still capable of responding to the wishes and needs of Canadians on oc casion The announcement of the re instatement of leather footwear in the global import quota is news to cheer about here in Acton The woeful economic state of the nation as well as the lifting of the quotas were devastating for Beardmore and thus nun dreds of families Acton The possibility that the quotas be reinstated hung over the community like a menacing black cloud for over atx months The long Liberal delay in making an announce ment on the result of their deliberations of repeated calls to bring the quotas back was indeed unsettling for not just Beardmore and its employees but also our entire business community It had begun to look like the bit of black humor circulating around town that the last person out of Acton should turn out the lights might actually come true Reinstatement alone likely won t put all workers laidoff or on a shorter work week at Beardmore back on the job General economic improve ment is also desperately needed But bringing back the quotas is certainly going to help But there is an even more important lesson to be learned from the feds decision Responsible well considered and researched arguments and industrious lobbying can still work The efforts by leather and shoe manufacturers workers and Tory MPs like Otto weren t wasted The campaign was well orchestrated Letters post cards meetings with cabinet ministers the peaceful protest march on Parliament Hill etc all got the message across to the government in a highly responsible manner The shoe and leather in dustnes need more time to modernize and become more competitive with overseas makers they didn want a government handout the workers wanted to work Acton merchants wanted and desperately needed the govern ment to help out our leading in dustry It was a strong argument In short everyone involved did a great job And it clearly shows when business and labor work together when they have a logical case and are organized in their approach to govern ment they can get action albeit slowly Everyone can learn from this exercise An election is a long way off and the need for positive action on numerous economic fronts by Ottawa is unquestionable So what is needed is less public apathy and a lot more howling as well as many many more well organized and thoughtful protests Public pressure for change by governments can and will work many cases Clergy Comment by Jean Stairs For moat of us it is that time of year when we prop up our swollen feet on a lawnchalr count the days until our vacation rolls around gaze enviously at he next door neighbor a packing up to leave or dream wistfully of the time when a holiday might be within the realm or possibility When sum merUme lands on our doorstep we all begin to crave those lazy hazy crazy days of irresponsibility freed om and the absence of work The Bible talks about vacation times holidays and periods of re creation One scriptural reference is found In connection wilh the weekly observance of a day of rest The Sabbath as it was originally designed and intended was not meant to be a mini vacation It Is true that no work but this was essentially to underline the real purpose of the day It was an occasion for the recreating of soul Into the likeness of God through worship and the engagement In spiritual reflection It was to be a time when worshippers could refresh and renew the inner source of their life through quiet communion with God Other scriptural references peak of times of simple holiday Notably many of the feasts and festivals of the Old Testament were occasions for cessation of work and the simple enjoyment of relaxation This was re creation of the whole person allowing time for physical as well as spiritual refreshment and enjoyment Today recreation is more common and widespread than it ever was in Bible times- Shorter work weeks longer vacation periods long week ends and the general convenience of being able to get away for a while mean more occasions for recreation for us all Certainly a time of recreation is something for which ought to be given Without it no doubt we would function less effectively and would be shallower narrower per sons But recreation is only creative and helpful when It is seen and en joyed in Its proper perspective We can enjoy the opportunities we have at various times of the year by doing one simple thing If we break the word recreation into the parts of Its original meaning we come up with recreation If our activities reflect the biblical concepts of spiritual renewal and physical refreshment then they are doing for us what they ought to do Take the opportunity to recreate yourself both inwardly and outwardly that you might be more ably prepared to play the game properly I just want to have a good time The nine iron call a Scooper because it scoops the ball In the air J and on the fair way I never stray from my three and five irons Woods both the club kind and the tree kind intimidate me and I have a hard time keeping my head down With all this going against me it is possible to believe I actually got a birdie on trie second hole at Acton Meadows Frl day night For non golfers a birdie la one I teed off and It actually landed on the green several yards from theholeorisitcup My putting is as bad as my chipping so I figured I would be lucky and get that hole in four or five Glen Abbey here I come I sunk the ball in one long put Trying to act cool and nonchalant I approached the third hole I have never gotten under l2on this particular hole and average 15 shots You can understand my pride when I walloped an eight on it Of course the fourth hole I completely blew counting four before I got four feet from the tec The fifth hole was just as bad but Ihe sixth hole showed definite im By the seventh hole I was at least back in he single figures Entering ihe eighth tee I felt good I had the some feeling In my arms as did when entering the second hole I figured out my downfall an Ihe other holes and was del crmined to show Gord the second hole was no fluke Naturally I was the last to tee off so everyone was watching me You can im my surprise when I walloped the ball and watched It soar in the air only to come down not only on the green but it hit the pin Forget cool and nonchalant Even had never hit the pin before In my 1 needed two putts to wrap up the hole but that was okay I had never paired a hole either which I had just done We all entered the ninth hole with my companion Susan and I tied She beat me last time by about so I wos pretty proud And I was only strokes be hind Gord who s so serious about the game he has spiked golf shoes Sues tee shot was about two feet behind mine so she went first I knew as soon as she hit the green on her second shot I wouldn t be able to keep up with her I landed in the sand trap another first I felt like I was on Wasaga Beach the way I was digging in the sand for a while I managed to finally get It out but put the basement windows of nearby homes In peril I hit it again and crossed the green again back to the sand Luckily I t need too many putts and actually got away eight strokes I finished up with a very respectable Bytheendofthegamelhatshowoldlfelt but it is better than my usually BZ by Mabel Barkman A Vanishing Breed It must be 10 years ago that my son
