Report from Queens Park Hydro Rates Hydro proposed l per cent rate increase for IKS will cost the average homeowner about next year according to Liberal Leader David Peterson who has accused the provincial government of acting without conscience in requiring workers to accept salary settlements below the inflation rate while allowing Hydro to propose a 9 1 per cent Increase after 7 per cent this year and per cent in 1983 Minister of Energy has indicated that Hydro rate increases will be higher than Inflation for at least the next two or three years Hydro of ficlals maintain that without the increase which is about percentage points above the predicted inflation rate for the corporation would be short some million which it needs for 1965 The Minister has Indicated that international lenders who have provided cash for the corporation dollar building campaigns would grow uneasy if Hydro were forced to borrow to meet operating expenses Police Boards MPP Hugh political hacks re moved from Ontario police commissions and replaced by strong independent people chosen by local municipalities While he acknowledges that there is nothing wrong with commissioners having past political connections he be lieves if they are actively engaged in politics like on the local Conservative executive they should resign or be remov because the position should be divorced from political interference Municipalities appoint three people to police commissions and the province appoints two but Mr maintains all five should be chosen by the by Julian Reed municipality I think the minister is infiltrating the police commission of this pro vince with political hacks he and I think it is very Funding For The Arts Opposition Members the Minister of Citizen ship and Culture about the Macaulay Report which in essence states that the Minister is starving the arts and fatten ing her own bureaucracy She was asked how she could justify the sorry state of fund of the arts in Ontario when she is at the same time inflating her own information budget which doubled last year to some million although it is providing absolutely no pro ductivity for artists and the arts The Macaulay Report main that the ministry could get the best value for its Invest ment in the arts by exhibiting restraint in its own operation It stated that the province con tributes only 9 per cent of the actual expenditures on the arts with the remainder coming from other levels of govern This is the lowest percentage for any province in Canada and is in fact only 50 per cent of the average level A survey sponsored by the committee discovered that S3 per cent of the province is pre pared to spend up to per per son per annum more in this connection through taxation Hugh cited the fact that Ontario spending on the arts has declined by over per cent since 197879 levels and quoted from the Report We believe that unless there are In creases in the provincial sub sidy to the arts in part to cor reel the erosion caused by information we could lose some of our most exciting talent and we will have squandered much of our sizeable Investment GeorgetownActon Wednesday Apr RE11 RECIPE OF THE
