I AHS students are Optimists Youths and Jay Hitching arc the recipients of the fourth annual Optimist Youth Appreciation Award The two Acton high school students received the award at the Acton clubs regular meeting last Tuesday evening at Acton Restaurant The award Is presented by various Optimist clubs on an annual basis honoring a boy and girl student at the local secondary school for scholastic and community achievements Last years winners were Smith and Ron and Jay both said they were surprised and honored to be bestowed the award and are very grateful to the Optimist The with Jay Hitching Youth Citations 1 jsl Tuesday evening the potential recipients totally una his clubs regular meeting their consideration for the award David Hall of the local club explained that the club chairman selects a com which draws up the guidelines for the search The guidelines are approved by the board of directors before the school is contacted Once the school is notified the principal in Actons case Betty Moore conducts her own search and presents several can dldatestotheClub The club he said then goes through a process of elimination and two names are chosen The principal is presented the winning names for her approval a 16yearold grade student is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Bruce Brilllngcr Park Ave She teaches swimming at the Acton Indoor Pool and is involved In synchronized swimming Her swimming carries over into her school activities as Renata competes on the school swim team She Is also in the Outreach Peer Counselling group and the school band Her marks she admits arent bad hopes to Jain the Total Immersion course next yeur before heading out to University At old however she is not decided whether to enter the teaching field or become a social worker Her favorite hobby swimming of course Eighteen yearold Jay is a grade student As a 1 Moffott resident he lives on the boundary line of three dif ferent school areas Had he lived across the road or I the drowning death of Derek Jones last month will be held on December An Inquest was ordered by coroner Dr Macintosh a few days after the tragic accident but the date wnsn set until last week The inquest will be held at the council chambers of the Halton Hills administra tion building on Trafalgar beginning at Threeyearold Derek drowned on October in a pond on the Campbell property on Highway Canada Batter Blood lead levels drop significantly There has been a significant drop in workers blood lead levels between tests September and October at Canada Battery Company spokesman George Tichbourne said iri an interview this week that tests showed lead blood levels definitely improved in October and over all the levels are down to the August levels After three straight months of high lead blood levels were still in the high range for a few employees he ex plained this was due to sloppy work habits by the individual workers They were retested and their results will be back soon However there was an overall blood lead levels reduction through the plant Throughout the year Canada Battery has been making improvements in health and safety equip ment as well is worker education of lead dangers Since the September results there have been fur ther improvements to the plant ventilation system and re Instruction in hygiene programs Another ex ample of constant upgrading for
