Tyler as the building sits forlornly on Willow St halfdone and a bit of an eyesore in its pre sent state The reason for the delay in restoring the centuryold Acton landmark is the wait for from the Heritage Foundation Its legal red tape The Town has handed over the deed I but the committees lawyer must find out if the Heritage Foundations liens on the property are in order Meanwhile ideal weather fo- fixing Actons grand old lady up in new garb is rapidly disappearing down calendar tube As Ted 1 Tyler commented Everything will likely fall into place when we have our first freezeup We hope so Too bad it has taken so long to get the town hall in shape The committee in charge of the restoration had hoped it would be in good enough condition to hold a New Years celebra tion there last New Years Eve The goal now is this coming New Years when Tyler says he is going to ring that bell in celebra tion not only we suspect of a job which has caused numerous headaches but also a personal triumph of sorts It will be a visual improvement when the old lady of Willow Street is finished and looks like she used to back in the days when grandma wore a hoop skirt and grandpa wore a bowler Relief for developers restrictions on the growth of Acton which have emanated from the Region and the Province may final ly be removed and this com munity can achieve more selfsufficiency The Region this week ac cepted a bid from a Fenelon Falls company to drill four test holes and construct municipal wells along the Fourth Line east of Acton The Region hopes one of the test sites will be suitable for a new municipal well to ser vice Acton and provide the reserve demanded by the Province before the urban area can expand It should remove another than in developing new housing Some developers have been frustrated for years by the apparent lack of sym pathy or empathy by region and municipal civil ser vants for the communitys growth Developers have been sty by restrictions real or imaginary dreamed up to stop development We need to be constantly reminded that every time new development is set back the price of the pro duct increases Is it any wonder new houses are well beyond the pocketbook of many local people The municipality and the Region have respon sibilities to see that developers adhere to the restrictions on growth but there is ample evidence to suggest some officials have gone beyond the call of duty to frustrate building When one sees the amount of arable farmland being swallowed up in the Brampton area by developers and the lack of a large stream to carry ef fluent one has to suspect the restrictions placed on Acton are purely political Although we are part of the Twon of Halton Hills Acton must still be a self- contained community Restrictions have curtailed economic that could benefit both present and future residents of this community Hopefully the steps being taken now will eliminate some of the clap- trap and let the community grow Reasonably of course Severe penalty Those who deface election signs in town and rural areas should be aware that under The Canada Elec tions Act any one found guil ty of removing or defacing candidates signs faces a fine of up to and a possible five years in prison Last week someone either maliciously or as a prank disfigured the liberal candidates sign by drawing on a moustache The someone also added let ters to the Progressive Con servative candidates signs show their animosity wasnt merely annoyance at the Liberals In any case the culprits could be in a mess of trouble if they are nabbed Defac ing signs for elections is no laughing matter when theres a whopping fine and up to five years in jail as the reward It will take a lot of chortl ing to pay for that kind of nonsense In Canada we pride our selves on the fairness of our electoral process but if everyone vented their spleen on candidates by defacing or removing signs wed be in a sorry mess in deed J I fe5- 5S Our readers write Closing of plant is a shock with financial social impact Following is a Ittierfrom Ed Wood Chairman of the Acton Business Improement Area fBIA sent lo Metroland chairman John Baxter and filed with The Free Press for publica- Dear Mr Baxter The Mercury of Wednesday August 8 ried a story prominently dis played that the Acton plant of your company would be closing its doors and moving employees to plants in and Brampton Since there was no indication lA the Acton Free Press of the move I was sur prised rival newspaper would scoop the local paper on one of its own stories However employees of the plant assure me the Mer cury account is not fabricated Needless to say the move is a great shock to Acton where printing facilities have existed for over years It is also an economic blow to this communi ty which has not had good news in the last few years I wa3 shocked when The Free Press editorial staff was moved to Georgetown I should then have concluded that something else was coming but felt your company had the best interests of the communities In which they publish papers at heart Ob viously Acton is not one of them I suppose I should not be shock ed about corporate decisions It seems they have become an embarrassment we must live with sometimes However this one hits our community at a time when we could use some cheerful news and reflects on the credib ility of your companys social conscience It may not seem like a big thing in a community the size of when an employer locks its doors and moves elsewhere In communities the size of Acton it has implications for beyond even the social and economic impact I was glad to sec your company has offered the full time employees Jobs in Mississauga and Brampton recognizing responsibilities in that direction but the fact part time employees will likely lose their Jobs is an other blow to our economy and to them Surely the bodies of H P Moore one of the first printer and publishers in Acton and the late G A Dills must be turning over in their graves that one large corporation should be able to undo the work it took over a century for them to build And in one decision about a press Yours truly Ed Wood Chairman Acton Asks Metroland to reconsider Following is a tetter to the president of Metroland Printing and Publishing from the president of the Acton Chamber of Commerce filed with The Free Press for publication Dear Mr Baxter 1 am writing this letter on behalf of the Acton community to express disappointment and con cern regarding your decision to close the Acton plant The Acton Free Press has been a cornerstone institution of our community for 110 years The semiamalgamation of the Free Press and Independent has resulted in Jobs being transferred from Acton to Georgetown Despite the very best efforts of the editorial staff the inevitable decline In news coverage associated with ab senteepublishing Is already becoming apparent The decision to close the printing plant is an even greater blow to the com munity in terms of the jobs that have been lost While our understanding is that fulltime employees will be transferred parttime employees will likely join the ranks of the unemployed in our community Our business community has long been providing advertising support for the Free Press in part to help fulfill the Important community service role the paper fulfills It has become very hard believe that Metroland Printing and Publishing shares this concern for the Acton community On behalf of the entire com munity I urge you to reconsider your decision lo close the plant Yours sincerely Steve President Acton Chamber of Commerce Water in radiator costs 5 Dear Sir Last night Friday my truck was overheating on the so pulled into the Texaco Station on 25 and
