Hills Fire Chief Mick Holmes was feted at a dinner and dance at Acton Legion Firefighters in Acton Georgetown sponsored the event which was at tended by people from all walks of life Holmes retires this week handing In his pager on July marking service which started with the Acton brigade as a volunteer firefighter in Friday night the quiet and efficient firefighter was honored by his peers the Province the Town and a variety of people who came to honor him Presentations and accolades were accorded by MPP Julian Reed Mayor Peter Harold Townsley of the Acton Firefighters Association Andy Murphy of the Georgetown Firefighters Association former Acton mayor John Goy Bern Van Fleet of the Acton Firefighters former Acton chief Jack Newton from Toronto Deputy chief Bob Hyde and Dave Whiting from the Acton Chamber of Commerce MPP Julian Reed told the large throng that all of the people La Halton Hills owed Mick Holmes a debt of gratitude since we all benefitted from his dedic Holmes succeeded Ken as fire chief when the former Georgetown chief left Reed presented a scroll from the Ontario government Mayor Pomeroy said Chief Holmes had done a great deal to blend the community of Halton Hills together and he paid tribute to his dedication and quiet efficiency Harold presented the retiring chief with a life membership in tbe Acton Firefighters Association and a plaque honoring tus years of service Georgetown firefighter Andy Murphy Joshed the IchM with licences of his early days on the job and presented hint with a leather jacket worn by Georgetown they shared some of them sad Acton Chamber of Commerce president Dave Whiting presented the retiring chief with a pin and noted there would be a plaque from the Chamber at another night inGeorgetown Bern Van Fleet and former Acton chief Jack New ton both wished the chief best wishes on his retire ment and expressed the thanks of the community Mick Holmes in his response to the many words of praise recalled when he was first appointed chief of Halton Hills and the acceptance he found in both communities although the rivalry between tbe two communities was often expressed in jest Holmes said there were times when he was asked to Join other organizations but he felt his time should be spent with the two things he believed In deeply- the Royal Canadian Legion and the fire department I felt I couldn t do Justice to other organizations he said noting he still belonged to the Legion He also paid tribute to the fellowship in brigade and said he would miss the people be met dally on tbe streets of the help he received from tbe police forces and last but not least tbe of firefighters who when their husbands are fighting fires Sometimes he acknowledged hours spent at the ire hall wcren
