s number one attraction the Hide House late Wednesday afternoon It was the Opposition Leader first visit here and he gushed praise for the size and scope of the young retail business Peterson was brought up to date about not only the development and growth the Hide House but also other efforts to promote Acton as He also learned about the North Tourism Association Peterson called Highway a waste land noting that nothing is done to en courage people to leave the super highway and explore the areas around It He said he t wont to see Ihe look like an American highway with billboards pushing beer and other products as well as tourist attractions all over the place At the same time he said signs could be tasteful and still encourage people to leave the highway and make short side page A Mfefcicr Grade 13 will still exist even with new high school system Grade will not be totally ished under the new secondary school education system contrary to popular misconceptions Acton High School principal Betty Moore explained that certain credits will still be needed for entry Into university when the Ontario Second ary Intermediate and Senior OSIS program In implemented In Sept ember The provincial changes will affect those students entering grade or in September and will not have anything do with present high school students Mrs Moore ex plained The current grade 7 and students will graduate in IWs with the Ontario Secondary School Diploma Those in high school this year will graduate with the Secondary School Gradua Urn Diploma in grade and Honors Graduation Diploma In system dents require credits for rode and all additional grade for grade There are only nine compulsory courses four English two Maths and one each of Science Canadian History and Canadian Geography Eighteen elective credits are needed for grade 13 and six from grade 13 courses for grade 13 Under the new system only the one diploma will be available How ever there will be different stand for this diploma Subjects will be offered at three levels basic general and advanced Basic levels win be offered mainly at vocational schools A minimum of 30 credits will be needed for graduation under the changes Those going to university will also require or more credits but six of must be Ontario Academic Credits which are available at the advanced level only Of these are compel rive English two Maths two Science and one each of French Geography History Social Science senior division Physical and Health Education Arts and Bus ness or Technical Studies Students will be allowed or more elective credits Mrs Moore pointed out students will be encouraged to study more than the minimum requirements She also noted the rate with which students advance through high school will depend on their Individ Interests and abilities and will take between four and five years While students will generally stay at the same level of courses through out their high school career trans may be made In some cases special transition courses must be taken in order to make the switch Mrs Moore also explained that substitutes be made for the compulsory courses but only for exceptional students or those with about two year for her to become well Known and trusted in the community and just as she Is strengthening this trust she finds herself having to start over the south But she looks forward to It With
