General meeting July 5 Georgetown Acton Wednesday July 9 Acton Sabres sidelined by lack of manpower Writhing In its death throes the Acton Junior B hockey club has issued a plea for help Financially the Sabres need an infusion of financial support to start the not season Added to financial woes a critical shortage of manpower that if left unsolved will the doom of the club We are appealing to the conscieace of our supporters to come out and help get the team back on its feet said president of the Sabres Frank Allsop Without additional manpower fresh ideas and community sup port the team will be finished be added The Sabres who have had offers from two men to buy the team were left holding the bag after both deals fell through Godwin Carachl who bad been making moves to take over the organization since last November pulled out of the deal last month for unknown reasons and Dave the mast recent potential buyer had to with draw his offer after a partner included in the deal withdrew several years expressed reluctance to commit themselves to another years work running the team because they are tired and feel new people with new Ideas la the only thing that will save the Sabres from extinc tion Therefore said there will be a general meeting for all persons concerned on July at at the Acton Legion While the Sabres plight seems hopeless there light at the end of the tunnel because of Dave Innes who runs a mens hockey league in has offered some financial support for the team and given the support of the community he la willing to extend all the help he can for the Sabres I really want to see the Acton Sabres survive said Innes but I cant do it alone I really need some responsible hard working people to help me get the Sabres back In action for the coromg season The present executive also agreed to help out in any way they can but stressed that they need to see a good turnout for the up coming meeting SPO BA2 MOTORS LTD AUTO BODY SHOP IN QUtUtt Sabres saga a tale of woe teams almost ready to fold by Mark Holmes When Frank Allsop took over the position of president of the Acton Sabres his two big concerns were the continuation of Junior hockey in Acton and a major sponsor or owner for the team In the past eight months two goals were almost realized Then disaster struck Last November the Sabres executive received a letter of intent from Godwin Carachl a private businessman to pur chase the Sabres It was understood by the Sabres executive that was to be the major sponsor of the Sabres for the remainder of the season and at the end of that season he was take over the team and run it as he wish said Frank Allsop claimed last spring that he has no intention of becoming ihe team sponsor but he did want to see how things were run and he did intend to buy the team at of this hockey season During the season Carachl said he spread same of his money around paying players and investing in new equipment Carachl also said he paid for the Sabres Christmas maintains that I hold up his end of the financial bargain and as a result the Sabres are now broke We believed that Mr Carachl was going spend some money on the Sabres in the 198364 season so we the organization spent more money than usual on sticks tape and other related Items for the team said Allsop As a result the Sabres organization went through more money than they usually would leaving us without enough funds to start the 196485 season In speaking to both Carachl and the Sabres executive last everything seemed to be going well Tor the team and their potential owner been any real disputes over the contracts which were floating between lawyer and the Sabres lawyer awe Braida At the end of April when the Sabres had finished their season and the final contract was put forth by Carachl to the Sabres executive to be signed the worst problems arose Carachls contract stipulated that none of the present Sabres executive nor their children would be allowed to compete with the Sabres within a 10 mile radius The way the contract was worded also led the exe cutive to believe that they could have to do with hockeyperiod In the designated area with the contract both and the executive agreed to revise it through lawyer Alo Braida and return the papers to Carachi for signing before May 31 The contract was in hands before May 31 but when no action had been taken on the proceedings two weeks after the May 31 deadline the Sabres executive began to worry After attempts to contact Carchl failed the Sabres were provided with another alternative Dave Innes and Dave Switzer who were to be named he Sabres general manager and head coaching positions by Carachi came forward with an offer to buy the team Allsop called and Switzer a godsend meanwhile neither could possibly run the team When arose the next set of problems who was expected to financially help the team withdrew his offer leaving to take over the team by himself Innes noted that he couldnt run the team by Consequently the second offer to buy the Sabres fell through At this point man fllied problems grew Into mountains as an inventory of the teams equipment revealed several missing items tallying almost Allsopsaldthefrwere no clues to locate the missing Items Combined with the fact that It would take almost to get the team Btarted for the year both and the executive were left wondering If the Sabres were doomed At a meeting on June IS with most of the executive and Innes present the two parties came up with a plan of action Allsop decided to call a general meeting to inform the public of the Sabres situation and hopefully draw into the arena some new members for the Sabres executive Allsop said he was willing to help out with the team In a small way for the coming season but he as well as many of the other executive felt that they had been with organization long enough They were tired some had health problems and others had other commitments that would keep them from running the Sabres as it should be run with percent dedication who had only commented on his previous intentions said he was willing to make a financial contribution to the Sabres and the biggest problem now lay with the shortage of executive The bottom line now is that if the Sabres can get some new blood into the executive the first major obstacle will be cleared said he was surprised at the response from the players which Indicated most of them were willing to come back for another season with the Sabres also said he was willing to try and come up with sponsors to help pay the teams expenses and at the same time find a coach who could possibly help Sabres become a contending team However future of the Sabres ties in the bands of the public If there Isnt a positive response at the general meeting scheduled for July at 30 at the Acton Legion the Sabres may be finished The Sabres saga may or may not con tinue races are held every Saturday at the BMX track In Park
