Halton councils to induce support of regional government was a pledge that industrial development in the new region would become a function of the regional municipality In those halcyon days the Province promised rather than have the various local municipalities fighting for industrial assessment through their own industrial development commissions it would be better if one industrial development agency was established so that all municipalities in the new region could benefit from industrial growth in any area of the region This will be tied into the development of a com plan for the en tire region so that areas which are residential or agricultural in nature can remain that way and still reap the benefits of the in growth on those lands which are most suited to this type of develop ment a report concurred Well throw that carrot down the smk Consider this quote by Burlington mayor Bird at regional conn cil this week The Regional business develop ment department is not a joy for Burlingtons business development department because is running interference They ruffle feathers Bird argued that the premise of sharing new in assessment among area municipalities is no longer a valid argument and will likely become a deterrent to maintaining the current system His citys staff has outlined an alternative giving full authority for business development to the area municipalities and leaving the Region with basic coordination duties So much for the shining regional concept and the sharing of revenue from new industry Burlington wants to handle its own sales and promotion and keep its revenue while the Region does the research and is supportive of all ef forts Well why not make all the rest of the regional responsibilities local too Lets turn back to the old county system if those with the biggest sticks can turn everything to their liking The decision by general committee of Halton Hills council to increase the level of snow clearing along town sidewalks this winter has to be commended Snowfalls like last winters were a hardship for some people especially the handicapped and the elderly who found that getting around the community hazardous as well as uncomfortable As Councillor John McDonald says the new level of snow cleanng will be money well spent It is impossible to estimate how much snow will fall in any given season or how much snow clearing will be necessary As a result it is difficult for coun cil to budget an amount which will cover that par seasons snowfall For instance the winter of two years ago was relative ly free of the white stuff after initial snowfalls in December and early January So much of the snow budget was untouch ed The next year the weather changed from a relatively open winter to a snowy one and town crews had to put in many extra hours keeping roads clear for traffic let alone side walks The budget was ex ceeded It created hard ships for the elderly They had to navigate icy side walks and walk along roads piled high with snow Pedestrians of all ages found it hazardous on when they shared busy roads with vehicle traffic The decision to clear the sidewalks along the mam streets will alleviate some of that distress and is a step the direction One day it may be possi ble to pay for having all the sidewalks in town cleared after a heavy snowfall on a priority basis Until then those residents who clear the stretch of sidewalk along the front of their pro will be doing not only themselves but everyone a favor Back issues years ago Nov No Immediate help is available Tor the removal and treatment 10 appeared in court Monday and was released on bail Out of the mouths of babes 20 Folio art a series of on Remembrance Day by Grade students at L lite c School Unfortunately tied just after dead last the essays are not perfect teacher Paul com but they do reflect the feel tins of ten I think wars start by crazy people or countries Since I t around in World War one or two 1 know Peoples emotions where but I can bet they were not very happy feelings If 1 had been around in cither war I would have felt full of anger and I would have detested the other countries People who think war is just a bunch of foolish full grown kids playing with plastic bombs Its not true There really are wars and there really are nuclear bombs and last of all there really are soldiers who sacrifice their lives for ours and our country Kelly Ambrose I think wars start by silly things people say and things people do I think wars also start when there Is two sides Wars should be stopped because people have been killed because of one little silly thing somebody said My feelings about a war is sad and sorrowful 1 understand what a war is now Lisa Beaton I think wars start by people get ting to do something and other do not The people that do not get to not something get mad and do not like It So they started to yell and then they start a fist fight Then one kills each other Then they kill more and more people That how people start a war Jennifer I think wars start when crazy peo ple start a f ghl Then everybody joins In More and more people join In Thais how we have world wars People who are grouped on one side arc joyful and merry On the other side they feel mad and upset by the government Thats how we start a war Tracy 1 think wars start by a little between two people then it gradually grows large number of people Arguing also starts a war One side laughs at the other side and iheothersidcgetsmadatthem So a big bad war starts Everyone gels mad and angry People get hurt very very badly Scott I think wars start by a simple argument and a comment feel that there should be such thing as a war A little silly argument can do such a bad thing Just like today in the class when the girls were allowed to chew gum and they did not have to do work The boys had do work because four boys did not bring it in That almost caused a war The girls laughed and the boys got more frustrated In a war of people get hurt and might even die Wars ore a awful thing I do not ever want to be in a war Chris no last name submitted I thing wars start by the govern ment saying things that are not true Afier World War 1 people knew the feeling of war is very sad As Ihe war goes on and on These days the USA has a new weapon called nucleor bomb I feci scared of that weapon Robin Clark I think wars start when people start fighting about some silly word that one person said When someone starts a war they really t think ing I think wars should be sloped by someone who knows what they are doing Ihey do not know what they are doing they might get killed In lhat war I think If a person starts a war they should gel killed I now know how a war starts no last name submitted I think wars start when one group people has to do something and another group of people do not The group of people that are doing Ihe thing get angry the other group gets what they want and they start to yell and call each names Thcpeoplelhataredoingthe job get angry inside and upset They also get mad and they want lo hurt each It gets in a really big mess and every body gets hurt Then they get so mad because people ore killing fondles Then they get as mad as anything and That is how I think war is Started Sargent I think wars start by people fighting When people things that other people feel frustrated about Wars make some people nut like people But maybe wars make some people feel jolly What happened In the class today was the boys had to do writing about why they like girls That made the boys frustrated While the girls were sit ting smiling at each other That is what I think usually causes wars When people get mad at each Lisa Anderson Clergy comment The lightswitch Let There Be Light Genesis 1 Owning your own house can be a wonderful thing For many years my family and I have lived in The Manse The Manse is Presbyterian language for the house that is usually provided for the Minister as part of his income for the service he provides to a congregation When came to Acton we were given the opportunity to pur chase our own house As I said that can be a wonderful thing However it means that now you have to look after oil the repairs and that may not be so wonderful I had one of those tricky delinquent light switches that seem to work only in day light When you really don t care whether it works or not But at night time when it decides to be temperamenlal you realize with no small wonder why the author of Genesis I put light on top of Gods creation list Anyone with a switch like I had or anyone who has spent a restless night awaiting the day knows what it means to have the light finally come Ever since the discovery of fire it seems that God has turned over the business of switching on the lights to his creatures made in his image Every time I flip a light switch a good one in the house have a quiet sense of power over the miracle of It all There are some people I have known who seem lo be able to do the same trick in the lives of others With the right word the right grin or even the right they have learned the magic of dispelling darkness and helping the light to come The good news tells us wo are meant to be bearers or light The bad news is that the darkness in life is ample We can curse the darkness asthcoldsayinggoes or we can help switch on
