bright students but for all who can handle the environ about int created parents learned Monday evening at Rob ert Little School The parents were on hand to hear Peter Spcn one of the French consultants for the Hal ton Board of Education tell them about the pro gram which is now in its first year in There are two entry points into the program In Ha I ton he explained grade one and grade six Spencer explained the local board does not of the program In kindergarten because officials feel the child has enough new exp eriences to cope with without having to hear a foreign language every day Also he said for many students In Hal ton English Is a second language and the board gives the kindergarten students a year to get used lo the English all around them It is again offered at Ihe grade six level for those whose parents fell the child could not cope with at the lower grade who now need a lenge Halloa has chosen the SO ratio for classes in both English and In grade one the early program grades one to five subjects taught in English are art English language and math In French students learn French environmental studies music and physical and health education In the senior portion of the program English art industrial arts family studies music science and physical health education arc in English In French arc Math French and Social Science Spencer pointed out more programs are taught In English in the later grades because the courses are taught by specialists who do not necessarily know the French language Once in high school students may continue to take the French Immersion in such sub jects as Canadian stud ics geography and his tory There art currently students in the French Immersion grade 1 class at Robert Little the only such class in Acton However Spencer said if enough parents are interested to form another grade It can be done Transportation to the special classes is up to the parents Spencer explained if a child went lo kindergarten Robert Little and was a bus he or she would continue to be bused to school for grade one However a child previously attending M Bennett would not be bused to Robert Little French Immersion teachers must go through a series of schooling and Interviews before even being con side red to teach In a Hal ton School Spencer noted they must first achieve Ihelr teachers certificate then a French teaching cer tificate and then go through several French language interviews by the board to assure their proficiency in the language Students in the program must really want to be there and must have good attend harder lo catch up after missing some school Spencer stressed a child in his first year of French Immersion not be put into any extra for the first lime either He explained the student will be using all his or her concentration and energies in learning the French and will have no energy to be taking figure skating or piano lessons Parents at Monday s meeting were concerned with the high pupil teacher ratio as com pared to a regular class In French Immersion Spencer had pointed out It was 1 while in the regular the was only about He explained the ratio is high because child may drop out and they still need enough in the class in order to have one While grade one will always be a separate class if necessary grades two and three or three and four may be combined In order to have enough students to keep the program going The board is taking into consideration the lower kindergarten registrat ion his year and will ad just their rotio accord ingly Registration Is taken on a first come first served basis Priority is not given to residents of Acton or students of Robert Utile School noted dates and even times arc written on the forms to ensure the people to reg ister are the first choice Parents also had a chance lo speak in formally with Robert Lillle program teacher Peggy Corner Local CNIB campaign Vic hands over cheque for to Don Ferguson District who will see that the monies raised ally arc spent locnll The raised In a door to door campaign last mouth Town hall study Continued from page 1 site Restoration of the building to Its original condition does not seem practical The cost- would be astronomical and us Indicated in Ihe previous paragraph Hie mood or appearance of the original building cannot likely be restored due to the renovations already made on Ihe Interior and due to the small lot and the abutting fire hall Again the costs would be pro hibitive We would further point out that demolition of the town hall would provide for construction of some now structure which may be comple mentary to the existing Fire hall and second floor assembly hall and con Car storage at Queen St Hills bylaw enforcement officer John Lusty has been asked to look Into a car storage problem on Queen St Acton resident Friday a councillors drop- In to complain about cars being stored and re st ruction of something to replace the town hall is almost required since the side of the fire nail now adjacent lo the town hall may look somewhat odd problem home paired a home on Queen St The resident said as many as five vehicles this homo sometimes and suggested that Is a zoning bylaw violation Councillors agreed and referred ihe matter to town staff for Invest igation
