and he plans to be back imt year Local figure skater Kevin Parker placed fifth overall in Canadian Men Figure Skating Championships held in Regioa recently Performing against some of the top figure staling talent in Canada Porker lated points from figures short compulsory and freestyle events to earn his fifth place ranking According to Parker his performances the short compulsory and the freestyle earn tag him to 7 and 52 to scores re but his poor performance In the figures competition probably cost him a higher ranking Before competing in the figures the judges draw to determine which foot will be used to perform the maneuvers and wouldnt you know it they picked my worst fool explained Parker 1 think another factor against me in the figures was my starting position The judges usually re serve the best scores for the final few skat and happened to be one of the first Parker went on to explain that although he has been competing the men com petition for five years it was the first time he has ever done well in both the compulsory skate and the freestyle event In the freestyle and compulsory com petitions I was third said Parker but my figures dropped me back to fifth Although Parker had hoped to have placed higher in the competitions he said he was pleased with his overall performance and with further improvement In mind he is aiming for a place on the Canadian World Figure Skating team next season The 1984 year will be a new era in figure skating because a lot of Canada top talent will be retiring after the Olympics said Parker The national teams will be looking for new talent and so far this season I haven seen any newcomers to the spot that wo threaten my position on the team Parker remarked that be was appointed that he make the national team this season and his poorer showing In figures in S3 was probably the reason he 1983 Parker ranked rfUi in figures and dropped to ninth in 1983 For the next few days Parker said he was going to take it easy and maybe catch up on a skiing but it won long before he back training and perfecting programs for upcoming Ice carnivals and competitions 111 be sitting down with my parents and my coach Louis Stong season wins to nine and have edged closer to a play off position Despite a disheartening loss to Georgetown last Wednesday night Sabres roared back to life Saturday evening to dominate the Burlington Cougars for an victory The Sabres who flopped through the first half of the season have been mired in last place for almost all of the 198384 season But under the direction of assistant coach Steve Buchanan the local squad may have a real shot in the Central Junior B playoffs We still have a problem with mental attitude said Buchanan The boys have become used to losing and it s as habit forming as cigarettes They will play one poor period and It affect their whole game So we have to convince ourselves we can win I m sure concluded Buchanan If the boys come into the dressing room wilh guts and heads Intact hey can win five out of our six remaining games and well be in playoffs On Wednesday the Sabres were at home for the second of two games back to back with their Georgetown rivals The Sabres had managed to thwart the Gems In the first match but a third period rally in game two put Georgetown ahead with three markers The first period saw both teams equally determlnedtoblasttheiropponcntsoutafthe game and less than two minutes into the match the Gemscountered their first goal of the evening Moments later Hoy Spear took advantage of a powerplay situation and on a pass from Ken Kavanagh tied up the score at 312 The Gemini then waited a mere 11 seconds before grabbing the lead again and at 7 13 Georgetown battled through the Acton defense a third time Rick then rallied for Acton with assists from Mike Yarawlca and goalie Rick Landry Suffering only two penalties In the first period to the Gem a five Acton found themselves with a one man advantage at Brian Demone assisted by Denis Klrton rushed the Georgetown goal and the end of the first period It was a 33 draw However periods Acton manage to muster another marker and one Georgetown goal in the sec period and two markers In the third period clinched a Gems victory The Sabres were at home again on Saturday night as they took on Burlington Despite dropping a three goal lead tn the third period the home team still managed to Acton Travel drops to fourth After Sunday Industrial League play Family Cleaners remains in top spot and the formfcr second place team Acton Tra has fallen to fourth goals as Demone aided by McMeekin and pounded the puck into the net The Acton bench seemed to take for grant they were the winners of the match the home squad n tensity dropped off Burlington however renewed their efforts and at 5 and 12 they chalked up three goals to tie the game With a win looking rather doubtful for Acton at this point Steve Wagner a new Sabres up from the local midget squad saved the day with his first Junior goal Wagner was assisted on the play by Paul Corgill For the remainder or the game Acton managed to hold on to their one goo lead and with less than a minute remaining in the contest Kirton assisted by Spear poked the puck into an empty Burl nglon net The Sabres were in Streetsvllle last night Tuesday and results of that game will be in next week paper The soundly defeated their opponents Steve Fleet tallied a hattrick for Acton and Dannie Guest followed suit with a hat trick of his own Fleet was unassisted on all three of his goals and Guest was
