As bury New Hamburg Georgetown Acton Wednesday June 6 9 In heavy schedule this week the Acton Junior A came away with one league win and two out of four games in the weekend Glen Williams tournament In a league game against New Hamburg on Friday the local team came out on top with a decisive victory New Hamburg opened their scoring drive right off the bat with four runners crossing home plate to put the A four points down For the next four innings the A were unable to find the ball so it until the sixth inning that Dave Wilson managed to round the bases on a double from Roy Spear and a wild pitch that sent him home However New Hamburg wasn I to be caught sitting still in the sixth inning either They connected with the ball and added two more runs to set the record at at the end of the sixth frame In the seventh inning the A really started tocometolife Mark and Dave took full advantage of errors by their op to make first base and a home run by Tim Baker gave the A three needed points The Hamburg team managed one more run the seventh inning The eighth inning saw no changes for either side and suddenly In the ninth a rally by the A had the game bagged and tied Kevin Mc Arthur reached first on an error Wilson got on base on an error and Roy Speai singled to load the bases Gord Scott singled to send McArthur home Rick Greenly sacrificed to send Wilson home end a powerful outstanding male and female athletes were for her superb performances on the crosscountry trails and the track and John for his prowess on the basketball court The Bill Spehar trophy was awarded to Bev Glenn and Emil Mlinarevic for their contribution to the athletic program The most improved athletes in the 198384 year were Susan Wilson and Dave Leslie and outstanding athletes were Maria Bril linger for her performance in cross ntry John Gardener for his performance in crosscountry Jane Sewell for her swimming abilities Jack Ninaber was named the outstanding male swimmer was named the outstanding female track and field athlete and George Gldman was named the year s most out standing male track and field athlete The most valuable player awards went to Rich Kilpatrick in boys badminton Coatcs in girls badminton Kevin Galloway in midget boys basketball John Kwaitkowski in Senior boys basketball and Pete Jones in Junior boys basketball Boo was the most valuable player on the junior girls basketball team and Andrea Arbic was MVP for the Senior Girls The most valuable volleyball players were Jay Corson for the junior boys Mark Walker for the senior boys Susan Craig for the junior girls and Teresa Dunn for the senior girls Ken Jesperson was MVP for Junior boys rugby and Scott Allonby was MVP for the senior rugby squad Gidmanand Uranick outstanding at OFSAA Both and George Gidman were only a fraction of a second out of winning their respective races at the Ontario track finals held last weekend in took second place in the senior girls BOO metre race defeated by Elm wood by IS of a second was runnerup to in the junior girls BOO metre Uranick time was 11 a personal best for her Both girls broke the OFSAA meet record of the Canadian Inter scholastic record of and the Canadian Open round of 2 It was an exceptionally good mance said trainer Bruce Andrews of Uranick s race also placed third in the senior girls metre race in a time of 57 32 seconds off her persona best for the race It was extremely windy and the metre is not Uranick event so Andrews was quite pleased with the placing he said In the senior boys metre was beat out by Agincourt Rob Klchuk by 36 100 of a second ran a new personal best with a time of l Teresa Dunn ranked in the top 20 In the senior girls shotput Her best throw was metres has qualified for the Canadian Junior Championships to be held in Eamonton July20and2l Gidman Is8 lOof a second off the qualifying standard and hopes to be competing as well The Junior Nationals Is a qualifying meet for the Canadian Junior Games in Nassau Bahamas In August Andrews believes and have a chance to qualify Gidman and Uranick will also be attend ing the Canadian Senior National Cham pionshlps in Winnipeg June to July I The meet is also the Olympic trials but that is not why the two runners are attending says Andrews They are attending to gain and to try to run personal best times he said O it primary objective is to get through the heats and gel to Ihe final then they have the opportunity run personal best time close to international calibre while a ranks him number in Ontario and Ihe top 10 in Canada for or boys said Andrews Both can Improve their personal best times before the summer racing season is complete he said The OFSAA championship meet was a Inst high school meet will be graduating this year and he hopes to attend York University for general studies If he is accepted he will be close enough to home to be able to continue training with Andrews keeping the agreement made when Andrews started training and to stay together for approximately 10 years and see how far they could get Bantams sink Simcoe for tourney The Acton Thomas Video Bantams are playing just tournaments this season but they re making the most of it The past weekend the local squad suited up for their first tourney of the season using a well rounded offense to claim the cham plonship at a tourney in Simcoe The local side pounded out 30 runs over three games to claim the title while giving up just six The Acton squad met Pen tang in their opening encounter Jumping on the pitching for three runs in the first inn on their way to a 1 rout Kevin Lobsinger pitched the win for the Thomas team going the first five innings before giving way to David Jeff White carried the big bat for the local side picking up three base hits including a triple and home run while Kevin Mark Pries hit safely three times as did David Haynes while Mike Baker reached safely on a pair of occasions White and each touched home three times with Baker and Lobsinger scoring twice Jason Rogers Mark Pries and Steve Wagner added the other run The Thomas squad had their hands full in their second match needing nine innings to dispose of a pesky Sarnia squad Jon Hammer carried much of the load in the match going all nine innings on the mound striking out 22 and allowing just Haton ladies doubled 105 After being rained out last Tuesday the Halton Hills Firestone Ladies were back in action on Wednesday and in a tough match they were doubled 105 by Good offense was supplied by Mardie Phillips who got hits three out of four times at bat and recorded two singles a double and two RBls Teresa Dunn also played well managing three for four plate to score two singles a double and a RBI Sue recorded one RBI as did Sally Janice Ingles pitched seven innings for the ladies three base hits In addition Hammer crossed the plate with the winning run The locals claimed a lead in the second inning as Pete Cargltl reached safely and scored on a David Haynes hit Haynes was called out trying to scoreon Brian Doherty single The score remained until the bottom of the sixth when Sarnia found the equalizer Acton regained the lead In the eighth as Jason Rogers picked up a base hit scoring on a Jeff White sacrifice fly Sarnia yet ready to give up tying the count in the bottom of the inning forcing yet another extra inning Jon Hammer led off the ninth with a single and came around to score as Steve Wagner belted one over the outfield to deep left field Wagner scored an insurance run as Mark Pries was credited with an RBI Acton came up against the host in the championship match and after falling behind In the rallied for an eventual 13 3 Kevin picked up his second win of day getting relief help from Hammer The Thomas team trailed 10 after one inning but regained control with a couple of second inning runs Leadings tin the fifth the Thomas squad relied on the precision bunting to put the game out of sight Five successive bunts and a Jeff White double led to a four run out burst Six more runs in the sixth produced the runaway score Hammer and touched home three times in the contest while Rogers and Pries came home twice each While added the other run The local squad go at it again this weekend when they travel to a double knock out event in Jordan The ThomaB team meet up with Beamsville In their
