those legs as did many years marching with the pipes Kirk resident is a world class champion highland dancer and has played the bagpipes for a variety of highland bands As a teenager Kirk travelled three times to Scotland each time winning impressive awards He won the Scottish Boys Championship an award that had never before left the country the British Overseas Championship at the burgh Festival and third place In the World Championships Currently Kirk is teaching highland dancing at the Gueiph School of Dance and studying for his teaching certificate in order to teach high school science and industrial arts lib wife Celeste is an enthusiastic spectator of highland events and daughter is already following daddy dancing shoes Highland dancing is as rigorous as most pic sports it seems Kirk says he danced two hours a day fir six months and jogged and swam to keep his stamina up When competition was close Kirk would step up his dancing hours to in elude most of the day I was in really he grins He d have lo be Highland dances arc really tests of athletic ability Each competition re quires five or six different dances lasting three to five minutes each At the Edinburgh t estiva Is Kirk was required to dance up to 10 times a day for a week which did not Include many hours of practice in between each performance It Just too much work says Kirk explain ing why he no longer competes Kirk grew up in Milton and says he owes his success to Milton teacher Molly McGregor who went with him to Scotland for each of tho major competitions His teacher had a house in Scot land so he was able to spend several weeks visiting and exploring the country On his last trip for the world championships at age Kirk rented a car and travelled through England and Ireland With three Scottish grandparents and one English one Kirk Interest in he British Isles Is well founded A second generation Canadian Kirk started dancing at age His father Harvey Brush played the bagpipes with the Highlanders and is now Sergeant of the Lome Scots Pipe Band in Hal ton As a boy Kirk found himself making the cuit every year from May to Labour Day weekend competing in Highland Games all over Ontario and the Maritimes He never had any problems with his friends concerning his Interest in dancing All my friends appreciated it and admired highland dancing of course 1 won lots of medals and trophies so It helped he adds Now more of a piper than a dancer Kirk plays with the General Motors Pipe Band The band is experimenting with different slants and a vane ty of mclhodsof arranging and reels Prior lo Joining the General Motors Band Kirk played with the City of Toronto Pipe Band until it disbanded in Highland dancing and pipe bands are very popular In Southern Ontario says Kirk who sample bylaw to cover parking for the disabled Tor Onlario municipalities but some of their plan don t go far enough according to Acton s regional council lor Dave Whiting The region got Involved in special parking spaces for the disabled early in the fall when Acton businessman Lome Doberlhien wrote calling for disabled parking facilities at recreation and shop ping centre in Ontario The region backed request lo Queen Park and Whiting reports they heard back from Provincial Secretary for Social Develop ment Margaret Birch saying the province is work ing on a sample bylaw for municipalities to follow However Ihe province including anything in the bylaw covering a tag system to a vehicle Is operated by or transports a disabled person The province has backed away from a sign or tag system fearing it would the disabled Whiting says this Is ridiculous and plans raise the issue region hoping a letter will be sent suggesting those among the disabled who I mind having a tag or sign on their
