Needs of disabled Study looks at transportation Halloo disabled population may be able to get around a little easier following a regional transportation study Councillors gave be green light recently to proceed with a study to examine transportation for the disabled The Region will pick up half of the bOl with the ministry of transportation and com munications paying the remainder The study will be examining all the ex Isting transportation services and programs for the disabled and frail elderly to get an understanding of what is now being offered A survey is expected to identify the transportation routes needed by the disabled and elderly The final part of the first phase is the assessment of the gaps and weaknesses in the regions transportation facilities for the disabled In the second phase of the study a number of alternative solutions will be presented for the councillors to act on The major problem the disabled face at present is the lack of inter regional travel available explained project coordinator Dave McQeaxy Oakville Burlington and Hal ton Kills all have transportation facilities for the disabled but they all work internally he explained McCleary said the lack of accessibility available to the regions elderly could limit them from attending university and colleges outside the regional boundaries Specialized hospitals are also difficult to reach when local transportation does not go beyond town borders said the study is an important step in identifying the needs of the com munity a disabled Rather than running out and buying ex tensive equipment we have to look at the demands and the service groups providing these services Before providing these services we have to make surethey are cost effective he said adding that it costs
