Sabre Lei Williams looks on helplessly Blades Peter skate through the goal crease to score dumped Sabre in the Acton club home open Friday night A deja vu view from Sabre cellar by Dave Dor ken It seems like only last week Acton s Sabres crawl from out of the dark damp corners of the OHA Jr cellar broke their 5 record and finally strung together a dozen wins In a row to battle Burlington Cougars In the quarter final playoffs Back then Sabres were almost invincible led by the scoring prowess of Glen Motor Murray and the strong power play of Pat Fung and Barry Trood The Motor Fung Trood and another three Sabres are all gone old men In a league or boys All that re mains of the club is the staunch defensive corps of old and the troubled mentor Jules Russian As a coach of Sabres these past two seasons has always been troubled Last year In his first full season with Sabres Russian had to at tempt to mold a group of hapless hockey players In to a winning combination he cosily succeeded This year Russian feels he in even better shape than last year at this time The Sabres may be lack ing names like Murray and Fung but It has a more even mix of talent He t even overly concerned that to date the club record Is Identical to that of last fall In their season opener Thursday night Sabres once again faced those Burlington foes This year they were humbled Friday night was the same story as the club failed to entertain the few hundred bodies in attendance at the Acton Community Ccn Ire as Sabres dropped a game to Oakville Blades Russian was undoublably concerned with the club poor play and dozens of bad penalties during the game but think the showing will have any effect on It a play this season The coach has experience in pulling off magic tr with hockey clubs last year his crew went ve games without a win before they finally started to play a little better hockey You can t be too critical of them the fact wc haven t had enough icelime and no exhibition games hurt but using Wo Justdidn t piny well Russian TwopcrlodsThursdaywereprettygood day was just a disaster Not huvlng enough ice- lime didnt matter no team can look that bad head d Looking back on the dismal Sabres showing not hard to tell why the club faired so poorly In both games the club took far too many penalties had own end Even the solid of ex Brampton A net minder Les Will foil the onslaught Oakville Sabres a massive 17 only a brick wall could stop hat many shots I thought Lcs played well except for a couple of goals In the Thursday game is going to get a lot It It wasn for the scores could have been more Russian The coach wasn really pleased with the play of any of his other players but Is I preparing to change the roster or make any major line changes for a while yet He is look at a right winger from Acton John Rockwell It was the rook who were for most Continued on pagcB2 One for the money Sabres Mark Duval blasts the puck post the Oakville to at tally
