economy A resolution from the City of Windsor asking the pro vince not to up daycare fees to cover costs was simply filed by our council We realize they may con sider this outside their jurisdiction but is it The Windsor recommendation points out daycare would be beyond the average income earner if municipally owned cen tres have to break even or make a profit What would many of these single parents do if they could not be assured a child is looked after Surely they would have to go on welfare if they can no longer afford to work Is it not false economy to remove subsidies from day care in order to pay out more for welfare In addition many single mothers are struggling to be independent of handouts and feel a sense of accomplishment by manag ing to work and pay a por tion of the daycare costs It seems better for society as a whole to have citizens trying to get along without being on welfare rather than breeding a generation which takes welfare for granted and in fact a way of life The Ministry of Com munity and Social Services has decided to make all municipalities set their fees for daycare to the actual cost by January 1985 Perhaps your provincial should be asked to bring this up at Queens Park Just keeps rollin Now the accolades have dwindled for the Niagara Escarpment Commissions plan for that unique geological formation which crawls from to Tobermory one has to wonder what will happen to the commission Sur priseit wont be disband ed Like Old Man River it will keep on rolling along The Niagara Escarpment Commission has been a plum for retired and active municipal councillors since it was first established to protect the escarpment in The aim of the Act which brought it into being was to direct the efforts of several public agencies and interest groups towards maintaining the Escarp ment as a continuous natural environment and to ensure that any develop ment would be compatible with that environment The commission was to prepare a plan and administer an innovative system of development control It was first suggested that it would only take a few years to develop a plan and that would be all for the commission But it wasnt until that a proposed plan was released Mean while the commission was used as a place to reward politicians for past services to the Government So Queens Park has decided that the Commis sion will continue with its present 17 members nine of whom are selected by the Government and eight representing counties and regional municipalities within the Escarpment planning area The commissions role will be rescued as the regions and counties assume control of develop ment in the planning area but it will still be respons ible for Promoting the objec tives of the plan Assisting and advising in bringing plans into conform ity with the Escarpment plan 3 Administering the development permit system until delegated Reviewing and advis ing on proposed amend ments to the plan 5 Commenting on and monitoring development permits and lot creation 6 Commenting on and monitoring zoning applica tions and siteplan agree ments and decisions 7 Intervening on develop ment applications if plan objectives and policies are threatened So you see there is a rea son for keeping the club go ing comment Lost Youth by Sharon MicDonald Despite attempts by society and church to address the prob lems of Our Lost Youth there Is little change Many kids still find more comfort hanging around street comer than relying Acton Is no exception We used to think only kids from rough homes experienced such difficulty but this is no longer the case Many are from what society deems as a good home So we threw away this argument and began Incorporating thousands of dollars Into social employment and recreational activities After all if such kids had something to do if the right facilities were available they would not be so aimless Right Wrong Acton still has the problem It did ten years ago Catherine Marshall addresses a similar situation in her novel Christy David Granlland a young and concerned minister decided to solve the blockading problem In the Tennessee hills by destroying the local stills preaching out from the closet and get involved But his efforts bore no fruit as the stills resumed operation somewhere else According to Alice Henderson the communitys mission work he was simply digging worms fishing The real solution is to get nd of the wrongdoing In the case of some youth its their almlessness But whatever the root we must demonstrate a way more powerful than wrong doing This is the way of J s Christ Many of us h goers are talking worn out clinches futile You can gel results when your heart Is ablaze with the of God Maybe we should examine ourselves lo make sure we have caught that Tire As any fire consumes we wilt soon see the fire in our lives then compelling Then we lo the youth the answer that will not cover up the root but rather transform it into an effective wholesome life giving drive I lis a person IlisnameisJesus Submitted by Rev Johnson Evangel Tabernacle On The Leave Helens a full time mother by Helen Murray What do you say in a goodbye column that hasnt been written a thousand times before by a thousand other people It all sounds so trite so by the book Ive been missing from the streets of Acton in my newspaper role since midApril when I gave birth to my daughter I told you It was a girl early on the third working day of my maternity leave the day after completing some stories far Gord As many of you know Ive been missing from the streets of Ac I on al together since July when Sandy the dog and I moved to And except for visits I wont be back After months of speculation by my coworkers and friends I am now officially resigning from The Free Press a task I do with ears in my eyes and a lump In my throat I marked years at the Free P in July Thats a long time for someone who celebrates their birthday today Wed nesday As Acton grew so did I in more ways than Just maturity But as much as I loved the paper the people I worked with and those in the community I served in the last few years somethings been missing in my life At 49 a April 18 I discovered what was missing and nothing else seems matter anymore arrival Gord a new Job as editor of the Caledon Citizen in Bolton and our sub sequent move to Caledon have meant a new life for us I decided go all the way in that new life and for a while at least be a full lime mother My readers will probably bene fit by my leaving Since April 18 1 have thought of all kinds of column ideas all involving Alnsley I would have bored you silly Ive said my goodbyes to my friends and coworkers It was difficult and even depressing Goodbyes ore sad and even though I said them with dry eyes be assured they werent once I got home Oh 111 see you again but it wont be the same Ive made a lot of friends In Acton In the past decade That was indicative In the cards I got In the mail when Alnsley was born I treasure them all It hurts to leave them behind The people cards What also hurts is that there are some I won have a chance to get to know better- Lynda who was godsend in the weeks following Ainsleys arrival Edith Hi f man with whom I felt an equal Bruce who believes in what she says Joan Waldle whos been like a second mother Jean Stairs whom I greatly admire and Paul as a coworker we would have made a great team I feel badly Alnsley will not get to know any of you I wont express any thanks here Gord did that in June for both of us Bull will say Ill miss you all terribly I hope youll miss me too Helen Trim 20 off the cost of living by Sheldon Bucbalter If you had a choice and every thing else being equal which would you rather spend- Or put it another way Would you like to tnm per cent off your cost of living There is nothing hypothetical about cither of those questions is perfectly possible to cut your living costs by as much as per cent and at same time provide exactly the same necessities of life for yourself and your family Even If you only save a week that adds up to more than a year And its possible to do a lot bel ter than that All it takes is a bit of common sense a very little effort and the desire to save some money Its all done through sensible ding Admittedly Ihere are some fixed costs like mortgage payments or rent which you wont be able lo do much about But there are a great many other ways to beat the high cost of living by cutting your variable expenses and all without lowering your standard of living The main areas where you can ef fect considerable savings are food doming furniture appliances auto mobiles gasoline and even Ihe cost or money Itself So how do you start Since arc probably spending up to per cent of your income on food this is the logical place to begin Grocery chains regularly of fer many weekly specials which arc really loss leaders But Ihe loss is your gain and stock up when the pnee Is particularly good It could even be worth your while to buy a freezer to store meats or other perishables when they go on special What you save on food will quickly offset the freezers cost And as for the freezer itself you can save about 100 if you wail for he right sale in appliance or depart stores The same holds good with other major kitchen appliances You will seldom pay the full suggested retail price if time your pur chases to sales When It comes to small appliances like toasters or juicers the best place to shop is at one of the cut rate department stores You may have to serve yourself but you will save a good per cent over normal retail prices If a new car is on your agenda can save or more Just by buying at the end of ihe model year ralhcr than at the beginning You re still gelling a brand new car with full warranty for a lot less money Save money when you fill up loo by locating those gas stations that consistently sell cent or two a litre less When youre borrowing from the bank it is to gel a lower interest rale just by pulling up some security Try It The saving is worth ft Remember every dollar you save is like money in the bank And if helping your
