More Than Rice Now For Adopted Dewi Mr and Mrs i Duncan Drive Georgetown have adopted five year old of Indonesia By contributing a month through Foster Parents Plan Canada Mr and Mrs give the child and the family material and fi aid aim- at strengthening the family unit by helping each member The child is symbolic of aid giv en to the entire family Before Mr and Mrs MQlesse became foster parents the childs family struggled to survive on an income of per month This is earned by father as an elementary school teacher This la cash and a rice allow ance of The mother is unable to And a Job bo consequently some of the family live with relatives because of lack of funds to sup port them The familys rent Is per month and the rest of the income Is spent on rice which la all they eat and that Is often not enough They live In a bamboo shack lSxlS with earth flooring no windows or ceiling and water has to be fetched from a Mr and Mrs con tribution of a month the family grant distribution of goods such as vitamins blankets towels soap and other useful Items medical and dental care the sustained guidance and coun seling of social workers and the benefit of special programs A strong emphasis Is placed on education All Foster Chil dren and their brothers and sisters if possible must attend school Vocational training courses given or supported by PLAN In some countries are available to foster children their brothers and sisters and in some areas their parents The aim Is to give each member of the family the tools to help themselves become in dependent and selfsupporting Special programs adapted to the needs of each country also meet these aims In Indonesia for example PLAN has instituted a savings program for PLAN families in cooperation with local bank Each families Foster Parents Plan Kennedy School Choirs Successful in Festival Two choirs from George towns George Kennedy Public School now know what its like to sing in competition and to be successful The Junior schools primary and junior choirs entered in the North Halton Music Festival held in the Martin Street Senior School in Milton Wednesday and each placed second in their respective classes It was the first competition for both groups The George Kennedy primary choir won the Duke Devon shire award for grades one and two in larger schools The Jun ior choir won the Music Festiv alMilton Legion award for grades three and four In larger schools Kenneth Harrison and Mrs made the pre sentations It Is only the second time in about years that a George town school has port In the naif century old festival Chapel Street Public School was entered last year Georgetowns domination of the festival at one time almost spelled the end of the compet ition it was to save it that the Georgetown schools passed it op for years When the County Board of Education cane Into being last year they left the matter of entry up to each ind ividual school WE WON In all about 1500 North ton public school children sang their hearts out in the festival which last year was renamed the North Halton Association for the Performing and Creative Arts Music Festival Youngsters from Grades sang for adjudicator Miss Mar ion Park of Lincoln County Board of Education music de partment When she announced the win ner of each of the compet itions cries of We won rang through the hall followed by fur ious hand clapping Were going to get a pizza exclaimed one happy youngster giving away a bit of procomp etition teacher encouragement TALENT Miss Park said at the festiv als conclusion she was amazed at the musical talent displayed by the youngsters and also at the organization getting them In and out of the hall without a hitch event Is sponsored by se veral service clubs and womens groups in North and tro phies were donated by them as well All the competitors take mu sic as part of their regular school program said Tom Gib son principal of Martin Street School and president of veers festival They practice the festival numbers in class and choir members are selected out these groups and put in extra time after school he soli SPECIAL SHOW Thursday all winners as well several bands gymnastic teams and vocal soloists perfor med at a special show In tho au ditorium of Milton District High School MUSIC County Board Ed ucation is holding Music this year featuring a massed choir of students from Grades to and a piece student bond This show will be held May IS in Perdue High School In Oak- vllic May in Milton District High School and May In Robinson High School Bur lington Some of the
