplying fresh baked pies tarts and cupcakes every morning for days for tho International Plowing Match Our ovens didn cool off for a week For that ular project we gathered recipes from our members published them in a Cook Book and sold them to visitors Ever since then these books have been a continuing source of revenue and a pop ular Item for purchase Wc also organized the sale of WI Member signs for our District One of our future alms Is to attract new members to our genial group involve more young women in our Com munity Our funds are donated annually to various worthwhile community endeavours This year alone the International Year for the Physically Disabled our branch has donated to date to ACTrVAN and Friends in Deed a social group or adults who are physically disabled Along with oil other District
