Parent and Tot program a plus for area families By MARK HOLMES A unique new Acton program bringing both parents and children together is proving to be one of the best things that happened to some area families In a long lime Joyce Eton who had been suffering from a bout with cancer and depression thought she had nowhere to turn when she heard from an acquaintance about the Parent and Tot program Since she began attending Joyce said she has gotten over her depression and her son Ryan who was overactive and hard to manage has benefitted from the service as well rgin was a longtime former resi dent of Acton When she returned with her husband and she found she d lost touch with most of the people she knew Parent and Tot got her reacquainted with people in the area d and both she and Joyce have joined the mothers ittee which operates within the program Suzanne Ellis another member of the committee said there have been up to 100 mothers and their children involved in he program at any one time with to participants at each meeting We are not a babys service or a day care centre explained Ellis We promote a healthy relations between mothers and their children socializing for the parents and interaction between the children The program is similar to the Children Storefront program which Ellis attended three years ago in Toronto but changes have been made to adapt the service for the areas needs In January 1963 the program sponsored by the week meet the needs of the mothers who attended Ellis and a handful of others got together and formed the mothers committee Ellis working with the committee spear headed a campaign to obtain funds from government agencies and after weeks of work the Parent and Tot program ved financial help from the Ministry of Social Services Since the money became available the group meets three days a week has pur is an experienced social worker who has spent considerable time working th the Children a Aid society and Gates is working on her in Early Childhood on Parent and Tot runs Monday Wednesday and Friday from and while the program is geared for mothers with children under five years of age everyone Is welcome to drop in said Ellis So far the program t drawn many fathers to the meetings because of the hours erpla Ell but a few have stopped by Ell also noted that the Monday meetings are a more casual nature with crafts
